Louis Cottrell was born Louis Albert Cottrell, Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 7, 1911.
Louis Cottrell (Jr) was a jazz clarinetist known for using the "Albert System", which is a special fingering used to provide "slurring" of notes. He was the son of Louis Cottrell (Sr), who was a jazz clarinetist and drummer from New Orleans. He is also the grandfather of Louis Cottrell, a jazz drummer from New Orleans. Because father and son were both musicians in the same town, and sometimes the same bands, Sr was often referred to as "Old Man" Cottrell and Jr was called "Little Man" Cottrell. Later in life, Cottrell (Jr) was named the President of the local music union, and was then called "Prez" Cottrell. When his grandson, also named Louis Cottrell, began playing with Cottrell (Jr), he was given the nickname "Lil Louie" Cottrell.
