Soccer Aid for Unicef 2022, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv last week from the London Stadium, has raised a record-breaking £15,673,728 so far for Unicef’s vital work giving children around the world the care-free, play filled childhoods they are entitled to.
This record-breaking amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and The Power of Nutrition who have matched donations up to £4 million, meaning double the difference for children. This figure has smashed last year’s record total for money raised on the night.
The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out London Stadium with 54,410 fans in attendance, 10 years on from the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The match ended 4-1 on penalties to Soccer Aid World XI, taking them into the overall lead with 6-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match. The Cat and the Canary
& The Ghost Breakers
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1939, 1940 / 72, 83 min.
Starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard
Cinematography by Charles B. Lang
Directed by Elliott Nugent, George Marshall
Bob Hope’s brand of comedy may have been extinct by the sixties but it was alive and kicking in the pages of God Save the Mark, Donald E. Westlake’s comic crime novel about a schnook on the run for a murder he didn’t commit. Published in 1967, Westlake’s farce resembles one of Hope’s own movies; the pace is frenetic and the patter is as snappy as the comedian’s in his prime—a golden age exemplified by his one-two punch from 1939 and 1940, The Cat and the Canary and The Ghost Breakers. Those films present Hope in excelsis but in the hands of directors Elliott Nugent and George Marshall they serve as master classes in the tricky art of the scare comedy.

A near-spotless restoration on the 104 year-old adaptation of the Jules Verne classic finally presents it in a form where we can judge its merits. The screenplay is an erratic jumble, imposing serial thrill elements onto an undigested amalgam of Vingt mille lieues sous les mers with its sequel L’Ile mystérieuse. But the physical production is state of the art for 1916, with an impressive live action submarine mockup and even more impressive scenes filmed underwater, reportedly a feature film first. Even better than the vivid restoration is a fact-filled commentary by film expert Anthony Slide. It’s no casual conversational chat track, but a wealth of good information about every aspect of the film, all delivered in good humor.

The late John Singleton, in the foreword for Donald Bogle’s new book “Hollywood Black,” tells an affecting story of watching movies at the Century Drive-In in Inglewood, Calif. from his bedroom window, and how, from there, he fell in love with filmmaking and telling black stories.
“Without hearing any sound, I could see horror movies, actions films and my favorites, Blaxploitation movies right outside my bedroom window,” Singleton wrote. “I think that marked the beginning of my lifelong movie odyssey to see as many films as I could and to figure out the way that directors, writers, and actors told stories on screen.
“Because I was most affected by the black movies, I asked myself how those black people got on screen? Who put them there?” he continued. “Even then, my struggle was to make the fantasy of filmmaking become my reality.”

It’s a wonder movie from the 1930s, a political fantasy that imagines a Utopia of peace and kindness hidden away in a distant mountain range — or in our daydreams. Sony’s new restoration is indeed impressive. Ronald Colman is seduced by a vision of a non-sectarian Heaven on Earth, while Savant indulges his anti-Frank Capra grumblings in his admiring but hesitant review essay.

Near the turn of the century a struggling war correspondent named Edgar Wallace began churning out detective stories for British monthlies like Detective Story Magazine to help make the rent. Creative to a fault, his preposterously prolific output (exacerbated by ongoing gambling debts) soon earned him a legion of fans along with a pointedly ambiguous sobriquet, “The Man Who Wrote Too Much.”
A reader new to Wallace’s work could be excused for thinking the busy writer was making it up as he went along… because that’s pretty much what he did. He dictated his narratives, unedited, into a dictaphone for transcription by his secretary where they would then...

A Tribute to King Kong takes place as part of the The St. Louis International Film Festival Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 6:00pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The first film screened will be the new documentary Long Live The King, which explores the enduring fascination with one of the biggest stars — both literally and figuratively — in Hollywood history: the mighty King Kong. Produced and directed by Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger, the creative team behind the award-winning “Beast Wishes,” the documentary devotes primary attention to the 1933 classic, celebrating the contributions of filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, and Bruce Cabot, writer Edgar Wallace, and especially stop-motion innovator Willis O’Brien. But Kong’s legacy is also fully detailed: the sequel “Son of Kong,” the cinematic kin “Mighty Joe Young,” the Dino DeLaurentis and Peter Jackson remakes, even the Japanese versions by Toho Studios.

"Hey, what's up James? It's your man Montell Jordan and I just want to wish you a very, very happy birthday," the singer said to a surprised Corden.

There are no shortage of headline grabbing players in the Premier League, but one of the narratives on the back pages in the last few weeks has been the excellent form of West Ham’s midfield linchpin Mark Noble. The Hammers’ home grown star has been in excellent form for Slaven Bilic’s impressive side this season, and is due a testimonial at the club in March, a pretty rare thing for a player of just 28.
When people talk about Noble, though, one other subject always rears its head: England. It seems incongruous that a reliable performer with years of Premier League experience on his CV is yet to get an England call up, especially in a world where Leon Osman gets a run-out.
If there’s anything to console him as he watches Euro 2016 at home, it’s the fact that he’s far from...

I've previously written about Dwayne Johnson (here) as what I described as a “race shifter;” but long before The Rock, there was another movie "race shifter" who you could say paved the way for Johnson. I’m referring to that other Johnson by the name of Noble. Noble Johnson had one of the most impressive and longest careers as a supporting actor appearing in some 150 films, from the early silent period, starting in 1915, well into the sound era, appearing in his last film, in 1950, 28 years before his death. But he was also, along with Oscar Micheaux, a true black film pioneer. Back in 1915, before Micheaux started making his own films in 1919, Noble, along with...

A brace from Dimitri Payet saw West Ham United ease to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Upton Park.
The attacker – who joined The Hammers for £10 million from Marseille during the summer transfer window – opened the scoring with an unstoppable curled effort from the edge of the area into Tim Krul’s top right-hand corner, before adding a second three minutes after the restart following a bar shattering effort from debutant Victor Moses.
The evening was a sorry one for Steve McClaren and his Magpies. The former England manager couldn’t avenge That 3-2 defeat by Slaven Bilić’s Croatia during the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign while he has now overseen Newcastle’s worst start to a season for 10-years. If things weren’t bad enough for the away side’s head coach, his team are now bottom of the Barclays Premier League with only two points,...

Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in the Premier League for Spurs hasn’t started to plan and the manager now faces the harsh reality of playing for most of the game with ten men after Kyle Naughton was unfairly red carded for a hand ball in the box.
It is true enough that Naughton’s hands were well above his head, and he could well have saved Kevin Nolan’s shot from hitting the back of the net, sending him off was particularly excessive considering the penalty was given.
Sadly for West Ham, having watched Naughton leave the pitch, Mark Noble stepped up and put his penalty effort wide…

Read some IMDb synopses of Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) films, and the filmmaker’s commitment to dealing with racial prejudice becomes clear. The Symbol of the Unconquered (1920): “Racists learn that the land a negro owns lies over a vast oil field, and threaten his life when he refuses to sell.” Murder in Harlem (1935): “A black night watchman at a chemical factory finds the body of a murdered white woman. After he reports it, he finds himself accused of the murder.” God’s Step Children (1938): “A young light-skinned Negress struggles to find her place in both the black and the white worlds.”
Micheaux was the fifth of over ten children born of former slaves on a farm in Metropolis, Illinois. Soon after moving to Chicago at the age of 17, he took up a job in the stockyards, and, later, another at the steel mills. He established a...

Tis’ the season for the rumour mill to run amok and it has churned out a humdinger by suggesting Alan Pardew is plotting a double swoop on former employers West Ham for midfield duo Mohamed Diame and Mark Noble.
Lest we forget Noble and Diame are names that have appeared prominently on the Newcastle gossip grapevine on numerous occasions in the past and, as was the case then, these fresh links will more than likely prove to be hot air.

A late double was enough to seal all three points for West Ham as they defeated Norwich City in an important relegation clash at Upton Park.
Collins’ header six minutes from time gave the Hammers the lead and Mohamed Diame sealed the victory with a deflected finish on the counter-attack.
Norwich City got the games opening chance after eight minutes when Gary Hooper rose to meet Nathan Redmond’s cross and headed towards goal, forcing a brilliant save from Adrian.
The keeper was at it again shortly after when Redmond chipped a ball over the top to Robert Snodgrass but he was thwarted by the heroics of Adrian, desperate to keep a fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Mark Noble could make a shock deadline day move to the North East to join Newcastle United, if the Magpies can see off interest from Everton.
The central midfielder would be replacing Yohan Cabaye – who has already left the club for French giants Psg – and TalkSPORT are reporting that they may be in a race for his signature with Everton. Alan Pardew handed Noble his senior West Ham debut in 2004 and is thought to be a big admirer of the Englishman.
The hole left in Newcastle’s midfield following Cabaye’s departure will be a big one to fill but Noble would add the work rate needed to stop their recent poor form – The Magpies have picked up just one win in their last five games and face a tough test tomorrow against fierce rivals Sunderland at St. James’ Park.

West Ham secured a vital away win for beleagured boss Sam Allardyce as the Hammers move out of the relegation zone with a 0-2 win in Wales following a horrific cup week.
A torrid week had seen the East London side lose 5-0 to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in last weekend’s Fa Cup, followed by a 6-0 midweek hammering by Man City in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, effectively ending their hopes of reaching the Wembley decider.
However, a well-taken goal from Carlton Cole, and an late insurance from reliable midfielder Mark Noble secured a first league win since November, and moved the Hammers out of the relegation-zone on goal difference.

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 15 meetings with West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini’s team entertain the East Londoners at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Jack Collison scored a second half winner for the Hammers at Upton Park in March 2009, but that is the only victory they’ve recorded over City since back-to-back wins in 2006. Sam Allardyce remains short of striking options, so West Ham fans shall fondly remember Dean Ashton’s brace during an Fa Cup run to the final.
The Hammers are not much better off defensively either and come into this two-legged tie off the back of four defeats in their last five. Big Sam chose the Fa Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest to blood youngsters en masse – a move that resulted in a 5-0 thumping.

On the heels of my recent piece about Dwayne Johnson (Here) who I described as a “race shifter,” it brought to mind another movie race shifter who you could say paved the way for Johnson. I’m referring to that other Johnson by the name of Noble. Noble Johnson had one of the most impressive and longest careers as a supporting actor appearing in some 150 films, from the early silent period, starting in 1915, well into the sound era, appearing in his last film, in 1950, some 28 years before his death. But he was also, along with Oscar Micheaux, a true black film pioneer. Back in 1915, before Micheaux started making his own films in 1919, Noble, along with his brother George,...

West Ham United’s chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan have released an open letter in support of their beleaguered manager Sam Allardyce in the wake of the club’s embarrassing 0-5 reverse to Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in the Fa Cup.
“We know Sam has not lost his ambition or desire and is committed to making West Ham United a great Premier League club”
The letter went on to state:
“It is never enjoyable being knocked out of a cup competition and losing by such a large scoreline to a lower division side is hard to take for us all. We thought the youngsters gave their all and did not stop trying, but in the end Nottingham Forest’s experience proved too much for us. Championship promotion hopefuls Nottingham Forest host Premier League strugglers West Ham United anxious to improve their record against the Londoners at the City Ground.

Premier League strugglers West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion played on an enthralling rollercoaster 3-3 draw at Upton Park that left neutrals satisified, but neither side any better off.
Joe Cole opened the scoring for the hosts inside five minutes before a late first half brace from Nicolas Anelka put the Baggies ahead. Modibo Maiga and Hammers captain Kevin Nolan struck in quick succession to complete the turnaround after the break.
Saido Berahino rescued a point for West Brom, however, and it could have been more but for the goal frame. His late free kick rattled the woodwork, so both sides shared the spoils.
West Ham survived an early scare when Chris Brunt fired into the side-netting for Albion, and then went ahead in the fourth minute. Joe Cole profited from Diego Lugano’s defensive error after Carlton Cole won an aerial ball. Passes were exchanged...

West Ham United host West Bromwich Albion protecting a record of a decade unbeaten in home meetings. Brian Deane scored three times – twice at the right end and then in his own net – in November 2003 as the Baggies edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3.
The Hammers last entertained Albion in March and ran out 3-1 winners, but they will still be without Andy Carroll – the difference between the sides that day. Sam Allardyce has further intensified the pressure on himself by describing Saturday’s lunchtime encounter with West Brom as “a must win” as West Ham have slipped into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all given the Hammers hidings in recent outings with only an extended run in the Capital One Cup affordng fans crumbs of Christmas comfort.

Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the Premier League thanks to Theo Walcott’s second half double and a Lukas Podolski strike that downed London rivals West Ham United at Upton Park. The hosts had led through Carlton Cole.
Hammers midfielder Mark Noble was first to work Wojciech Szczesny in the visiting goal, forcing the Pole to palm away a free kick. This followed a start where the visiting defence had to deal with a flurry of crosses.
Spanish stopper Adrian kept out a powerful Santi Cazorla header on 15 minutes when West Ham failed to fully clear their lines from a Gunners corner. Early home side pressure quickly dissolved in customary waves of pressure from Arsene Wenger’s team.
Carlton Cole gave the Hammers some rare respite with hold-up play that invited Mohamed Diame to sting the palms of Szczesny with from long range. Walcott then fired wide...

West Ham bubbles flat as they are held by Poyet’s boys.
It ended in stalemate at Upton Park between West Ham and Sunderland, a point that will do neither sides hopes of survival the power of good and will increase the pressure on Hammers boss Sam Allardyce.
The first half was a tense affair with chances few and far between and both teams showing a lack of cutting edge, whilst looking nervous in front of goal. With Allardyce and Gus Poyet lining up with a 4-5-1 formation, space was limited and the two sides often cancelled each other out, with Maiga and Altidore starved of service for their respective sides.
The game had all the hallmarks of the cliched ‘six pointer’ with nerves apparent but quality less so, and both teams struggling to find any rhythm. The first real chance of the game fell to...

Premier League basement club Crystal Palace entertain West Ham United for the first time in the top flight for over 15 years on Tuesday.
The last five meetings between these two London clubs have come in the Championship with Palace winning the 2004 playoff final. Tony Pulis knows as he prepares for his Eagles home debut that his side have only ever won three league games against the Hammers.
Sam Allardyce’s West Ham are one of a clutch of sides hovering three points above the relegation zone. Victory in this capital city derby will take his team up to 11th place for time being.
It would be a precious time for Palace to pick up their third win of the campaign and move off the bottom. Their form, however, gives fans little festive cheer. The Hammers meanwhile ended a winless run stretching five matches with victory over Fulham at the weekend.

Norwich and West Ham are struggling of late. The former are certainly in worse form, and manager Chris Hughton knows he’s running out of time to turn the club around before the board will consider relieving him of his duties. He’s not been helped by the lack of goals from his two summer signings Gary Hooper and Rocky Van Wolfswinkel, and hopes the former can finally kick-start his Norwich career this weekend.
Big Sam also has goal troubles with West Ham. The side are greatly paying the price for over-relying on Andy Carroll, who’s been out all season, without having a viable replacement. As a result, the Hammers have often named a starting XI without a recognised striker, or with midfielder Kevin Nolan pushed higher up the pitch. It’s a game that doesn’t promise many...

Sam Allardyce was proud of his team’s performance and less than happy with the referee’s performance as his West Ham side lost in the final minutes to Everton 3-2.
Mark Noble was given a controversial red card and Allardyce felt that, along with Romelu Lukaku’s half time introduction, was the difference.
“Up until the sending off, I thought the players were great,” said Allardyce. “After losing your last home game you want a response from your players and I think we got that. Everton a great side and we matched them. I’m really disappointed that we lost.”
“Lukaku was a huge difference. Everton played off him and we found that more difficult but our defensive qualities shone through as we restricted them up until Baines scored the first goal.”
The late defeat was even more bittersweet as Lukau had been a summer transfer target for the Irons.

Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to grab an 85th minute winner for Everton, extending their unbeaten start to the season. It was heartbreak for West Ham and Mark Noble at Upton Park, as the Irons captain scored from the spot to give his side the lead for the second time, only to get sent off soon after.
Leighton Baines scored two free kicks from near identical positions as the Toffees kept up their unbeaten record against the Hammers, with this result making it twelve consecutive games without defeat against their London opponents. Ravel Morrison’s deflected drive had given West Ham the lead.
The first significant chance had come after just five minutes when an Everton counter led to Jussi Jaaskelainen saving a Kevin Mirallas shot.
On 31 minutes, the ball went out to Matt Jarvis on the left. The England winger cut inside, ghosted past two men and laid the ball to Ravel Morrison.

Everybody loves a surprise package. A player that nobody gave a hope for at the beginning of the season. That somebody who nobody had heard of in August but by January was touted as the next Rooney/Gerrard/Le Tissier.
In a time where the media seems to love players to fail (please see Torres. F) it is refreshing to see a player rise up and challenge the very best that the English League has to offer.
Obviously it is difficult to determine what constitutes a surprise package. Is it the money spent on the person or the relative obscurity of the player before the season starts? Whichever it may be, this article addresses 10 players who have arguably been a surprise and contributed to their respective teams even thought the chips were stacked against them.

Demba Ba could return to the starting line-up to face his former club, after being cup-tied for Thursday’s Europa League win over Steaua Bucharest. England striker Andy Carroll is likely to make his Hammers debut after completing a season-long loan move from parent club Liverpool this week. The striker, who cost Liverpool a British record fee of £35 million back in January 2010, re-teams with his old Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce and good friend Kevin Nolan, hoping that his chemistry can once again provide a deadly partnership in the Premier League.

The striker, who cost Liverpool a British record fee of £35 million back in January 2010, re-teams with his old Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce and good friend Kevin Nolan, hoping that his chemistry can once again provide a deadly partnership in the Premier League.
Missing for West Ham today will be left-back George McCartney (ankle) and midfielder Jack Collison (knee). Also facing late fitness tests and major doubts are central defenders James Collins (calf) and Winston Reid (knee).

Russell Brand is a very unique interviewee as one of Access Hollywood's producers - and his father - found out on Wednesday night.
At an FX premiere event for the networks summer slate, the late night newcomer grabbed Senior Field Producer Mark Noble's phone during the Brit's Access Hollywood interview, and called our man's dad.

"Mark's dad, this is Russell," the Brit said into the phone. "I'm on Mark's show with Mark.
"I just wanted to say that Mark is doing a wonderful job here. You've raised a fine -- if a little ...

West Ham kept up their terrific away form with an outstanding victory at Oakwell as they took apart Barnsley by securing a 4-0 win.
This was a match in which Sam Alladyce’s side had to win. And they did, in style.
Skipper Kevin Nolan opened the scoring inside the first seven minutes after pouncing on a Matt Taylor corner for his 11th of the campaign.
Barnsley’s out-of-form hitman Craig Davies had a long range shot parried by Robert Green moments later and that was the closest that the Tykes came in the whole 90 minutes.
Nicky Maynard doubled the Hammers’ lead in the 23rd minute with a long range strike that beat Barnsley stopper David Button.
It was game over at this point, and the Londoners added insult to injury 10 minutes before the break with Mark Noble taking advantage of a Button error.
And former Oakwell star Ricardo Vaz...

Pharell Williams is 37 years old today. Voted The Best Dressed Man in the World by Esquire in 2005, Williams is one half of The Neptunes, one of the biggest music producing teams working today, working with some of the world’s most popular musicians. His music has appeared on the soundtracks to numerous TV shows and films. He’ll be both co-producing (along with Brian Grazer) and co-starring in a film titled Zoom, currently listed as “In Development.” This would be his feature-film acting debut. In the film, a troubled West Virginia youth attends a music academy and finds his voice and a place in the world.

I re-watched this last week via Netflix, and just discovered that the entire film is on YouTube, thus I’m sharing.
It’s a 1932 film called The Most Dangerous Game, and stars Leslie Banks as a big game hunter with a taste for the world’s most exotic prey – human beings; specifically, his house-guests, played by Fay Wray and Joel McCrea. However, I’m sharing it specifically for you to check out Noble Johnson as Ivan, the mute brute, loyal to his master, the big game hunter.
He’s the sole African American actor in a sea of mostly white men; however, he doesn’t play a black man. He plays a Russian, and he’s essentially in “white face,” we could say, and covered in hair. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter because, as I said, he’s mute. His job is to look and be mean, taking orders from the boss,...
