Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.
Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg — who previously adapted Cowboy Bebop for Netflix and High Fidelity for Hulu — are attached to pen the script and exec produce via their Midnight Radio banner’s André Nemec and Jeff Pinkner. Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter will exec produce alongside the company’s Leigh London Redman. Berlanti Productions’ Jonathan Gabay and Midnight Radio’s...

After revealing behind the scenes details about how he helped bring an all-star group of musicians together to make the Grammy-winning smash hit charity single “We Are the World” in the Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” Lionel Richie recently spoke to IndieWire about which of the participants he knows have watched the movie, and are still reeling from the down-to-the-wire recording session.

Monday’s episode of The Voice — and the end of Season 25’s Playoffs — served up a painful reminder that sometimes it’s not enough to be “cute as a button.” Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire had to shrink their teams of five contestants apiece to just three each. Along the way, some promising singers were cut (although, to be honest, none that I was as sorry to see go as Anya True and Mafe last week). Which six acts were the last put through to the Lives? “Knuckles,” the live-action/animated spinoff series currently streaming on Paramount+ and featuring the titular red Echidna warrior (voiced by Idris Elba), kicks things off with an amusing ’90s throwback opening title sequence. We encounter markered animations (done by Picturemill) of the main characters, as they jump across the labels of mixed CDs in a binder and roll by the credits, to the tune of “The Warrior” by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth.
It’s all part of Knuckles getting introduced to the “earth music” of his new protégé, dim-witted deputy sheriff Wade Whipples (Adam Pally), while trying to teach him the ways of Echidna-style fighting.
This marks the first series for Knuckles, based on Sega’s popular Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise, which takes place between the events of the films “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which introduced Elba. It was created by John Whittington (“Sonic the Hedgehog 2...

“I am 18 and entirely unremarkable,” Jenna Ortega says at the beginning of Miller’s Girl, the feature debut of writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett. But not for long. In the psychological thriller co-starring Martin Freeman, a student-teacher relationship turns into a dangerous liaison when a lonely teen’s writing assignment sparks intimacy with a much older man.
“No one is a perfect villain or a perfect victim. They don’t exist,” Bartlett told Forbes about the film’s controversial subject matter. “These characters are quite nebulous and gray, which I think is closer to real-life people.”

Bridgerton‘s third season may center around Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), two characters fans have come to know over the years, but there’s a new member of the Ton who is raising questions, and that’s Daniel Francis‘s Lord Marcus Anderson. The mystery man plays a somewhat major role; according to his character description, Lord Marcus Anderson is a charismatic presence who lights up any room he enters, attracting the notice of certain matriarchs in the Ton and the ire of others. Much of the ire appears to come from none other than Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), who is seen giving the man some major side-eye in one of the show’s recently-released moving character portraits. One character who isn’t giving the new arrival any side-eye? Bridgerton matriarch Violet (Ruth Gemmell), who seems to have an eye for the dashing man. But...

Jerry Seinfeld thinks that both film and TV are caput.
The “Seinfeld” co-creator, who also makes his directorial debut with Netflix’s “Unfrosted,” said during The New Yorker Radio Hour that the “extreme left” is to blame for the end of the golden era of comedy, particularly with sitcoms.
“People always need comedy,” Seinfeld said. “It used to be that you would go home at the end of the day…People would go, ‘Oh, ‘Cheers’ is on. ‘M*A*S*H’ is on. Oh, ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ is on. ‘All in the Family’ is on.’ Where is it? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap and people worrying so much about offending other people.”
Seinfeld pointed to the new process by “committee” to create comedy, particularly with writing jokes.

Video-game adaptations are going next level. Amazon says “Fallout” is off to the second-best start for any series on Prime Video ever.
More than 65 million people watched “Fallout” in its first 16 days on the streaming service, per a Prime Video rep. Amazon says that’s second only to the 16-day debut window for “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” back in 2022. “Fallout” is proving to be far from a (nuclear) bomb for Amazon’s Prime Video.
According to the streamer, the series pulled in 65 million viewers in its first 16 days of availability, with the first season dropping in its entirety on April 10. That makes it the second most-watched title ever on the platform and the most-watched title since the debut on “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” back in 2022.

Jason Kelce is headed to the broadcasting booth. The recently retired football star is joining ESPN’s pre-game show “Monday Night Countdown,” Variety confirms.
ESPN emerged as the favorite among multiple networks vying for Kelce’s on-air commentary, a group of suitors that included NBC and CBS’s Sunday night programming. Kelce joins a “Monday Night Countdown” broadcasting team that last season included host Scott Van Pelt and analysts Marcus Spears, Ryan Clark and Robert Griffin III.
Kelce, who announced his retirement in March after 13 years playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, has drawn a high degree of interest across the entertainment industry over recent months.

It’s probably the second most-asked question in late-night circles after “Is Lorne Michaels retiring?”: Will Jon Stewart stay on at The Daily Show past November?
The comedian, who famously led the show from 1999 to his 2015 retirement, returned as the program’s Monday-night host back in February. At the time, the gig was billed as one that would only last “through the election,” but with his time back at the desk leading to a ratings resurgence for the show, speculation has grown that he might stick around longer.
Based on what Stewart said during a recent taping, it seems he might enjoy being there as much as Comedy Central is enjoying having him.
Asked by an audience member how happy he was to be back, Stewart reflected on how the weekly hosting stint has gone for him so far — but not before mocking the light workload his current schedule allows him.

The Bold and the Beautiful’s Sheila Carter has defied death once again and no one is more surprised than her portrayer, Kimberlin Brown, who thought her alter ego’s demise in February was the real deal. “Brad [Bell, executive producer/head writer] called me up to his office and he just told me, ‘We’re going to be killing off your character,’” she recalls. “It kind of sucked the air out of the room for me. But I knew the day was coming. I knew that it couldn’t last forever. I was just really thankful that it lasted as long as it did.” So Brown was understandably thrilled to receive a call a mere few weeks after Sheila’s death played out on screen, inviting her back to the soap. “I truly believe that [with] the fan outcry when they killed me off and the stories [in the press] that went viral,...

AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines.

In a sign of his rising prominence within NBCUniversal, Telemundo has tapped SNL featured player Marcello Hernández to help woo advertisers to the Spanish-language network at an upfront event next month in New York City.
Telemundo will, as usual, take part in the larger upfront presentation for its corporate parent NBCUniversal on May 13th. But it will also host its own “Telemundo Celebration” later that evening, enlisting Hernández to demonstrate the opportunity it offers advertisers to reach a bilingual U.S. Latino audience.
Mónica Gil, the chief administrative and marketing officer for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, touted Hernández’s involvement with the network in a new interview with Adweek.
“Someone like Marcello represents both [the English and Spanish] worlds,” she said. “And my message to advertisers in many ways is that when you think of Hispanic audiences, we’re not either, or. We’re and.”

Former Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Monica Garcia just announced she had a miscarriage. In an Instagram post on Sunday, she shared the devastating news with her 438,000 followers. “One thing I promised myself when opening my life up to all of you was that I was going to do it completely unapologetically and authentically raw as possible. I would show you my life in all aspects because that is what I agreed to do,” the TV personality wrote. “Unfortunately I need to share a very heartbreaking aspect.” The post features two photos in black-and-white, one with herself on an exam table in a hospital gown as she looks at a screen containing what appears to be an ultrasound. “‘There is no heartbeat’ I don’t have many words and I’m still processing all of this myself,” she shared. “As quickly as this happened, that’s how quickly things have changed.

In recent years, doctors and scientists have studied the gut with renewed interest. Research has revealed that the digestive system is more than just a processing center for the food we eat, and that it has a much bigger effect on our overall health than previously thought. Issues as varied as stubborn weight gain and Parkinson’s disease can be linked to the gut, which means that understanding our digestive system — and, by extension, how it thrives or suffers based on what we eat — is crucial. In a new documentary, Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut, German doctor Giulia Enders partners with colleagues to explain how the gut works — and how to make it work for you.

Here we go again. Apparently not content with his ongoing feud with Jimmy Kimmel, Donald Trump added two more Late Nighters to his enemies list this weekend.
Trump took to Truth Social with his take on the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, which featured an interview with third-party presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. While the post was mostly aimed at Rfk Jr., Trump made sure to get a couple barbs in at Maher first.
“I actually watched, first time in a long time, ratings challenged Bill Maher’s really boring interview with Rfk Jr. last night,” Trump wrote in a Sunday morning post.
Despite Trump’s claims to the contrary, in fact Maher’s program recently doubled its audience when CNN began rebroadcasting the Friday night HBO show Saturday nights in prime time.

Peacock is peacocking ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics: the NBCUniversal streaming service is raising its monthly rates by $2 on both its Premium and Premium Plus plans. The new rates go into effect for new customers on July 18 — the Paris Olympics start on the 26th.
Existing customers will get the Olympics at their current rate: the price hike for them will hold until August 17 at the earliest (dependent on billing date). The Olympics close on August 11.
Peacock Premium will now cost $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Peacock Premium Plus, the ad-free tier, will run $13.99 per month or $139.99 per year. Premium Plus members can also download content and get live, local NBC channels.
It could use the money: Peacock lost $639 million in the first quarter of 2024. The company has not announced a profitability timeline.
Peacock has “nearly 100,000 programming hours,” the company says. Of those, 8,000 are live sports — not counting the 5,000 coming from the Olympics this summer.
