A week after being appointed culture minister and slammed by an avalanche of criticism, famed politician Rachida Dati has officially entered the ring.
Dati went off-script and delivered an unfiltered speech — starting with “I’m not asking you to love me, what I want is to convince you” — to a room full of film and TV players on Thursday evening during a ceremony honoring actor Melvil Poupaud, who received the French Cinema Award.
While on stage, Dati said she will strive to democratize culture during her tenure.
“Culture in schools and civic sense go hand-in-hand. When you look at schools in certain areas which are ridden with problems, you’ll notice that it’s often places where culture has taken a backseat,” she said. Dati also spoke about her own relationship with culture, admitting she saw a movie in a cinema for the first time at the age of 21 but...

Flanked on either side by members of the country’s political and cultural elite, actor Melvil Poupaud claimed the French Cinema Award at a ceremony held at France’s Ministry of Culture on Thursday.
Awarded by publicly-funded film promotional organization Unifrance, the French Cinema prize is meant to honor those filmmakers, actors and producers that have helped Gallic cinema resonate on the global stage. Previous winners include Virginie Efira, Juliette Binoche, and Olivier Assayas.
Reflecting on his four decades in front of the lens – a winding path that kicked off at age 10 with a key role in Raúl Ruiz’s 1983 fantasy “City of Pirates,” and has since paired the star with local auteurs Justine Triet, Arnaud Desplechin, and Francois Ozon, as well global standouts like James Ivory, Xavier Dolan and the Wachowskis – Poupaud spoke in earnest and self-effacing terms about his winding career.

New Delhi, Nov 26 (Ians) The horrifying incident of the 2008 Mumbai attacks which is well known as 26/11 was a tragic incident which has gone down in history as one of the worst and biggest terrorist attacks to ever take place.
It has been 15 years now, and while India is moving on from that nightmare it has left scars that have never fully healed. Carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists, the attacks went on for three days with the Taj Hotel, Oberoi Hotel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus being the biggest targets.
Over 175 people were killed in this attack and over 300 injured. Over the years many storytellers have presented the story of these attacks from different aspects. Some have presented the story from the victims’ point of view, some from the medical fraternity, the Nsg commandos to the planning of the attacks.

A romantic comedy about an Israeli-Palestinian couple based on the real life story of creators Nayef Hammoud and Gal Rosenbluth, the development series “Non-Issue” won the Paramount+ drama prize at this year’s Mia Market, which wrapped its ninth edition on an optimistic note. Of course, well before Friday’s closing award ceremony, the heartbreaking crisis in the Middle East cast a heavy pall over an otherwise ebullient audiovisual market, often informing conversations professional and otherwise.
While a number of industry execs were unable to travel from Israel, and though slated speaker Ari Folman was even forced to cancel a remote interview, attendance was otherwise up across the board. The Roman film and television market welcomed 2,600 industry participants – marking a 10% increase on last year’s record, and encompassing more than 65 countries.

Annie Silverstein’s feature debut “Bull” swept three awards at the 45th Deauville American Film Festival, including the Grand Prize, the Revelation Prize for best first film and the Critics’ Prize.
“Bull,” a portrait of a rebellious teenage girl from South Texas, world premiered at Cannes’s Un Certain Regard and marks Silverstein’s follow up to her short “Skunk” which won Cannes’s Cinéfondation prize in 2014. “Bull” is represented in international markets by Film Constellation, while 30West reps North American rights. “Bull” follows the relationship between a troubled adolescent from West of Houston whose mother is in jail and an ageing African American bullfighter.
The Jury prize, meanwhile, was shared between Michael Angelo Covino’s “The Climb,” and Robert Eggers “The Lighthouse,” a hallucinatory thriller starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Nate Parker’s politically charged drama “American Skin” is set to play at the 45th edition of the Deauville American Film Festival following its world premiere at Venice.
“American Skin,” which tells the story of a Gulf War veteran whose son is killed by a police officer, marks Parker’s first feature film since the news resurfaced that he had once been charged and acquitted of rape. His debut film, “The Birth of a Nation,” won a prize at Sundance in 2016 but flopped at the box office.
Parker directed and stars in “American Skin.” News of the film’s inclusion in Deauville’s lineup comes a day after it was revealed that “A Rainy Day in New York” by Woody Allen, who has also confronted allegations of sexual assault, would open the festival.

Who’s to blame for popularizing reenactments of real-life terrorist attacks? Should we point the finger at “United 93” director Paul Greengrass, or maybe Steven Spielberg’s morally gray “Munich” a year earlier? The entire genre traces back to Gillo Pontecorvo’s game-changing “The Battle of Algiers” in 1966, which challenged our ideas of on-screen realism by posing as a cinema vérité newsreel. Even so, such re-creations didn’t become chic until after 9/11, when action movies in which folks such as Sean Connery and Arnold Schwarzenegger saved the day from terrorist plots gave way to those in which successful attacks became the focus.
There’s little doubt that “Hotel Mumbai” director Anthony Maras has seen all these movies and then some, although what’s not so clear is why he felt compelled to tell the story of the 2008 Mumbai attacks — a series of 12 separate terror incidents that culminated in the bloody siege...

Rolling off “Versailles” and “Thanksgiving,” which is competing at Series Mania in Lille, Newen-owned Capa Drama is developing a raft of internationally-driven series with French and U.S. partners, including “The 10 O’Clock People” and “L’Infiltré.”
Headed by Claude Chelli, Capa Drama has partnered up with U.S. company Fabrik Entertainment to co-develop “The 10 O’Clock People,” a series adapted from a short novel by Stephen King which was published in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes collection. The story revolves around a Boston bank employee who discovers that many people, including some powerful ones, are inhuman monsters disguised as people. Pearson finds allies who, like him, have the ability to see these creatures through their disguises and forms a new resistance group. While at Series Mania Festival to present his mini-series “Thanksgiving” in competition, Nicolas Saada sat with Variety to discuss the spy drama which centers on the marriage between a Frenchman and American woman who are keeping secrets from each other.
Written by Saada and Anne-Louise Trividic, “Thanksgiving” was produced by Claude Chelli at Capa Drama, the thriving French banner behind “Versailles” and “Braquo,” for Franco-German network Arte. Newen Distribution is handling international sales on the series.
A former high-profile film critic, Saada previously wrote Frederic Jardin’s “Nuit Blanche,” which was remade into “Sleepless” with Jamie Foxx; and directed two films, “Spy(ies),” a London-set thriller with Guillaume Canet, and most recently “Taj Mahal,” a psychological thriller with Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac”) set against the backdrop of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack.

Wes Anderson is deep into production on his next feature, the new stop-motion Isle of Dogs, and while this extended animation process means we won’t see the results for at least another year-plus, it has also freed him up to other opportunities. Following a Christmas advert, he’s now participated in an extensive, one-hour masterclass while at Arte Cinema. With it being conducted by a pair of French speakers, the translation process means it might not be as smooth as other conversations he has taken part in, but it is certainly one of the most informative about his influences and his process.

Terrorism-themed films to hit French screens in coming days.
French distributor Bac Films has decided to push on with the scheduled release of Nicolas Saada’s Taj Mahal, about the 2008 Mumbai attacks, following a deadly extremist assault on Paris on Friday.
The film, based on the true story of an 18-year-old French girl caught up in the Nov 2008 siege of Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Hotel in which 164 people were killed, will be released on Dec 2.
“Bac has decided to maintain the theatrical release of Nicolas Saada’s Taj Mahal,” Paris-based Bac confirmed in a statement.
The decision came four days after a series of attacks across Paris on Friday night at the Bataclan concert hall, four restaurants and outside the Stade de France, in which 129 people were killed and 350 people injured, many of them severely.

Whenever tragedy strikes, dramatizations as such in the media aren't far behind —though it's taken a few years, the 2008 terror attacks on The Taj Hotel are getting retold on the big screen. Nicolas Saada unveiled his take on the story with “Taj Mahal” featuring "Nymphomaniac" star Stacy Martin this year on the festival circuit, but it didn't get a great reception (read our review). So "Macbeth" and "The Snowtown Murders" director Justin Kurzel may fare better when he takes on the same subject matter. Read More: Cannes Review: Justin Kurzel's 'Macbeth,' Starring Michael Fassbender & Marion Cotillard Deadline reports that Kurzel will helm an adaptation of Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott-Clark’s "The Siege: 68 Hours Inside The Taj Hotel." Anthony McCarten ("The Theory Of Everything") will pen the screenplay for the project, which the trade says will be along the lines of Paul Greengrass' "Captain...

Starting on November 26, 2008, ten men entered south Mumbai and began to lay siege to the city in a coordinated and highly deadly manner. The men attacked major attractions in the city, setting off bombs, and firing automatic weapons. All in all, the battle raged for three days, left 164 people dead, and many hundreds more injured. While many of those killed were foreigners, an entire city was caught in the grip of terror, and the victims encompassed a wide swath of backgrounds. Unfortunately, this broader scope is missing from Nicolas Saada’s new drama, “Taj Mahal.” In Saada’s film, westerner Louise (Stacy Martin) is trapped alone in her hotel room as her parents, who traveled with her to the country, fight to make it back to her. Of course, this is a valid, and surely life-altering tragedy, one that will haunt the family for years to come. But to exploit...

American in Peril: Dowdle Bros. Play on Base Fears with Survival Drama
It’s unfortunate so many superficial elements are working against the objective consideration of No Escape, beginning with its potentially problematic casting of an unwavering comic star as the lead in what promises to be a pulse-pounding thriller. Add to this a flurry of uneasy marketing elements, including dreadfully cheesy poster art, corny taglines, borrowing a title from a likeable 90’s sci-fi flick starring Ray Liotta, and the potential of this latest effort from the Dowdle Bros. (Quarantine; As Above, So Below) promises the making of an undeniable turkey.
Despite all of these unfavorable buzz-killing aspects, the film manages to be an unfathomable rarity in that it manages to overcome all of these red-flag detractions as an uncomfortably tense survival thriller.
Though not without a certain amount of quibbling in reference to its sometimes problematic ‘truths’, such as...

Back to back mid-summer Xmas mornings with the rollout of major premiere titles at Tiff and now the full line-up for Venice means we’re now carefully dissecting the numerous films announced with our first focus going down the list at the treasure trove of items in the Horizons Section, otherwise known as Orizzonti. Names that pop out of the group of eighteen include Danish helmer Tobias Lindholm‘s heavily anticipated third feature film, A War. Re-teaming with actor Pilou Asbæk in just as many outings, R (2010) and A Hijacking (2012) are part of his already stacked early filmography, this is about a solider stationed in Afghanistan and finds himself caught in a catch-22 type of situation.
Another highly anticipated film (our Nicholas Bell slotted it at #33) which posits a person in a life or death type of situation is Nicolas Saada‘s sophomore film. Based on true horrific events, set...

On the heels of yesterday's Toronto Film Festival announcement, this morning we get the lineup for the 2015 Venice Film Festival and, as always, there's a little crossover with some films set to premiere on the Lido ahead of their Toronto (and/or Telluride premieres). Some of the titles not screening at Toronto (at least not yet) that will premiere at Venice include Baltasar Kormakur's Everest, which is serving as the opening night film, Drake Doremus' Equals starring Kristen Stewart, A Bigger Splash from Luca Guadagnino, Go With Me directed by Daniel Alfredson, Dito Montiel's Man Down, Amy Berg's Janis as well as a new, 16-minute short film from Martin Scorsese titled The Audition and a Brian De Palma documentary directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. There's also buzz building for The Childhood of a Leader directed by Brady Corbet and starring Robert Pattinson and Berenice Bejo.

The Venice Film Festival has become one of the longest-running events on the festival circuit, its veteran status giving it a level of prestige that has only been heightened by the films that have screened at the event. Having first started in 1932, a number of movies that have gone on to be classics have won prizes at the festival, including Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Satyajit Ray’s Aparajito, and Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad. Interest in the festival’s lineup announcement has thus grown over the years, with many film fans curious to see what the organisers select to play at the event, due to its stature. The full lineup for the 2015 incarnation of the festival, the 72nd one in the festival’s history, has now been announced. The festival itself will run from September 2nd to the 12th, with a jury that includes Alfonso Cuarón, Nuri Bilge Ceylan,...

A cop’s secret life is threatened to be exposed when he and his partner are seen stealing drugs from a powerful drug dealer. When his son is kidnapped and the drug dealer demands the return of what was stolen, the cop must figure out how to get the drugs into the right hands, protect his son and keep his secret from the other police officers who are on his tail. It looks as if it is going to be a long, sleepless night.
Sleepless Night shows us that French people can be badass too. Others have compared this film to Die Hard, which is understandable as there are many similarities.

Sleepless Night (Nuit Blanche)
Directed by Frédéric Jardin
Written by Frédéric Jardin and Nicolas Saada and Olivier Douyère
France, 2011
Sometimes, a movie’s simplicity makes it effective. And whatever else can be said of Sleepless Night, or Nuit Blanche in its native France, it’s incredibly effective. Centered on an almost laughably basic concept—a French cop has to retrieve his son from a seemingly endless and seedy nightclub by returning some pilfered cocaine—this taut, relentless thriller from co-writer and director Frédéric Jardin is a must for any fan of the action genre. And if you get antsy at reading subtitles, forget it: Sleepless Night is breathless entertainment.
Tomer Sisley stars as Vincent, a crooked cop whose decision to, along with his partner, Manuel, steal ten kilos of cocaine from dealers working for a fearsome mobster opens the film. The theft goes awry, though: one of the dealers gets...

As is customary of most festivals these days, we’ve been informed (via Deadline) that four Tribeca titles will see a spring VOD release through Tribeca Film. In this grouping, we can look forward to Death of a Superhero (which we loved at Tiff), The Giant Mechanical Man, Sleepless Night (my most anticipated of the lot), and Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story — all of which festival director Geoff Gilmore feels “embody the exceptional artistry and personal resonance that filmmaking at its finest can provide.” The lattermost of those will begin its VOD run on April 26th, while the other three can be expected on various platforms beginning April 17th.
You can read a synopsis of these four films below:

The Tribeca Film Festival announced its Spotlight and Cinemania programs today, including Morgan Spurlock’s latest documentary, Mansome, period drama Cheerful Weather for the Wedding with Like Crazy’s Felicity Jones (right), and Struck By Lightning, written by Glee’s Chris Colfer. “It was important that we head into Tribeca’s second decade highlighting projects that were attuned to the pulse of our cultural climate,” said director of programming Genna Terranova, in a release. “That said, both consciousness and levity play a prominent role in this year’s selection. Director: Frédéric Jardin Writer: Nicolas Saada Starring: Tomer Sisley, Joey Starr, Julien Boisselier, Serge Riaboukine, Laurent Stocker, Samy Seghir, Dominique Bettenfeld, Adel Bencherif, Birol Ünel, Lizzie Brocheré In the time span of a brutally intense 24 hours -- including a sleepless night for everyone involved in the film -- director Frédéric Jardin's Sleepless Night begins with a drug heist gone horribly awry and snowballs into a relentless powerhouse of non-stop action from that point onward. In a tale in which there are very few good guys and countless shades of baddies, it is difficult to surmise where the protagonist, Vincent (Tomer Sisley), falls. As fate would have it, Vincent possesses a bag of cocaine that was stolen from two cronies employed by a local drug lord named Marciano (Serge Riaboukine). Marciano therefore kidnaps Vincent's son and offers Vincent a trade -- the boy for the cocaine. Left with no other choice,...

The Midnight Madness sidebar at the Toronto International Film Festival is usually filled with your fair share of blood, gore and other twisted torment. Part of their currently stellar line-up this year (just look at The Raid, Kill List, God Bless America and more coming) is Sleepless Night. Breaking the mold of what is usually present in the late Ryerson showings, Frédéric Jardin‘s French crime thriller is all about upping the tension with every scene.
Vincent (Tomer Sisley) is a police lieutenant who also does some side work as a drug mule. A drop-off goes bad and the coke gets stuck with Vincent. The next day his son is kidnapped by the thug Jose Marciano (Serge Riaboukine) who also happens to own a massive nightclub. Going to retrieve his son, a pair of cops are also on his tail to stir things up, followed by the criminals who are...
