Broadway has never seen anything quite like Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. Oh, pieces of it have been seen before - the modern-meets-traditional costumes were done in Hamilton, ensemble members have been playing their own instruments since at least John Doyle's landmark revival of Sweeney Todd, and actors have been performing in the aisles since time immemorial. But still, it's never been done quite like this.
For one thing, for an adaptation of mammoth Russian novel War and Peace, it's amazingly entertaining.

Franco Zeffirelli once remarked that directors rarely staged Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” effectively, because they either emphasized the comedy or the drama and rarely got the right balance. The same could be said of almost any musical written by Stephen Sondheim. Back in the 1970s, director Hal Prince almost always got it right, from “Company” to “Sweeney Todd.” Broadway theatergoers didn’t know how lucky we were. In hindsight, we do, thanks to John Doyle. Doyle almost always gets it wrong, making Sondheim’s shows all about the angst. His most egregious failure was the 2006 Broadway revival of “Company,” which excised all.

Making a creditable dramatic theater debut in an underwhelming project, Jason Sudeikis puts his own gentle funnyman spin on John Keating, the inspirational English teacher at the starchy all-boys preparatory school in Dead Poets Society. That role's indelible association with Robin Williams, who played the character onscreen in Peter Weir's 1989 film, turns out to be less of a snag than the material itself. Director John Doyle brings his customary stripped-down elegance to the production, and elicits sensitive performances from the young actors playing Keating's students. But Tom Schulman's thin adaptation of his Oscar-winning screenplay exposes its contrivances...

It’s hard enough to revive a musical that didn’t work the first time; that’s why John Doyle’s new version of The Color Purple is rightfully such a sensation. But it may be an even harder job to revive a musical that works quite well, has already returned repeatedly and successfully, and is much beloved as is, or was. That last sentence is basically Bartlett Sher’s calling card — he directed the recent Tony-winning revivals of South Pacific and The King and I — but it is even more so the dilemma he faced in staging the new Fiddler on the Roof that opens tonight at the Broadway Theatre, where the 1964 original ended its run in 1972. That he has made of it a show that feels entirely fresh and specifically engaged in the world of 2015, without wasting the gift of its innate beauty and huge emotional power, is...

How can deprivation become joy? That’s not only the animating question of The Color Purple, the 1982 Alice Walker novel made into a musical in 2005, but also the operating principle behind John Doyle’s triumphant revival of that musical, starring the stupendous Cynthia Erivo in her Broadway debut. For once, the word “revival” is apt: Doyle’s intervention amounts to a kind of theatrical CPR, restarting the heart of a show that, in its original production, seemed to die before your eyes. It was difficult then to diagnose the underlying cause; the songs, by the trio of Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, were unusually good, and Marsha Norman’s book made neat work of the difficult job of reshaping an epistolary text for the stage. The performances were fine. But something undermined those qualities, turning a story that was electrifying in print into a big, energy-sucking slog from...

A sleek, vastly improved and altogether wonderful revival of “The Color Purple” opened Thursday at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The original 2005 staging was a fine, solid show, but under John Doyle’s new, inspired direction the musical emerges as one of the most adult shows ever written. The word adult in this context means sex. The musical is simply filled with sex of all kinds. There’s a lot of sex as violence. Some sex translates into love. But for the most part, there’s sex just for the fun of it, especially in songs like “Push Da Button” and “Any.
