L’immortelle
Written and directed by Alain Robbe-Grillet
France, 1963
Just by examining the title, L’immortelle appears to be the quintessential Alain Robbe-Grillet film. It’s French, it’s feminine (that is, it’s being used to describe a woman), and it translates to “The Immortal”, a reference to how often the woman appears posthumously thanks to its unique narrative structure. Robbe-Grillet is primarily known as a writer, and known in the film world for having penned Resnais’s equally immortal Last Year at Marienbad just 2 years before this feature. The sudden explosion of discussion for Marienbad quickly made it synonymous with French arthouse flair. It was difficult yet rewarding; beautiful yet quietly violent. His hand in Marienbad is immediately evident in L’immortelle, even down to Resnais’s influence in spending half the film covering the surrounding architecture. Despite exclusion from discussion of those involved with the nouvelle vague...

After ten long years of painstaking development, "Life of Pi" finally made it to the screen. And there were many times that Fox 2000 chief Elizabeth Gabler, who optioned it right after it was published, did not think that it would happen. Only when Ang Lee came along four years ago did it become possible. The device of using the older Pi (Irfann Khan) as the window into the story came from screenwriter David Magee, who was hired on the basis of his moving Oscar-nominated screenplay for the J. M. Barry biopic "Finding Neverland." (See also our interviews with Ang Lee, rookie actor Suraj Sharma, and the VFX supervisor.) "Finding Neverland," Gabler explains, "was a really good sample of the kind of work we needed to look at for this kind of screenplay. First of all, it was a good adaptation, it had adult and child protagonists, it was mystical to a large degree,...

Since the news broke yesterday at THR that Channing Tatum was apparently shepherding a new cinematic variant of the Peter Pan story to the big screen, the internet has buckled under the weight of its own confusion. The Channing Tatum? Dear John, no!
Before our minds are put to rest, however, and the universe can go back to its laws of nature, the question of whether he is attached as actor or producer is not the only uncertainty that has people scratching their heads. What exactly is the thing called?
Initially reported as Peter Pan Begins – please God not some tragic attempt to Nolanise Neverland with tumblers and growly voices – a update to the original article now references the project simply as Pan.
Also attached, albeit less ambiguously, are writer Billy Ray (Shattered Glass) and producer Paul Roth, who will follow box office bombshell Alice In Wonderland up with further literary adaptations Oz,...
