In spite of their title, this is not really a remake of Robert Siodmak's 1937 version (aka "Le Chemin De Rio");both movies are based of Jean Masson's article/book , deal with white slave trade and feature two journalist who investigates .There the comparison ends .
The 1937 screenplay took us on a cruiser en route to Rio whereas the 1958 George Lacombe film does not leave Paris and its outskirts ;only one journalist ,for the first one (Jean -Claude Brialy in a short appearance )is killed in the first fifteen minutes ,the second male reporter only intervenes in the last third. They put the weight on Françoise Arnoul (whose voice over is heard now and then in case the viewer does not get the picture)who succeeds in breaking up the ring almost single-handedly: A female journalist against white slave trade ,it was woman's lib before its time.
Georges Lacombe disowned this effort: the numerous cabaret acts get in the way and do not bring anything to the movie, except for the moment when the black junkie warns Françoise while carrying on singing.
A lot of very disturbing women are involved :a false fortune teller (Germaine Kerjean) , and a cast against type Renée Faure as the gang leader ,another women's lib's manifesto,so to speak.
