France’s film industry is undergoing a new MeToo reckoning, dominating news cycles, policy debates and even the goodie bag of the Cesar Awards’ nominees dinner, which included a flyer headlined, “The cultural sector together against sexist and sexual violence.”
The French #MeToo movement also made its way into the Berlinale, where actor Nora Hamzawi said that director Jacques Doillon’s upcoming film “Third Grade” — in which Hamzawi stars — shouldn’t be released due to the sexual misconduct allegations recently filed against the filmmkaker.
France’s major producers guilds have also issued a statement demanding the National Film Board (Cnc) and the Minister of Culture to put specific guidelines in place. French actresss Judith Godrèche has filed an official police complaint against Jacques Doillon, accusing him of two counts of sexual assault in the 1980s when she was a minor.
News of the complaint came just one day after Godrèche revealed in an interview with Le Monde newspaper she had filed a complaint against director Benoît Jacquot for “rapes with violence of a minor less than 15-years-old”.
The Paris Prosecutor’s office has since confirmed to Deadline that a case has been opened.
Godrèche, who is now 51, lived with Jacquot for six years and appeared in his films The Beggars and The Disenchanted, before leaving him in her early 20s.
The actress says she was 14-years-old when the relationship began while the director was 40 and that she was “under his influence”. Jacquot has denied the accusations saying they were in a “loving” relationship.

The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.

He uses warm, offbeat humour to avoid farce as he explores continuum of sexuality in this tale of a Claire (Anna Demoustier), who gets more than she bargained for after telling her seriously ill friend Laura (Isild Le Besco) that she'll take care of her husband David (Romain Duris) and baby. It turns out that David has a particularly unusual - and for Claire, initially challenging - way of coping with grief, setting the stage for an exploration of masculinity and femininity that will run through the film. Ozon isn't afraid to challenge his audience but he always makes sure he entertains along the way.

Tucked away from the limelight at the Berlinale is the diverse and well-attended Generation section, themed on films devoted to depicting children. This, it is clear, is not the same thing as movies for children, though the two categories certainly and frequently joyfully overlap. Film Movement has debuted an official Us trailer for the upcoming release of Maïwenn's My King, originally titled Mon roi, a French relationship drama starring Vincent Cassel & Emmanuelle Bercot. Bercot plays Tony, a woman who wakes up in a hospital after a serious ski accident and recounts her "turbulent relationship" with a man named Georgio. The full cast includes Louis Garrel, Isild Le Besco and Chrystèle Saint Louis Augustin. This is actually a solid trailer, using music to help enhance the emotions in each scene rather than dialogue. And the film seems like a very powerful look and romance and love and the troubles that come with passion. Worth a watch even if you're unsure about this. After premiering at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival in the Galas Program, via Cohen Media, the double 40th César Award nominated The New Girlfriend received a limited theatrical release a year later for a meager box-office take just under one hundred and fifty thousand. Based on a novel by Ruth Rendell, Francois Ozon’s playful subversion of gender dynamics hinges on camp, recalling a legion of vintage queer classics from decades ago (as well as Ozon’s own darker, challenging early filmography when the auteur was referred to as a terrible enfant). As politically correct agendas continue to be applied to queer characters, engulfing deliberations of appropriate representation, items such as Ozon’s film have become a rarity in the English language market. But there’s a perverse mixture of dark comedy and psychological unrest portrayed here, and Ozon gleefully captures a neglected energy of queer cinema once again relegated to the periphery of good taste.

The Cannes Film festival was an exceptional edition for French films this year. A focus on the rising generation of French actors and directors that have been highlighted in Cannes and will most certainly be the stars of tomorrow was compiled by Unifrance chief Isabelle Giordano.
They are a force to be reckoned with. Unifrance films is ready to bet that you will certainly hear about these ten talented people. They represent the French cinema of today and will soon be on the screens worldwide.
Emmanuelle Bercot
An actress and a director, Emmanuelle Bercot began by enrolling at the Cours Florent drama school and taking dancing lessons after her baccalaureate. She graduated from Femis in 1998, after winning the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival for her short film "Les Vacances," in 1997. After her first few roles in the films of Jean-François Richet and Michel Deville, her career as an actress took off when Claude Miller gave her one of the main roles in "La Classe de neige" (1998). The following year, she made the headlines with the medium-length film she directed called "La Puce," presented in the selection of Un Certain Regard at Cannes. This film tells of the love affair between a 35-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl, played by Isild Le Besco.
Her first feature-length film, "Clément" (2001), is about the life of a troubled woman who has one adventure after another with various men until she meets a 14-yearold boy. Her second film, "Backstage" (2004), continues to explore teenage angst through a relationship between a hit singer and a young obsessional fan. She earned her first critical and public acclaim with "On My Way" (2013), the third film written by the director for Catherine Deneuve, in which the star plays a woman who has decided to leave everything behind and hit the road in France.
She was indisputably the most talked about person during the Cannes Film Festival 2015, both as an actress and a director. Thierry Frémaux surprised everyone by announcing that "Standing Tall," Emmanuelle Bercot’s fourth feature-length film would open the 68th Cannes Film Festival. Emmanuelle Bercot says that she has rediscovered the social fiber of her beginnings with this tale of juvenile delinquency. Alice Winocour
The director Alice Winocour started out at Femis. After going into law, she returned to film and won three prizes for her short film "Kitchen: Prix TV5" for the best French-language short film, best international short film and the Silver Bear at the Festival of Nations (Ebensee). For "Magic Paris," she was awarded the jury prize at the St. Petersburg International Documentary, Short Film and Animated Film Festival.
She continued her career by writing the script for the film "Ordinary," by Vladimir Perisic. At the Cannes Film Festival 2012, Alice Winocour made a marked entry in the international arena with a film by a woman about women and the unchanging way of looking at them. In the film "Augustine," we are told the story of a professor and his patient, played by Vincent Lindon and Soko respectively. In 2015, she brought out her second feature-length film, "Maryland," which was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. She is also the co-writer of "Mustang," by Denis Gamze Ergüven, presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.

The film is inspired by France’s real-life health scandal revolving around the diabetes drug Mediator, which is estimated to have caused the deaths of around 2,000 people before it was withdrawn from pharmacies in 2009.
Bercot and co-writer Séverine Bosschem’s screenplay is based on the book Médiator 150Mg: Combien de Morts? by Irène Frachon, a pulmonologist who was one of the first medical professionals to spot the link and suggested there had been a cover-up.

On My Skin: Barraud Explores the Essence of Monstrosity
There are moments within Antoine Barraud’s sophomore feature Portrait of the Artist that tend to feel enlivened with an arresting strangeness. There is the peripherally entertaining notion of provocative body horror shadowing us while we follow a filmmaker creating his latest project, simultaneously losing his grip on reality. But more often than not, the film feels like a thriller version of Frederick Wiseman’s National Gallery. Barraud’s French language title, Le Dos Rouge (basically The Red Back) was perhaps too literal of a title, and the allusion to Joyce’s classic text (though this is really more ‘as a middle aged man’) gives it a certain extra textual density since Joyce’s novel is an allusion to Daedalus, the man responsible for constructing the Labyrinth which entombed the deadly Minotaur in Greek Mythology.

Rendell has long supplied a bevy of European filmmakers with some of their most memorable titles, including Claude Miller’s Alias Betty (2001), Pedro Almodovar’s Live Flesh (1997), and perhaps, most notably, Claude Chabrol’s La Ceremonie (1994) and The Bridesmaid (2004). An excellent purveyor of strange and complicated relationships that often involve sublimated identities and tendencies that often lead to deadly scenarios, Rendell serves as an excellent template for Ozon with material that recalls the sexually transgressive explorations of his early career.

A re-energised Pula Film Festival, the biggest film festival in Croatia, will welcome top guests including Roger Michell, Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Gyorgi Palfi, Tudor Giurgiu and Mike Cahill.

It only takes five minutes, plus or minus. To contribute to an omnibus film, a collection of shorts unified by some general theme, shown together as a feature, is to nearly insure a loss, something to be forgotten. Let us hope this is not true for actress and filmmaker Isild Le Besco, who directed a contribution to the surprisingly strong portmanteau The Bridges of Sarajevo, which also features stand-out work by Jean-Luc Godard, Cristi Puiu, Ursula Meier, and a few others. Le Besco, when will be her time to shine? Primarily known as an actress, each time she steps behind the camera she makes something special. How sweat it is for Canadian film. There’ll be a maple syruppy touch to the Cannes Film Festival presence to the 67th Cannes Film Festival with a trio of Canuck films among today’s 17 Main Competition (we expect the number to possibly increase by at least one before the fest breaks). We have David Cronenberg, Atom Egoyan and while there is no Denys Arcand this year, the baton has been passed over to Xavier Dolan, who we believe becomes the youngest ever filmmaker to be included in the section. The influx of Canadian helmers means a depletion of U.S fare, with only the opener, Tommy Lee Jones and Bennett Miller breaking into the group.

The Official Selection for the 66th Cannes Film Festival has been unveiled in Paris.
At a press conference at the Ugc Normandie movie theatre on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux is set to reveal the 49 features from 28 countries selected for inclusion in this year’s festival, which runs from May 14-25.
As previously announced, Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman, will be the opening film on May 14, out of competition.
Last week, Party Girl was named as the opening film of the Un Certain Regard strand. The debut feature is from co-directors Marie Amachoukeli, Claire Burger and Samuel Theis.
As previously announced, the competition jury will be presided over by New Zealand director, producer and scriptwriter Jane Campion.

The first of underrated Gallic master Benoît Jacquot’s films to reach theaters on Us Shores since 2004 (he’s had steady output since then, however) is the extremely enjoyable, Farewell, My Queen. Based on a novel by Chantal Thomas, we’re witness to the last week of Marie Antoinette’s reign, as told through the eyes of a member of her court. Jacquot, whose films are often showcases for France’s most talented actresses, having crafted films for Isabelle Huppert, Isild Le Besco, and Virginie Ledoyen, is also no stranger to period royalty pieces, having helmed a 2004 film for French television concerning Princess Marie Bonaparte, starring Catherine Deneuve. With his latest effort, he’s given us a heady concoction of historical intrigue, with a tart hint of salaciousness that drains away the generally unrealistic nature of supposedly authentic reenactments.

We at Mubi think that celebrating the films of 2011 should be a celebration of film viewing in 2011. Since all film and video is "old" one way or another, we present Out of a Past, a small (re-) collection of some of our favorite retrospective viewings from 2011.
This year I ordered my favorite new experiences with old movies by the date when I saw them, rather than by the year when they were made. (The diary format reveals a large midyear viewing gap due to my own film shoot.) I chose rather arbitrarily, leaning toward works I haven't already called attention to; and I let myself run the list up to six films instead of five.

There's a feeling out there that France may be on the verge of another new wave: not of the politically radical 1950s kind, but one in which young, driven, women film-makers will be at the fore. Names being mentioned are Mia Hansen-Løve, Rebecca Zlotowski and Katell Quillévéré; their films have already electrified France and are beginning to spread elsewhere.
Of course, on one level, there is nothing unusual about French women film directors. From Agnès Varda to Claire Denis, Coline Serreau to Agnès Jaoui, women have been able to make their presence felt in French cinema. An instance of radical lo-fi homespun cinema: actress Isild Le Besco's short feature directorial debut, Demi-tarif. It stars four children, two young girls (Cindy David, Lila Salet), a boy (Kolia Litscher)...and Le Besco's camera. The three actors, each character from a different father, are stranded in Paris without their mother, and the only supervision they have is by the filmmaker's handheld, consumer Dv camera (shot by the director's brother). The camera naturally becomes a spiritual and physical collaborator and cohort in the children's free-wheeling bohemian existence. They steal food and clown and play—not at being a real family, but at playing at being a family (or an enclave or a utopia).

Somehow the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center seems like the last place you'd expect to see the Rutger Hauer thriller "Hobo With a Shotgun" blasting through, but it's a fitting way to introduce this year's Film Comment Selects series, which begins tonight in New York with both guns a blazin' and runs through March 4th.
As Nick Pinkerton noted in the Village Voice this week, there's "a downright dedication to evil" with this year's selections, which include the enjoyably excruciating Korean revenge thriller "I Saw the Devil" and the soon-to-play-sxsw return of "Saw" director James Wan's "Insidious." And yet there's so much goodwill on display since many of the films gracing the Film Society of Lincoln Center's screens are without American distribution and may prove to be hard to see in the future.

Federico Veiroj’s wonderfully trim and sensitive record of working at a place—and that place happens to be a cinema—is another elegiac entry in a micro-genre being slowly carved out by such filmmakers as Tsai Ming-liang (Goodbye, Dragon Inn) and Lisandro Alonso (Fantomas) which explore the soon-to-be-abandoned spaces that will soon be inhabited only by the ghosts of cinema. Rome -- The World Premiere of Christopher Honore's "Man at Bath", and the international premieres of "Karamay," a 356-minute political documentary from Chinese director Xu Xin and Aaron Katz's mystery story "Cold Weather" will be among the highlights of the 20-film main competition at the 63rd edition of the Locarno Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Wednesday's announcement also revealed the lineup for the festival's famous Piazza Grande venue, which will include the European premiere of Jay and Mark Duplass' comedy "Cyrus" -- John C. Reilly, the film's star, will be on hand to receive a special tribute -- Gareth Edwards' science fiction drama "Monsters," and "Gadkii Utenok" (The Ugly Duckling) from first-time Russian director Garri Bardine.

Brian Cox stars as Jacques, the curmudgeonly owner of a gritty New York dive bar that serves as home to a motley assortment of professional drinkers. Jacques is determinedly drinking and smoking himself to death when he meets Lucas (Paul Dano), a homeless young man who has already given up on life.
In the hopes of keeping his legacy alive, Jacques deems Lucas is a fitting heir and takes him under his wing, schooling him in the male—centric laws of his alcoholic clubhouse: no new customers, no fraternizing with customers and, absolutely no women. Lucas is a quick study, but their friendship is put to the test when the distraught and beautiful April (Isild Le Besco) shows up at the bar seeking shelter, and Lucas insists they help her out.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.
