A ruby-and-diamond bracelet that legendary star Marlene Dietrich commissioned from Van Cleef & Arpels in 1937 and wore to the Academy Awards in 1951 is headed to the auction block. It will be offered as part of Christie’s upcoming June 7 sale in New York, titled “The Magnificent Jewels of Anne Eisenhower.”
Interior designer and jewelry collector Anne Eisenhower.
Eisenhower — an interior designer who died last year and was a granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower — was also privately a collector of many pieces of exceptional jewelry, from a Panthère de Cartier brooch to a Tiffany and Co. Art Deco diamond bracelet on which a rose is depicted by rubies and emeralds. Both are included in the auction, which has a total of 31 lots.
But it’s Dietrich’s bracelet, which Eisenhower anonymously purchased at auction in 1992, that is the undisputed star of the sale as well as the lot with the highest estimate — $2.5 million to $4.5 million.

German-Turkish director Fatih Akin is attending the Red Sea Film Festival for the screening of “Rhinegold,” about young Iranian-Kurdish immigrant Giwar Hajabi, also known as Xatar, who is one of Germany’s most successful rap stars.
The pic was released in Germany on Oct. 27 and has grossed over 10 million, becoming Akin’s biggest hit to date.
As in many of Akin’s previous features, “Rhinegold” explores the energy released by the encounter between Middle Eastern and European culture.
The pic begins with Xatar’s musician parents escaping from Tehran during the 1979 Iranian revolution and includes scenes in Iraq, prior to the family’s departure to Europe and Xatar’s subsequent imprisonment in 2010 in a Syrian jail. Although much of the film takes place in the streets of Europe, the Middle East is a core element of its visceral energy.

Diane Kruger will partner with French pay-tv leader Canal+ to star in an hour-long documentary retracing the life and career of Romy Schneider, with production set to begin next week.
Produced by Canal+ Docs and directed by Marjory Déjardin, the film is part of a larger series called “Elle parle d’Elle” (She Talks About Her), which centers on contemporary stars as they explore the lives of 20th century icons, creating echoes between the two subjects. Previous installments found Carole Bouquet retracing the steps of Coco Chanel, for example.
“[Romy Schneider] really was the reason I wanted to become an actor and to study acting in France,” Kruger tells Variety from the Marrakech Film Festival. “There’s sort of a parallel drawn to my own life and where I’m from, so that should be interesting.”

The first season of Liz Feldman's "Dead to Me," a darkly funny wine-mom sunshine noir, was a real gem. It felt like it came out of nowhere, and it hooked you from the jump. The series had a big trick up its sleeve: in addition to likable, wine-chugging, foul-mouthed leads, practically every episode ended with a shocking twist or cliffhanger, ensuring that viewers would have no choice to binge. In short, I loved it. And I enjoyed season 2 as well, although there was a noticeable drop in quality (it happens). After a hiatus due to both the Covid-19 pandemic and star Christina Applegate's multiple sclerosis diagnosis, the series returns for its third and final season, and I won't lie: I was excited for one last ride.
So it brings me no pleasure to say the show goes out with a whimper rather than a bang. Perhaps it's due to...

It’s been two-and-a-half years since the second season of “Dead to Me” dropped on Netflix, and since it was in the middle of 2020, it seems like even longer.
With the third and final season of Liz Feldman’s dark comedy, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, dropping on Nov. 17, Variety is sharing a quick refresher on the biggest things that occurred during the first two seasons.
Judy (Cardellini) and Jen (Applegate) have been partners in crime, quite literally, for some time now. The duo first met in a grief support group after the death of Jen’s husband, Ted. Judy begins helping her take care of her sons, Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and Henry (Luke Roessler), and becomes part of her family. Eventually, Jen finds out that Judy and her estranged husband, Steve (James Marsden), were the ones responsible for Ted’s death: Judy was driving the car and Steve...

It’s been almost three years since Netflix’s twisted, soapy dramedy about grief, friendship, and concealing murder last aired — so where exactly did we leave off on “Dead to Me?” It’s easier to remember a show once it’s back on our screens, but Liz Feldman’s series is known for throwing viewers into the deep end.
Here’s a quick refresher on “Dead to Me” Seasons 1 and 2, ahead of Season 3’s November 17 premiere.
Jen and Judy
Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) met at a grief support group in the show’s premiere episode. Jen was mourning her husband Ted, who died in a hit and run, and Judy because her fiancee is “gone” and, it turns out, she experienced multiple miscarriages. Grief, anger, and insomnia bond these two women instantly, and they’ve remained comrades and confidantes through some truly insane circumstances.
The Men
Jen’s marriage wasn’t perfect.

Exclusive: Garret Dillahunt (Sprung) has joined the third and final season of Netflix’s acclaimed dark comedy series Dead to Me, debuting on the platform on November 17, as a recurring guest star.
With its first season in 2019, Dead to Me introduced viewers to the recently widowed Laguna Beach real estate agent Jen (Christina Applegate) as well as Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini), a free spirit with a shocking secret who came to befriend her via a support group. By the end of the show’s first run (*Spoilers ahead*), we learned that it was Judy who killed Jen’s husband Ted in a hit-and-run, with Jen later killing Judy’s ex-fiancé, Steve (James Marsden). It seemed near the end of Season 2 that Jen and Judy’s concerns as to the consequences of their crimes might soon be put to rest, given Detective Perez’s (Diana-Maria Riva) decision to take pity on them.

Fatih Akin’s Marlene Dietrich Miniseries Starring Diane Kruger Goes into Production With UFA Fiction
Fatih Akin has teamed up with Berlin-based UFA Fiction on his miniseries about German star Marlene Dietrich, starring Diane Kruger.
Based on the biography “My Mother Marlene,” by Dietrich’s daughter, Maria Riva, the five-part series, tentatively titled “Marlene,” is produced by UFA Fiction and Akin’s Bombero International in Hamburg.
Currently in production, the miniseries chronicles Dietrich’s life as an artist, lover, German emigrant and mother as well as a woman who created her own rules and lived by them, whatever the cost.
“‘Marlene’ will be not only the first series I have written and directed but also the greatest challenge in my film career,” said Akin, the series’ creator.
“It is the continuation of my successful collaboration with Diane Kruger. Nobody is better cast than her. Marlene was not only a cinematic icon, but a woman in exile, German immigrant in America, resistance fighter and so much more.

Production designer J. Michael Riva, whose most recent work includes Quentin Tarantino’s currently filming Django Unchained and Sony’s franchise reboot The Amazing Spider-Man, has died. Riva was 63, and the circumstances and cause of death were not known but Deadline was able to confirm his passing. Very highly regarded in the industry, he was the son of actress-author Maria Riva and art director William Riva and the grandson of Marlene Dietrich and film editor Rudolph Sieber. Raised in New York City, he eventually found his way to Los Angeles. Dropping out of UCLA to pursue a career in production design, Riva apprenticed with Jackson DeGoiva and his first major movie was uncredited work with Toby Rafelson on I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (1977). That led to Brubaker (1980) with Robert Redford and subsequently Redford hired him for Ordinary People (1980). Other work included the 1984 cult fave The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension...

Hollywood is a place for divas and too often the little guys go unnoticed. Not so the prdocuction designer J Michael Riva, whose spectacularly imaginative work on films like The Goonies was eclipsed only be the elegance of his contributions to the likes of The Color Purple, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. Riva had been part of the team working on Quentin arantino project Django Unchained, but he passed away last night at the age of 63.
Son of Maria Riva and grandson of Marlene Dietrich, Riva was perhaps always destibed to go into film work. He will be remembered for his stylish contributions to the likes of the Lethal Weapon and Iron Man films, as well as cult favourite The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension. Marlene Dietrich is Turner Classic Movies last "Summer Under the Stars" star of 2011. Today, TCM is showing 12 Marlene Dietrich movies, in addition to J. David Riva's 2001 documentary Marlene Dietrich: Her Own Song. Riva, I should add, is the son of Maria Riva and Dietrich's grandson. [Marlene Dietrich Movie Schedule.] Unfortunately, TCM isn't presenting any Marlene Dietrich movie premieres today. In other words, no Dietrich opposite David Bowie in Just a Gigolo, or Dietrich next to Jean Gabin in Martin Roumagnac / The Room Upstairs, or any of Dietrich's little-known German-made silents, e.g., Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame / I Kiss Your Hand, Madame; Das Schiff der verlorenen Menschen / The Ship of Lost Men; and Gefahren der Brautzeit / Dangers of the Engagement. None of the silents are exactly what I'd call good movies — nor is Just a Gigolo — but they all are worth a look if only because Dietrich is in them. Another option for...

Dear Gwyneth Paltrow:
You were really cute on Glee. You made me forget that I think you’re sometimes slightly smug and a wee bit wan. As Holly Holliday, you were positively delightful. But please don’t push it. I mean it, watch yourself. Don’t go doing something stupid like playing the iconic, inimitable Marlene Dietrich. Oh, crap, you are thinking of doing something stupid exactly like that? Are you mad, woman?
Just because you own a shiny gold guy named Oscar doesn’t mean you can be Dietrich. No one can be Dietrich but Dietrich. Those smoldering eyes, that smoky voice. Sweet fancy Moses (and Apple – seriously, who names her children that?), the tuxedoes. Ok, Ok, I’m going to compose myself and try to think rationally about why you would make this sort of career choice and try to play one of the most famous, most...

On the surface at least, Gwyneth Paltrow seems a weak choice to portray legendary sex symbol, exotic actress and husky-voiced singer Marlene Dietrich in an ambitious 180 minute made for t.v. biopic.
Paltrow, a solid mid-level actress who is sleight-figured with a squeaky clean image, more likeable than sexy, never portraying a cent of a darker side beyond those eyes like Dietrich (the above left shot of Paltrow in the period film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is her attempt at looking thoughtful), should stay well clear.
Eva Green would be a better choice or better yet, and perish to even consider the thought, perhaps a German actress to portray a German icon?
Luc Besson’s Europacorp TV, BBC and HBO then are joining forces for the mammoth, 180 minute biopic of the legendary German actress and performer. Titled Marlene, the t.v. film will be told in two...

After a disappointing debut last spring and a lackluster summer run, many were surprised that Fox kept The Good Guys on the fall schedule. In hindsight, Fox execs may be wondering why they did as well.
The Good Guys is an action comedy that pairs a washed-up, old-school cop (Bradley Whitford) with a young, by-the-book detective (Colin Hanks). Others in the series include Jenny Wade, Diana-Maria Riva, Jennifer Besser, Kimberly Lynn Campbell, Kennith Edwards, Nathan Fane, and Arthur Wooldridge.
The May premiere attracted a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.93 million viewers. That put the TV show's debut in fourth place in total viewership and tied for third in the coveted demographic with NBC's Minute to Win It. Not a good start.

That way, you get to read our recommendations of what to watch and what to avoid and still have time to read the millions of Twitter messages you've got with a link to that video of the British weather forecaster flicking the bird at a news reader.
Do tell us what you think (of the reviews, not the forecaster). We will continue to bring you long-form reviews of selected releases (the upcoming Alien Anthology, for instance), but expect to see more like these...

In May, Fox debuted their new action-comedy, The Good Guys. The cop show stars Bradley Whitford, Colin Hanks, Diana-Maria Riva, and Jenny Wade.
The network had so much faith in the show that they ordered seven additional episodes before the series even premiered and also gave it a slot on the fall schedule. Unfortunately, the TV show hasn't caught on and looks to have a real uphill battle if The Good Guys is going to survive long enough to be renewed for season two.
Fox recently decided to pull the show from the summer schedule a little early but is still slated to air on Friday nights this fall.
As a result of the show's rating challenges, The Good Guys is undergoing some adjustments. According to Deadline, Fox wants to focus on attracting more young female viewers.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Marlene Dietrich... I won't say that it's the most ridiculous notion I ever heard. There are lots of casting choices to top it -- like, say, Queen Latifah or Steve Buscemi. But still. Is it, in any worthy way, possible? Ms. Paltrow would have to pull off one killer transformation of Val Kilmer/Jim Morrison proportions to embody the iconic, ninth greatest female star of all time.
According to WENN, Paltrow is going to play the actress in a BBC drama based on the 1992 biography Marlene Dietrich, written by her daughter, Maria Riva (and adapted by scribe Andrew Davies). There's certainly much to work with, from her start in Berlin, to her move to the American screen, to her bisexuality and famous loves like Frank Sinatra, and finally, to Dietrich's staunchly guarded reclusion at the end of her life.

Gwyneth Paltrow is set to embrace the golden age of Hollywood in her next movie - the star has reportedly signed up to play screen legend Marlene Dietrich.
The Iron Man star has been linked to the lead role in a BBC drama based on the life of the German actress, who died in 1992.
Dietrich's personal life was just as colourful as her high profile film roles - she was bisexual and allegedly battled a dependency on drink and drugs throughout her career. She was also rumoured have enjoyed a string of love affairs with stars including Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner and John Wayne.
Scriptwriter Andrew Davies has based the film on a 1992 biography of Dietrich by the actress' daughter Maria Riva.

The following is a list of accredited, degree-granting acting programs at colleges and universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. It includes schools that grant either a degree in acting or a degree in another major that has an acting component or concentration. It does not include programs in directing, playwriting, design, or other specialized fields. For programs in dance, see the list that follows this one. Both lists are in the process of undergoing major revisions; therefore, not all information is complete for all schools.Undergraduate programs are listed first, followed by graduate programs, each divided by state. In general, B.A. and M.A. programs are more academic in nature (though they may offer a performance component or concentration), while B.F.A. and M.F.A. programs focus on training professional performers. An A.A. is a two-year junior college degree. The list also includes...

Gwyneth Paltrow has regrets about signing up to play screen legend Marlene Dietrich in an upcoming biopic - because she'd much rather stay at home and raise her daughter Apple. Last month, the Oscar-winning actress delighted fans - and Dietrich's daughter Maria Riva - when she announced she would produce and star in the project. But since becoming a mother to her and husband Chris Martin's five-week- old daughter, Paltrow admits she'd quite happily stay away from the screen to tend to her child. She says, "(Dietrich) was an amazing woman who lived an incredible life, so it's definitely worth exploring to see if we can get the script right. But we'll see. I don't know if I ever will go back to work."...

"Marlene" is irresistible -- which does not mean the same thing as being a good movie. But then everything connected to its dazzling subject, the late Marlene Dietrich, has always come tinged with ambiguity and contradictions. Was Dietrich one of the 20th century's greatest stars? Or was she a creature manufactured with her willing but nearly unconscious participation?
"Marlene" is one of those grand, silly celebrity biopics with glamorous decadence, coy suggestions of scandal and a parade of waxworks historical figures. With a budget of DM17.8 million ($9.4 million), "Marlene" claims to be the most expensive Film Production in postwar Germany. But it has not been designed for trans-Atlantic travel.
Shot entirely in German -- ludicrously so in Hollywood sections where everyone from Latino servants to Gary Cooper speaks German -- "Marlene" will have little theatrical impact domestically beyond festival appearances such as the Hollywood Film Festival, where it made its U.S. debut last week. Its best bet is a pay TV slot.
Dietrich's legend rests largely on her last German film, "The Blue Angel" (1930), and her first six American films made at Paramount, all directed by Josef von Sternberg -- her mentor, Svengali and, for many, creator. Those deliciously artificial romances were cinematic essays in tormented love and frustrated passions. At their center was this new icon of sadomasochistic eroticism, who both celebrated and ridiculed her sexuality.
She made films before and since, but it was this image and look, taught to her by von Sternberg, that Dietrich spent her career re-creating.
"Marlene" is blessed with an actress, Katja Flint, who embodies a good deal of the glamour, mischievousness and consuming ambitions of the diva. Flint moves beyond impersonation to a true acting performance in which she creates not Marlene Dietrich but "Marlene Dietrich" -- a person quite comfortable with herself and her highly unorthodox life, a person who has traded happiness for fame and is in no way sorry for making the Faustian bargain.
What is missing is Dietrich's wit. For while the performer took her work seriously, she didn't always take herself seriously.
Based on a biography by her daughter, Maria Riva, "Marlene" covers the period from 1929 to the end of World War II. Key figures include her husband, Rudolf Sieber (Herbert Knaup), whom she seldom saw but never divorced; von Sternberg (Hans-Werner Meyer); young Maria (Josefina Vilsmaier, then others); her nanny and her dad's lover, Tamara (Christiane Paul); and a fictional figure, a Prussian officer named Carl (Heino Ferch), supposedly the great love of Dietrich's life. The latter character is not only superfluous but unfortunate in that it denies Dietrich's fierce independence from such emotional entanglements.
The movie's major failing comes in its depiction of the Dietrich/
von Sternberg relationship. Meyer struts and preens but projects none of the mad-dog charisma and arrogance of the great director. Dietrich's open marriage to Sieber is fleshed out more fully, though you never see how this arrangement affects the daughter.
Dietrich is depicted as addicted to sex, cigarettes, diets, sleeping pills and booze. She is both a hard-working hausfrau and a glamorous bisexual adored by many but understood by few.
If the film is never quite able to figure out whom the real Marlene Dietrich is, well, join the club. Nobody ever did.
