The gang in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" are always getting themselves into trouble, but the series creators can't be quite as reckless as their characters. As lawless as the series may seem, they have to abide by the same safety codes as every other major network show. The much-needed protection of unions and insurance has made it so cruder methods used in the filmmaking days of yore are no longer kosher on set. Unfortunately, that means that certain dangerous practical effects from the gritty New Hollywood era have gone the way of the Dodo. So when the "Sunny" creators wanted to mimic an effect from acclaimed filmmaker David Cronenberg's early career hit "Scanners," they ran into a major roadblock.
An important moment in American history is re-imagined in "The Gang Cracks the Liberty Bell," in which the gang's timeless adversary Rickety Cricket gets his head blown off violently (albeit accidentally) with a musket.

“Falling” will be the opening film of the 28th edition of the EnergaCamerimage Intl. Film Festival, which focuses on the art of cinematography. The film’s director Viggo Mortensen and cinematographer Marcel Zyskind will attend the opening, which takes place on Nov. 14 in Toruń, Poland.
The film, which will compete for Camerimage’s Golden Frog, centers on John, who lives with his partner, Eric, and their daughter, Mónica, in California, far from the traditional rural life he left behind years ago. John’s father, Willis, a headstrong man from a bygone era, lives alone on the isolated farm where John grew up. Willis’s mind is declining, so John brings him West, hoping that he and his sister, Sarah, can help their father find a home closer to them. Their best intentions ultimately run up against Willis’s angry refusal to change his way of life in any way.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
In remembering David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, one scene immediately comes to mind: Viggo Mortensen fighting two fully clothed men in a bathhouse while completely nude. Cronenberg, never one to shy away from showing the human body,...

IMAX and Warner Bros Home Entertainment have agreed a deal to co-finance and produce virtual reality experiences for three of the studio’s upcoming tentpole releases.
The deal commences with Zack Snyder’s superhero movie Justice League in late 2017 and will be followed by Aquaman in 2018 and a third, as yet unannounced title in 2019.
The tie-in Vr experiences will receive an exclusive window in IMAX Vr centres before being made available across other Vr platforms including in-home and mobile offerings.
The first of IMAX’s Vr centres launched in Los Angeles in January, and five additional pilot centres in New York, California, the UK and Shanghai are expected to open in the coming months. If the trial is successful, the company intends to roll out the centres globally.

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up: David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars." The director: David Cronenberg (Canadian, 71 years old). I don't think I exactly need to introduce Cronenberg, unless your auteur radar extends only to directors who have been nominated for Oscars. The cinema's currently dormant king of body horror has shifted in and out of genres and levels of respectability, his previous 20 features taking him from shoestring kink ("Stereo") to more elaborate gross-out cult items ("Videodrome") to warped mainstream fare ("The Fly") to icy arthouse provocations ("Crash") to tastefully cerebral prestige items ("A Dangerous Method"), with any number of stages in between.

It is, it appears, an exciting time to be Eli Roth. A player on the Hollywood scene for over a decade, thanks to the runaway success of Cabin Fever, Roth was propelled to notoriety by the Hostel movies, and earned himself both commercial triumph and critical censure thanks to his seeming status as banner-waver for the so-called torture-porn subgenre that boomed in the Noughties.
Going into a new decade, the torture-porn phenomenon still seems to be going strong, as various film-makers continue to try and shock jaded audiences with ever more creatively-extreme shenanigans. Roth, however, seems set on diversifying his gruesome portfolio, with a spooky exorcism thriller sequel, a cannibal exploitation movie, and a horror TV show; he’s even got an evil clown movie on the horizon. Having attached his name to the well-received The Last Exorcism, it looks like Roth is set upon emphasising that he doesn’t...

Laurence Anyways
Written by Xavier Dolan
Directed by Xavier Dolan
Canada / France, 2012
No one will dispute Xavier Dolan’s ambition. The now 23-year-old filmmaker already has three features under his belt, each more audacious than the last. Laurence Anyways, his follow-up to the warmly received Les Amours Imaginaires, seems on its face to represent Dolan’s vault into greater things: a gender-breaking anti-romance spanning a decade, boasting a daunting 161-minute runtime and an unusual aspect ratio (1.33:1), and shot in both France and Québec, Laurence promises either greatness or utter folly. The truth, as usual, rests somewhere in the middle: Dolan’s film contains revelatory performances, moments of startling beauty, and his most strikingly empathetic material, but his excesses nearly discard the goodwill built up over the film’s first 100 or so minutes.
Ostensibly, the film revolves around Laurence (Melvil Poupaud), a high-school teacher who harbors and then acts on...

The A Dangerous Method Trailer has premiered. David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method (2011) movie trailer stars Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Vincent Cassel, and Sarah Gadon. A Dangerous Method‘s plot synopsis: “Based on Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed 2002 play “The Talking Cure,” the film centers on the relationship between Carl Jung (Fassbender) and Russian-Jewish patient Sabina Spielrein (Knightley), who ultimately causes a rift between Jung and mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) but also catalyses strong findings in regards to Jungian psychoanalysis.”
This looks very good and twisted. David Cronenberg has a great eye and I look forward to seeing how his eye is used in a drama movie. I can’t say I have ever seen Keira Knightley playing such a risky part before. I thought the same thing about Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream. The last few days have been crazy with trailers. Puss and Boots, Harry Potter, Footloose, The Muppets, 30 Minutes or Less, and many other films we didn't get a chance to focus on here at Tmp. But does the trailer for David Cronenberg's newest film, A Dangerous Method, reign champion over them all?
No, not really. Well I wanted this to be a really good trailer, I was mostly disappointed. It's pretty short, despite being a theatrical trailer. And while the story of Sigmund Freud's relationship with Carl Jung is interesting, I didn't really feel any of the tension between them in this trailer. It mostly focuses on Freud's affair with his patient Sabina Spielrein, which doesn't seem to be the main facet of the story.

Aren't you glad you didn't look at the bootleg? Here's a proper-quality trailer for David Cronenberg's new film, A Dangerous Method, which stars Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen as Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, respectively. Check it out below. (You can also see the trailer at the film's official site [1].) Really, all I need to see here is Michael Fassbender as Jung and I'm sold. But Viggo looks great, as does Vincent Cassel, and some of Keira Knightley's moments help ease any anxiety I had about that casting. (A few other moments make me worry about her accent, but we'll see how that works out when the time comes.) And then with Howard Shore's music and the characteristic Cronenberg title cards working with the lovely cinematography of Peter Suschitzky, there's a lot of Dead Ringers feeling here. (Which is appropriate as that was the first Cronenberg/Suschitzky pairing.

Sony Pictures Classics announced that they have picked up the distribution rights to David Cronenberg's new film, A Dangerous Method. The film is based on a play by Christopher Hampton (Atonement) called The Taking Cure who also wrote the screenplay. The film has an amazing cast of actors that includes Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, a mutual patient. I'm a big fan of the films of Cronenberg, and you can't argue with such a wonderful cast. This is sure to turn out to be a great film.
Here's the story synopsis:
Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung (Michael Fassbender) takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) as his patient in A Dangerous Method. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud. Both men fall under Sabina’s spell.

We’ve missed you David Cronenberg. It’s been four years since your last feature and we are getting impatient. Thankfully, you are working hard with two new films and we now know who will be distributing one. We get word today that Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the Us rights for A Dangerous Method, the film based on Christopher Hampton‘s 2002 play The Talking Cure, and starring Viggo Mortensen, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, and Vincent Cassel. There is no word on release, but expect it later this year after its confirmed Venice Film Festival premiere.
As for his next film Cosmopolis, currently shooting in Toronto, expect a release in 2012. That drama stars Robert Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Samantha Morton, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand and Sarah Gadon. For now check out the full press release, and a bootleg trailer for A Dangerous Method. I recommend completely avoiding it until the real thing,...

Good news for David Cronenberg fans: his next film, A Dangerous Method, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics. The movie is an adaptation of the play The Talking Cure by Christopher Hampton, and stars Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein, the woman who was their mutual patient. We don't have a release date yet, but expect it to hit the fall festival circuit. (Tiff is the likely home, given David Cronenberg's status as a Canadian artistic hero [1], but it could also hit the Venice fest.) Here's some of the Spc press release announcing the pickup: Cronenberg once again gathered a prestigious crew to work on A Dangerous Method, director of photography Peter Suschitsky (A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises), composer Howard Shore (The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, Avatar), editor Ronald Sanders (A History Of Violence,...

For the sixth straight year, home entertainment revenue has slid as surging interest in digital distribution and Blu-ray disks failed to make up for dropping DVD sales and rentals. The industry brought in $18.8 billion in the U.S. in 2010, down from $19.4 billion the year earlier, according to data released Thursday by the Digital Entertainment Group. The peak year for the industry came in 2004, when revenue was at $21.8 billion, with $4.4 billion coming from VHS. But VHS quickly faded after that, bringing in zero revenue in 2009, and consumers began dabbling with digital distribution. A next-generation DVD format war also didn’t help matters, and the industry has been declining every year since 2004. Nevertheless, the Deg, headed by Warner Home Video president Ron Sanders, stressed that Blu-ray players are now in 27.5 million American homes and sales and rental of software surged 53% to $2.3 billion. Also rising were digital sales and rentals, up 19% to $2.5 billion.

Stellar times for Star Trek….a Writers Guild nomination, a Producers Guild nomination and now this! But where are those Inglorious Basterds among the editors? One of the most interesting noms among the Ace’s lists is in the Documentary category – This Is It. Almost all but forgotten, except for those full-page Fyc ads of the Jackson rehearsal documentary in Variety. I’d love to see it as the big surprise Best Picture nominee on nomination morning. No film has won the Academy Award for Best Picture without also having received an Ace editing nom since “Ordinary People” in 1981.

As the nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning for the American Cinema Editors' 60th annual Ace Eddie Awards, this year's awards season is looking more and more like a Hollywood version of Comic-Con.
Just like the Art Directors Guild, the editors organization nominated "Avatar," "District 9" and "Star Trek."
Those three movies will compete for best edited dramatic feature film along with "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air."
Two Meryl Streep vehicles -- "Julie & Julia" and "It's Complicated" -- were nominated in the best comedy or musical category along with "(500) Days of Summer," "The Hangover" and "A Serious Man."
For best animated film, the contenders are "Coraline," "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Up."
"This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, scored a slot in Ace's best documentary race alongside "The Cove" and "Food, Inc."
An honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950, Ace's noms usually point toward Oscar victory...

If the fourth quarter is a pressure cooker for theatrical execs, consider the lot of their hapless colleagues in home entertainment.
Summer's biggest theatrical titles tend to hit shiny disc between October and January, making the year-end a make-or-break period for studio's home entertainment divisions. Happily, the availability of $99 Blu-ray Disc players and an expanding HD footprint have execs anticipating more holiday cheer this year.
Consumer spending last Christmas was so slack that the fourth quarter actually tugged down annual revenue in home entertainment rather than bolstering it. This time, though, with year-to-date sector revenue off 10%, industryites expect that a solid holiday session will brighten home-entertainment's year-end report card.
"Players are down below $200 now, and if we don't see a whole lot of $99 players, I will be very surprised," said Bo Andersen, executive director of the Entertainment Merchants Assn. "I think that is a very good stimulus for consumers buying Blu-ray software.

- [This is the second part in a two-part interview with film editor Ronald Sanders who most recently work with David Cronenberg on Eastern Promises. Read yesterday's first portion here.]AA: Because you only screen rushes with Cronenberg once a week, does that mean the footage is given to you and you start cutting completely without direction?Rs: He’ll tell me things he likes, things he doesn’t, sometimes I’ll see something watching the rushes that I didn’t realize. Generally speaking, the first time I just cut it any way that I want. If there’s something he hasn’t told me he prefers, I’m confident enough with him that I’ll just cut it my way. It’s very easy to change later. AA: Is your initial drive just performance? Rs: You can’t do it as schematically. It would be nice if you could. These days, now that we’re working digitally, the tapes come in the morning from the transfer house. As it digitizes I’ll just watch it. That’s our screening.

- [Editor's Note: Today we launch a new feature here on Ioncinema.com called ‘Behind the Cut’ - an exclusive Q&A series with prominent feature film editors who more often than not are involved in the projects we promote here on the site. Adam Azimov will shed light into the often overlooked art of film editing. This is the first part of a two part Q&A with Ronald Sanders. It focuses on general editing and work anecdotes, while the second part will take an intimate look at specific editing techniques in some of Ron’s films. Enjoy!] Ronald Sanders is one of Canadian cinema’s best kept secrets. He, along with others like Susan Shipton and Reginald Harkema, remains hidden in the dark backrooms of the film industry. He works ceaselessly from early in the production to long after the camera has stopped rolling and the sets have been dismantled. So who is Ronald Sanders? He’s a film editor, and chances are you’ve never heard of the man behind the cut in every David Cronenberg film since 1979, save “The Brood.” Ron has won 3 Genies for his editing in Dead Ringers, Crash and eXistenZ. He won the Directors Guild of Canada Craft Award for ‘Outstanding Picture Editing’ on A History of Violence and has been nominated for a slew of other awards. Not only has Ronald Sanders cut most of Cronenberg’s masterpieces, he has also worked with other great Canadian and international filmmakers, including Norman Jewison,
