Stand back, Marvel Cinematic Universe. Be gone, DC Extended Universe. The power of The Conjuring Universe compels you!
It may astonish those who aren't horror fans or haven't been paying attention, but 2013's "The Conjuring" has not only spawned two direct sequels, but two entire spin-off film franchises that are still going strong: the "Annabelle" series and "The Nun" films. In fact, the latter's latest installment — oh-so-helpfully entitled "The Nun II" — is due to haunt theaters everywhere on September 8, 2023.
If you can't quite recall where and when we last saw the only married demonologist team in the tri-county area, Ed and Lorraine Warren, or if you're having trouble separating your La Lloronas from your Valaks, fear not! The following will not only get you up to speed with the ghouls, demons, and ghosts of The Conjuring Universe, but it will also lay out the tangled timeline of the entire series in chronological order.

The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

Originally released in theaters back in 2017, Wish Upon stars The Conjuring‘s Joey King who plays a 16-year-old misfit who finds a magic box that promises a chance at the life she’s always wanted — only to discover that each wish demands a deadly payment.
Now, the film from John Leonetti, the director of Annabelle, is streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
“In the horror thriller, 17-year-old Clare Shannon (Joey King) is barely surviving the hell that is high school, along with her friends Meredith (Sydney Park) and June (Shannon Purser). So when her dad (Ryan Phillippe) gifts her an old music box with an inscription that promises to grant the owner’s wishes, she thinks there is nothing to lose. Clare makes her first wish and, to her surprise, it comes true. Before long, she finally has it all: money, popularity and her dream boy. Everything seems perfect – until...

‘We Might Hurt Each Other’ – ‘Friday the 13th’-Inspired Slasher Hits Screambox *Tomorrow*! [Trailer]
Straight out of the Chattanooga premiere, Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s throwback slasher We Might Hurt Each Other (formerly Pensive) arrives on our Screambox streaming platform tomorrow!
The bloody Lithuanian teen horror was directed by Jonas Trukanas and stars Gabija Bargailaite (Pilgrims) and calls back to slasher classics like Friday the 13th.
Inspired by local legends, Pensive follows a group of privileged high school classmates. After these classmates destroy a set of life-size wooden statues during a wild graduation party, a mysterious masked killer begins picking the group off one by one.
Gory and glorious, Pensive is a gritty throwback to the 80s and the heyday of slasher cinema. Calling back to Friday the 13th, the filmmakers took what was great about the era and give it a refreshing lift with the infusion of Eastern European folklore. Check out the trailer below.
Other July highlights include The Exorcist writer William Peter Blatty...

Hey Netflix lovers, I’m generally not the sort of person who likes to say, “I told you so,” but…
I told you so.
Wednesday, I posted a column noting how Netflix’s descriptors — the one- or two-sentence blurbs that are supposed to help subscribers decide whether or not they might want to watch a particular piece of entertainment — have lately become something considerably less than descriptive.
I complained about how they no longer revealed much of anything that was all that useful in deciding whether to hit play on a specific movie or show — you know, like, maybe something about the plot — but instead lamely just listed the actors and director.
Like, for example, a film called “The Silence,” which is described thus: “This 2019 horror film featuring Stanley Tucci and...

The newest member in the killer doll pantheon, M3GAN is currently slaying at the box office, with a sequel already in early development at this time. Of course, killer dolls and toys are a subgenre in and of themselves in horror, and no face shines brighter than that of Chucky.
With M3GAN now providing Chucky with some excellent company on the Killer Doll Mount Rushmore, I think the time has come to give the oft dismissed third entry in the still ongoing Child’s Play franchise a reassessment – the Jack Bender-directed Child’s Play 3.
Long considered the black sheep of the franchise, it’s not particularly easy to find many champions of Chucky’s third outing. Creator, writer, and ongoing franchise shepherd Don Mancini has even voiced his disappointment in his own writing on the film. On top of that, the box office take was underwhelming, and fans are...

As the film opens the couple gets a package of baby things from Rachel’s mother. They belonged to Rachel’s sister Vivian who lost both her baby and her husband under strange circumstances. Why her mother would send them and why they would actually use them is one of life’s great mysteries.

"She's strong… but she's not as strong as faith." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Lullaby, directed by the Dp / filmmaker John R. Leonetti - who doesn't exactly have the most impressive filmography. Landing in theaters in just a few weeks. A new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith — from the Hebrew phrase "Lilith-Abi" which translates to "Lilith, begone." Lullaby stars Oona Chaplin, with Rámon Rodríguez, Liane Balaban, Kira Guloien, and Moni Ogunsuyi. This looks like a mostly derivative, generic horror without anything new to offer us. I feel like some of these exact shots have been in other films before this. It still might have a few good scares? ›››

Back in February of 2020, right before the world shut down for a while, it was announced that John R. Leonetti, director of the horror films Annabelle, Wolves at the Door, Wish Upon, and The Silence, had signed on to direct the folklore-inspired horror movie Lullaby for Alcon Entertainment, with Game of Thrones‘ Oona Chaplin attached to star. Lullaby has since made its way through production and is now ready to be released. Deadline reports that Vertical Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights and will be giving Lullaby a theatrical and VOD release on December 16th.
Scripted by Alex Greenfield and Ben Powell, Lullaby centers on a new mother who discovers a lullaby in an ancient book and soon regards the song as a blessing. But her world transforms into a nightmare when the lullaby brings forth the ancient demon Lilith.

Zoinks! It looks like the Conjuring-verse is rearing back into action, because The Hollywood Reporter revealed that "The Conjuring 4" is officially in the works over at New Line Cinema. It will be written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who wrote the last two entries in the mainline series as well as the upcoming "Aquaman and the Lost City." Needless to say, he's helped guide the "Conjuring" franchise to the comfortably profitable series it's become since 2013.
The exact plot for this new installment is being kept under wraps, but we can safely assume that it will follow the franchise formula fans have come to expect. A lot can be said about the real-life duo of alleged paranormal investigators, but we can't help but be pulled into the wacky hijinks of this franchise's versions of Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Wilson (Vera Farmiga). Sure, the entire franchise might not always be of the best quality,...

One of the hotly debated topics in horror movie history is who exactly directed the 1982 film, "Poltergeist" about a suburban family who moves in to a house that is very much haunted. Official records credit Tobe Hooper as the director in question, but there are those who believe it was really Steven Spielberg who called all the shots on set.
Hooper is perhaps best known for his twisted, low-budget 1974 film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" about a deranged family who captures and murders a group of unsuspecting travelers after they run out of gas for their van. Spielberg, on the other hand, made a name for himself making slightly less disturbing blockbusters that were fun for the whole family. "Poltergeist" is based on a story written by Spielberg (who also helped write the script), and Spielberg was a producer for the film. However, because he was beginning work on his next big movie,...

"Poltergeist" is a cinematic Rorschach test. Which scene was scarier, the maggoty meat or the evil clown doll? What does the film say about the values of 1980s American suburbia? Most importantly of all, did Tobe Hooper direct the film, or did producer Steven Spielberg do it on the sly? Director Mick Garris insists it was Hooper, but "Poltergeist" camera assistant John R. Leonetti says Spielberg. Film critic Scout Tafoya claims in "Cinemaphagy," his book covering Hooper's film career, that "Poltergeist" is Hooper's movie but has some distinctly Speilbergian touches.
There is another "Poltergeist" that never quite came into being. Early in the film's production, Spielberg decided that he needed help writing the script. In search of a horror expert, he turned to Stephen King, whose works at the time were tearing up the country's bestseller charts. King was away at the time, and by the time he returned, Spielberg had moved on.

Ramón Rodríguez is set as the lead role of ABC’s drama pilot Will Trent, which now has been officially cleared for production. He also will be a producer on the project, from 20th Television.
While this is the last lead of a 2022 broadcast drama pilot to close, Rodríguez was approached just a couple of weeks after it had received a cast-contingent pilot order in early February. Trent’s casting, which comes after lengthy negotiations, removes that contingency.
Rodríguez most recently starred opposite Aubrey Plaza and served as producer on the Hulu pilot Olga Dies Dreaming, which is not going forward.

In Will Trent, written by Liz Heldens and Dan Thomsen based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling book series, Special Agent Will Trent (Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system.

The Mortal Kombat reboot movie from Warner Bros. has been a longtime coming. In fact, a fresh start for the film franchise has been in the works since at least 2010 when director Kevin Tancharoen pitched a movie called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth to Warner Bros. That project ended up in development hell, and it was Aquaman director James Wan who next picked up the torch in 2015 as producer, with newcomer Simon McQuoid directing from a script penned by Greg Russo. This is the reboot that you’ll finally get to see on HBO Max on April 16.
Ahead of the movie’s release, WB has dropped the first trailer for this decidedly more grown-up big-screen take on the beloved video game series. Delivering all of the blood and guts you’d expect from a modern, grittier Mortal Kombat adaptation, the trailer explains the gruesome reason why Jax ended up with his bionic metal arms,...

The extended Conjuring universe is arguably the biggest brand in horror right now, with the succession of sequels and spinoffs bringing in huge box office numbers and so far largely avoiding the law of diminishing returns that plagues the majority of the genre’s other long-running brands.
To date, the seven installments have raked in over $1.9 billion at the box office on combined production costs of less than $140 million, which also makes it one of the most profitable enterprises in the entire industry. And when The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It arrives next year after being delayed, takings are guaranteed to soar past the two billion dollar mark.
The first spinoff out of the gate was Annabelle, putting The Conjuring‘s creepy doll front and center. It may have earned $172 million globally, but the critical reaction was less than enthusiastic. As a result, journeyman director John R. Leonetti...

The Raid's Joe Taslim will play Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat reboot. We expect chilling developments to follow.
Everyone’s favorite ice ninja just got a little frostier in New Line’s Mortal Kombat reboot. Indeed, Warner Bros./New Line Cinema announced Tuesday that The Raid alum Joe Taslim has been cast as the blue-shaded ninja from the popular fighting game franchise in a new live-action reboot. The film, which is scheduled for a 2021 release date, is the latest Hollywood attempt at bringing the story of magical combat against inter-dimensional beings to the screen. The film stars Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto to name a few, as a family fighting a monstrous newly emerged enemy and to add insult to injury mysterious religious cult. If you’ve seen Bird Box or A Quiet Place you’ve already had the pleasure – or displeasure depending on your disposition – of seeing this underwhelming semi-horror protocol. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka impresses in a film that has little bite or intrigue, with very little emotional engagement or even horror elements for that matter.

"Entire regions of the country are being wiped off the map." The apocalypse comes in the form of bat-like creatures that hunt by sound in the trailer for the new movie The Silence, coming to Netflix on April 10th.
Although featuring an apocalyptic, sound-based concept similar to 2018's A Quiet Place, The Silence is actually based on Tim Lebbon's 2015 novel of the same name.
Directed by John R. Leonetti (Annabelle) and written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke (based on Lebbon's novel), The Silence stars Stanley Tucci, John Corbett, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto.
Synopsis: "When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, 16-year old Ally Andrews (Kiernan Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, and her family seek refuge in a remote haven. But they discover a sinister cult who are eager to exploit Ally’s heightened senses.

There are a lot of amazing horror movies coming to Netflix in April, but the one we're most excited about is The Silence.
The streaming platform's latest original film is directed by Annabelle's John R. The movie is actually based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by writer Tim Lebbon, which came out in 2015. ‘The Silence’ Trailer: Flying Monsters Are Hunting Kiernan Shipka and Stanley Tucci by Sound — Watch
“The Silence” is capitalizing on the latest trend for post-apocalyptic stories with creatures that prey on humans by curtailing basic functions. First there was “A Quiet Place,” in which John Krasinski and Emily Blunt had to evade blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. Then came the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” where Sandra Bullock had to blindfold herself so that she could avoid looking at creatures with the ability to drive a person to suicide.
Now, Netflix is combining all of these elements and throwing in some of its go-to stars for an extra synergistic push. In the movie, flying critters who kind of look like bats have destroyed the world by going after humans if they make any sound. That’s a familiar premise! The film also pulls from its Netflix stable of stars, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actors Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto and “To...

Netflix movie The Silence showcases a family’s struggle to survive in a world overrun by carnivorous bats.
The Silence may be coming to the Netflix table with a horror premise that’s likely to evoke accusations of derivativeness, since it appears to be amalgam of two recent genre successes in A Quiet Place and Bird Box. However, the film has a bit of an alibi, since it’s based on the acclaimed 2015 novel of the same name by British horror novelist Tim Lebbon; meaning that, in the very least, its story pre-dates the zeitgeist explosion of those two films.
Regardless, The Silence showcases the ordeal of a family struggling to survive the onset of an apocalypse scenario in which the world is under attack by bat creatures; a survival scenario that – due to the sensitive, sonar-based hearing of bats – necessitates silence at all times, lest one...

"We can't trust anyone now." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a horror thriller titled The Silence, from filmmaker John R. Leonetti (Annabelle). Although the description for this sounds a lot like A Quiet Place, the novel it's based on was actually written years before that movie was made. The Silence tells the story of a family struggling to survive in a world terrorized by a deadly, primeval species of bat, hunting only with their acute hearing. As the family seeks refuge in a remote haven where they can wait out the invasion, they start to wonder what kind of world will remain when they're ready to emerge. Starring Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka, Miranda Otto, John Corbett, Kate Trotter, and Kyle Breitkopf. This looks way more intense and horrifying than A Quiet Place, with a much scarier apocalyptic feel. Those darn crazy bats. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for John R.

Come April, Netflix will be seeing the arrival of a generous array of horror movies and shows, from major franchise entries to brand new releases, and most of them are set to drop on the first day of the month.
Out of the seven horror and semi-horror films that are being made available on April 1st, the most renowned by a country mile is Deliverance, John Boorman’s classic 1972 back-country thriller starring Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds. Meanwhile, in a slasher vein, we have the Voorhees double bill that is 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot. But if Leatherface is your killer of choice, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D will be streaming on the platform as well.
On top of that, you’ve got the Will Smith-led I Am Legend, 1999’s The Bone Collector, and if you really want to stretch the definition of a horror movie,...

Movies New to Netflix in April: ‘Burning,’ ‘American Honey,’ and Extended Version of ‘Hateful Eight’
Netflix might be skipping this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but the streaming giant is offering a bit of a mea culpa in its April offerings, which come with some exciting options from bonafide auteurs who also happen to be Cannes regulars, including Lee Chang-Dong, Andrea Arnold, and Quentin Tarantino. Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner “I, Daniel Blake” will also join Netflix’s ranks next month, along with classics like “All the President’s Men,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” and “Deliverance.”
In April, Netflix will add Lee’s lauded Cannes competitor “Burning,” which missed out on Oscar love but picked up plenty of other accolades during last year’s awards circuit, including a number of nods for star Steven Yeun. It will be joined by Arnold’s 2016 Palme d’Or entry “American Honey,” along with an extended version of Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”.
