Spanish auteur Carlos Saura, known for a lifetime of movies made in the shadow of his country’s civil war under the Franco dictatorship and its aftermath, has died. He was 91.
The Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences said Saura died at home “surrounded by his loved ones.”
Fernando Mendez-Leite, president of the Spanish Academy, paid tribute to Saura, saying the filmmaker’s “highly personal, varied work and creative has left an indelible mark on the history of our cinema and Spanish culture. Personally I’m very sad, because I had the pleasure of knowing and dealing with Carlos for many years, whom I considered an a teacher and a friend.”
Saura had been due to receive the Academy’s Honorary Goya Award at a ceremony Saturday but instead received the statuette at home this week. The Spanish Academy added the 37th edition of the Goya Awards will pay tribute to “an unrepeatable creator.

This year’s San Sebastian Film Festival is in mourning as Spanish director Mario Camus, celebrated for his sober but caring adaptations of distinguished Spanish novels such as “La Colmena” – written by Nobel prize winner Camilo José Cela – Ignacio Aldecoa’s “Young Sánchez” and “The Holy Innocents” by Miguel Delibes, died on Saturday in Santander, northern Spain, the city where he was born. Camus was 86.
Among his career achievements, Camus took the Berlin Golden Bear for best film with “La Colmena” (1983), a Cannes Prize Ecumenical Jury prize for “The Holy Innocents” (1984). Such films proved a highpoint in Spain’s ruling socialist left’s dream, pushed when Pilar Miró took over as head of Spain’s Icaa film institute in 1982, of maintaining Spanish cinema’s social edge but priming its production levels and taking it onto a European stage.

One’s awareness of modern avant-garde flamenco will get a boost from this exciting, impressive documentary about the progressive Spanish bailarina Rocío Molina, a fireball of a dancer whose powerful improvisations get our hearts beating faster. All the earmarks of traditional flamenco are there — grace, style and a fierce independent attitude — in a woman who loves what she does, and is not trying to push an art form to its next level. It’s pretty inspiring, even for an amateur fan like myself. Dance experts note, this is a film review.

For the last 40 years, Dance Films Association has produced Dance on Camera its annual film festival. Considered the “mother” of dance film festivals this year’s edition will showcase a diverse array of films including documentaries, shorts, features, and experimental works that celebrate all forms of dance. “Dance on Camera is an exuberant hybrid. Its roots hold the seeds of innovation inherent in the concept of combining dance with cinematography in ways that alter one’s perception of both mediums,” boasts Joanna Ney, co-curator of the Dance on Camera Festival.
Hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Dance Films Association, and running February 1-5, 2013, the series will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Los Tarantos, Francisco Rovira Beleta's Oscar-nominated flamenco classic, with a special screening. Other highlights include the world premiere of Maclovia Martel’s documentary about the life of her mother, Carmen Gutierrez, the first Mexican dancer to perform on Broadway and the Closing Night film To Dance Like a Man, a charming documentary featuring Cuban identical triplets who are students at Cuba’s renowned National Ballet School.

The star-crossed lovers are Sara Lezana and the mesmerizing Antonio Gades, best remembered for his dancing (and acting) in Carlos Saura’s flamenco trilogy that began with Carmen. The film was nominated for Best Foreign film in 1963 and has not been shown for many years. Actress Maria Esteve, the daughter of the iconic Gades will make a personal appearance at the screening.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s and Dance Films Association's Dance on Camera festival runs February 1-5, 2013. Screenings will be held at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (located at 144 West 65th Street).

Consisting of 1981′s Bodas De Sangre (Blood Wedding), 1983′s Carmen and 1986′s El Amor Brujo (Love, The Magician) the Flamenco Trilogy from director Carlos Saura comprise a curious set. Linked by a common cast (Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos and Laura del Sol) and all of them shot with a deliberately stagey feel, they will doubtless appeal to fans of vigorous and passionate Spanish dancing but may struggle to find an audience outside of those admittedly narrow tramlines.
Blood Wedding begins with the cast of a dance production applying their make-up before they launch into an energetic rehearsal under the tutelage of Antonio Gades’ choreographer (who assisted with the choreography for the entire trilogy). The wedding of the title is spoiled by the bride running off with Gades’ Leonardo, who the groom must track down and confront. Though I typically take great care to avoid hyping up anything in the “reality TV” genre, both in my online writing and in real life, I’m going to make a small exception to that self-imposed rule by mentioning that the televised dance competition known as “Dancing With The Stars” opened its ninth season last week. I am proud to admit that I’ve never sat through a single episode of that series and I don’t plan to change my viewing habits in any way, despite the reference.
Featuring a cast of obnoxious pseudo-celebrities that I would rather have gone through life never hearing about, I did take a few minutes just now to visit the Dwts website (no, I will not provide a link!) before the contrived artificiality of its premise and rank stupidity of its presentation forced me to shut down my browser and re-gather my thoughts.
