Editor’s note: Following the publishing of our review, we received word from Brenden Dawes, who developed the generative system used by the filmmakers of Eno, that while the film teases the possibilities of AI and generative technology in an art practice, the film itself consists entirely of filmed new and archival materials with no AI-generated content.
A film of infinite possibilities thanks in part to a generative AI hook, Gary Hustwit’s Eno is partially a straightforward biopic featuring interviews and archival footage with composer Brian Eno, the experiential musician and artist whose credits include playing the synthesizer in Roxy Music to creating the start-up sound for Windows PCs. The film is assembled at random, with a set beginning and ending, inspired seemingly by a deck of “Oblique Strategies” cards that Eno and David Bowie used to create tension and contractions within their collaborations.

On paper, the prominent use of sensitive American singer-songwriter music from the 1970s and ‘80s in a modern Norwegian romantic comedy might seem rather incongruous, if not downright anachronistic. But five decades on from some of their biggest successes, Art Garfunkel, Todd Rundgren, Harry Nilsson and Christopher Cross are back on the big screen helping soundtrack Danish/Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s acclaimed “The Worst Person in the World,” which is nominated for best original screenplay and best international feature film at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Co-written by Trier and longtime collaborator Eskil Vogt, “Worst Person” has already won best foreign language film from the New York Film Critics Circle and garnered Renate Reinsve the best actress award at Cannes. The movie follows Reinsve’s Julie as she navigates the restless transition from her 20s into her 30s, spanning two long-term relationships that conjure tough existential questions about love, fidelity,...

After only two features, Reprise (2006) and Oslo, August 31st (2011), Norwegian director (by way of Denmark) Joachim Trier has not only reached the competition in the Festival de Cannes with his latest movie, Louder than Bombs, he has also crossed the Atlantic to make a film in American with an international cast. The story of the emotional and familial fall-out after the death a famed war photographer (Isabelle Huppert) on her husband (Gabriel Byrne), eldest son (Jesse Eisenberg) and high school-aged youngest son (Devin Druid), the film fragments its psychological melodrama across differing timelines and characters. After the premiere of Joachim Trier's film in Cannes, I was able to participate in a roundtable conversation with the director.Question: How did you arrive on the varied style of this film?Joachim Trier: My co-screenwriter Eskil Vogt and I would talk of ideas. For example, an idea we wanted to do conceptually for a scene,...
