Bob Hearts Abishola (2019)
Surprising, lovely, hilarious
It took me about half the first season to truly warm to this show. But then the whole setup just...It locked into place. It had real human experiences without being too serious about itself. Many of us watch TV to laugh, to escape. If we see something we understand, or learn something about another culture by accident, my gosh, what a delightful side effect.
This show never fails with the laughs. The characters are brilliant and beautiful. The familial intersections - could not ask for better. In real life, it's too serious. I need something to remind me of the absurd. This show fits the bill.
And Uncle Tunde is the best!
The Thing About Pam (2022)
Awesome Brilliant Wonderful
Of course, like anything "based on true events", there is going to be a little jazzing it up for dramatic storytelling purposes. Life is not a movie or TV and it doesn't translate as such.
However, I have heard the story of Pam Hupp so many times (I love my true crime), that I didn't honestly think I would watch this past the first 15 minutes. I knew the story, I knew how crazy it was, I knew how insane Pam was - she was a sociopathic mega-Karen who had a bit of a murder spree. Fascinating yes, but after the first four true crime YouTubers covered her, how could the show possible interest me?
With a macabre-Dr. Suess-like narration and Pam's over the top recollection of events ("oh she has a bag" *pop* there's the bag; or the intruder's ninja powers), it really honestly suited the absurdity of the Pam Hupp story. To top it off, while they took the usual storytelling liberties, they kept surprising to the true story, so much so that you can compare it to real footage (which they do at the end). And Renee Zellweger is BRILLIANT. Honestly, there were times I thought they used real footage of Pam Hupp.
And what was great about the storytelling was that even though they had things a little over the top at the time for the comedic effect, they didn't do it to the expense of the victims. I felt the tragedy of the loss of Betsy, of Russ's cries. I was angry at the cops and DA and their claims. I felt keenly the tragedy that Russ and Betsy's daughters still have not talked to this day. And the extraordinary tragedy of that Louis Gumpenberger's family will never see justice.
Overall, brilliant series.
Copshop (2021)
Alexis Louder Definitely Next Action Star
The movie itself was definitely entertaining and fun and I would definitely be intrigued if a sequel should ever come about, but I think the real headline of this movie is Alexis Louder. I would love to see more from her. Everything from her childlike excitement for her handgun to her kick butt ways to her pink nail polish, I loved her. I'm hoping this is only the beginning of a long and fun action career for this actor!
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Not a waste of time but not worth the effort
Unlike some bad movies, I didn't feel like I wasted my time watching it. But I definitely wouldn't recommend it - don't make an effort to watch it. Cosmic Sin is an appropriate title but definitely not in the way they meant it.
The Seventh Day (2021)
A rough edit to what could be a great movie
I rated this so well because I think it might have been better if it had a chance to flesh itself out (also, if it didn't feel like Guy Pierce disappeared every few minutes). I felt like the movie was still in rough draft format. Or maybe large chunks were left on the cutting room floor. But the concept was awesome! I felt like it took an old trope and gave it new little twists that kept me surprisingly engaged.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Not as good as it looked
It followed a character you hated. I kept shouting for her to get what was coming to her only to be disappointed time and time again.
Diane Weiss was so very great (and way under-used) in this film and Peter Dinklage was brilliant as usual (but disappointing in that he didn't take down the disgusting main character, but that's not his fault - a behind-the-scenes decision I imagine).
While Diane Weiss and Peter Dinklage are awesome, they can only do so much. The only reason I rated this as high as I did is the very end. But really, your redeeming factor should not be the last minute (literally, the last minute) of the movie.
The Prom (2020)
The Musical We Need For Right Now
I love musicals, from My Fair Lady to The Greatest Showman, I really do watch a broad range and a great many. The Prom was an absolute delight. (The flow of story to song and back again kind of reminds me of My Fair Lady actually.) The Prom made me laugh, made me cry, made me clap, made me smile. And the cast just made it perfect.
