- TriviaUsed the same sound stage in Hawaii as Hawaii Five-O (1968).
- GoofsAfter Magnum "steals" the Ferrari, he slides the Targa roof back then takes off. With no cutaway, the roof is nowhere to bee seen, this kind of roof has to be lifted off then put vertically behind the seats. There had to be 1 or 2 people to quickly take it away.
- Quotes
Jonathan Quayle Higgins III: [to Magnum, as he is fixing Higgins a drink] Don't ruin my whiskey with ice. I'm not a bloody American!
- Crazy creditsFamed character actor Branscombe Richmond is credited in this episode as "Moki" yet Moki never appears on screen. He is credited in both part one and part two. He later shows up in three more episodes, but strangely this appearance must have ended up on the cutting room floor.
- Alternate versionsThis pilot was later edited into two parts for syndication. The episode was renamed "Don't Eat The Snow in Hawaii", and deletes the show's opening and closing themes and replaces it with the familar 1981-88 opening credit music.
- ConnectionsReferenced in Stranger Things: Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy? (2019)

Strong pilot episode; a perfect blend of action, drama and comedy
"Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii" manages to squeeze a lot into its 90 minutes, introducing all the main characters of the series and revolving around a relatively strong plot.
Tom Selleck hits the ground running with his portrayal of retired naval lieutenant turned private eye, Thomas Magnum. He's simply brilliant in this part.
"Magnum P.I." is a wonderful cocktail of action, drama and comedy. It's pretty gritty in places but there's a reassuring sense of safety with Magnum on the case, his internal stream of consciousness keeping the viewer abreast of his thoughts and feelings. John Hillerman is the perfect comic foil as Higgins.
This episode contains an early Judge Reinhold appearance; short but memorable.
Wonderful escapism. All that's missing is the "Magnum P.I." theme tune but this will follow later in the season.
8 out of 10.
