Canadian producers C.S. Roy and Stéphanie Morissette have unveiled a first look at “V F C,” an adaptive feature project blending traditional filmmaking with biofeedback audio technology.
The project marks C.S. Roy’s directorial debut and stars Elisapie Isaac, the Inuk singer-songwriter, as a female neuroscientist who develops a rare form of melophobia after experiencing a musical Stendhal Syndrome. Witnessing her colleagues strangely changing behaviour over repeated exposure with the same piece of music, she flees and tries to find shelter away from a pervasive, music-filled environment.
“V F C,” both an arthouse horror movie and an augmented reality experience, allows each viewer to hear a customized soundtrack and musical score based on real-time biofeedback through a pair of Eeg (electroencephalogram) headsets and headphones.
Along Isaac, “V F C” stars Etienne Lou, Matthew Kabwe, and newcomer Ambica Sharma. The film shot in Montreal and the Eastern Townships in Quebec in April.

Time has caught up with Bulgarian animation director Theodore Ushev. After making more than a dozen dark, allegorical shorts (“Blood Manifest” was animated with his own blood), his latest — “Blind Vaysha” (from the Nfb) — has captured the zeitgeist about our tumultuous times as well as his first Oscar nomination.
Ushev, who specializes in linocut block printing, ambitiously recreated the century-old process for his animated work, adapted from the short story by his friend, Georgi Gospodinov, about a woman cursed with a green left eye that sees the past and a right brown eye that glimpses the future.

“I wanted to personalize this anxiety of being pressed between the past and the future,” Ushev told IndieWire. “I think that many people are very nostalgic for the past. And, of course, they’re afraid of the future. And now they’re afraid even more.

Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.
