Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Michel Franco’s Memory, the thoughtful drama that won Peter Sarsgaard the Best Actor Volpi Cup in Venice earlier this year. Franco directs and wrote the movie that also stars Jessica Chastain.
The latter plays Sylvia, a social worker who leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. This is blown open when Saul (Sarsgaard), who suffers from bouts of dementia, follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.
In Venice, Franco told the press corps, “My biggest fear is losing my mind, which is what brought me to (the subject of) dementia. If you don’t know who you are, are you still yourself? It triggers many questions for a scriptwriter.”

Jessica Chastain plays a social worker and single mother whose structured life is thrown into chaos when a young man dealing with dementia, played by Peter Sarsgaard, follows her home from their high school reunion in the trailer for Memory, which dropped Tuesday.
Michel Franco’s austere family drama about trauma and connection has Chastain playing Sylvia. Her regimented days at first revolve around her daughter, her job and her AA meetings, but are disrupted when the surprise encounter with Saul (Sarsgaard) opens a door to past memories and childhood experiences that surface like raw nerves.
“Why did you follow me home from the party? Or do you only remember when it’s convenient,” an irritated Sylvia asks Saul at one point in the trailer, only to be frustratingly told he doesn’t remember. Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to “His Three Daughters,” starring Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Netflix had no comment on terms of the deal, which is reported to be for just under $7 million.
Written, directed and edited by Azazel Jacobs, the film presents a tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics with Lyonne, Olsen and Coon starring as sisters who converge after their father’s health declines.
In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the drama as “funny, moving and true,” with its trio of lead actors delivering “superb” performances that “work together like a piece of chamber music.”
He wrote: “The film is a finely observed, winningly unsentimental memory play about three adult sisters who have come together to take care of their father, who is dying of cancer and approaching his final days.

Netflix has acquired Azazel Jacobs’ sisterhood drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne and bowed at the Toronto Film Festival.
The trio play estranged sisters forced to reunite when their father becomes seriously ill. The family drama sees the sisters converge as their father’s health steadily declines.
The deal, with a price tag north of $6 million, according to sources, represents Netflix’s third acquisition out of Toronto after the streaming giant picked up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, for around $11 million after a world premiere at the festival. Netflix also nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after it was presented as a work-in-progress screening at TIFF.
After Toronto Netflix also paid around $20 million for the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which bowed in Venice and stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. A new documentary about Richard Williams, the father of tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams, has sold into major markets.
“On the Line: The Richard Williams Story,” which had its U.K. premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest in June, has been sold into Sky (U.K. and Italy), Canal+ (France), Mnet (South Africa), Paramount+ (Australia) and Tvnz (New Zealand).
The film paints a complex portrait of the life, career and impact of Williams — the family patriarch and tennis coach to Venus and Serena Williams, who was also portrayed by Will Smith in the 2022 movie “King Richard.”
In the documentary, Williams provides rare home video footage and candid interviews to detail the family’s unprecedented gate-crashing in the 1990s of a predominately white, upper-class sport.
