When "The Dream Team" comes to a town, plenty of nightmares are surely to follow, especially after the team employs Grady Fletcher (Michael Horton, in his twelfth and final appearance in the role) as its accountant.
Columbus Ventures is financed by Everett Buffum (Frank Converse), who operates in association with J. Peter Carmody (John D'Aquino), Toni Shaw (Yvette Nipar) and, now, Grady Fletcher, whom they discuss as the perfect candidate to convince locals to approve of the construction of "Marina Amerciana," a convention center proposed in coastal Maine between the communities of Cabot Cove and Craggey Neck.
Cabot Cove Realtor Pauline Higgins (Mary Gordon Murray) immediately objects to the project, which would compete with shoppes and rental units in the community, she thereby organizing a protest rally.
Doctor Seth Hazlitt (William Windom) organizes a protest of his own, as Marina Americana would displace the dilapidated Cabot Cove Lighthouse, which he intends to protect as an historical monument.
Lorna Buffum (Katherine Cannon), the estranged wife of Everett, arrives in town to attempt to expose Columbus Ventures as an operation of swindlers, and also to harm Everett and Toni Shaw, who has usurped Lorna's place in her husband's life.
Denver Martin (Charles Napier) arrives from Darwin Key, Florida, to expose the operation as corrupt for draining his late mother's bank account, transferring her $75,000 to an offshore account, and causing her untimely demise.
Noah Farmer (Jay Patterson), a desk clerk at Hill House Inn, attempts to accommodate "The Dream Team," while investing in properties for which he anticipates their intent to purchase for their project.
To shake any doubts of the legitimacy of this operation, Grady invites Aunt Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury), Sheriff Mort Metzger (Ron Masak) and other locals, including Travis Lawder (Richardson Morse) to a presentation of the proposed construction, at which members offer wondrous promises to benefit the communities, even to win over Seth's doubts with their plan for a lighthouse restoration project.
Behind the scenes, much wheeling and dealing transpires, as it has in Cambria, Oregon, where the team has faced opposition from an environmentalist society to delay construction, and in Darwin Key, Florida, where the results of hurricanes have postponed construction.
But in Cabot Cove, while objections now seem to become assuaged, Columbus Ventures plans to move forward--or, at least until a murder complicates matters.
While Jessica, Sheriff Metzger and Deputy Andy Broom (Louis Herthum) investigate the murder, Grady comes up with an idea to raise funds through private donations, and five days later, "The Dream Team" raises four million dollars, or at least until something else comes up to push Grady Fletcher into even deeper hot water. Grady doesn't float through life all that easily.
