The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

It wouldn’t be hard to confuse this year’s Emmy nominees for acting with some sort of Forbes list. The talent across the lead, supporting and guest categories for both actors and actresses in drama and comedy include seven under age 30: Lead comedy actress nominees Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”); lead drama actress nominee Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), supporting drama actress nominee Simona Tabasco (“The White Lotus”), supporting limited series actress nominee Camila Morrone (“Daisy Jones & the Six”), guest drama actress nominee Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) and guest drama actor nominee Keivonn Montreal Woodard (“The Last of Us”), who is the second-youngest Emmy nominee of all time. It’s an interesting trend that speaks to the stories that resonated with Emmy voters this year — as well as the work done by casting directors to seek out talent that rivals that of seasoned performers.

“I think a lot of people don’t know what we do because a lot is done behind closed doors. And I think what’s great about what we do is that we really are affecting how a movie’s going to turn out, and that’s very exciting,” reveals casting director Victoria Thomas. She earned an Emmy nomination casting the hit drama “The Last of Us” for HBO. It’s a project she says needed the right mix of known and unknown talent to capture the essence of the post-apocalyptic world that viewers couldn’t get enough of. “From the beginning we wanted to have the ability to introduce new actors into it, but also to sort of honor the game and honor the actors who have been a part of it, and also honor the fans,” she explains. Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. As it goes against “Succession” in this race, it will also have to fend off two-time winner “The Crown,...

Great casting is one of the things best defined by what it is not. There’s an alchemy to the assembling of a cast — particularly a larger ensemble — that can only be achieved with luck and a sharp eye. And while the 2022-2023 TV season saw plenty of larger-than-life performances and jaw-dropping transformations, these four first-year series managed, in wildly different ways, the same balancing act of star turns and sharply delineated supporting roles. Here are four series worthy of Emmy Award consideration for their feats of casting.

Peacock’s “Mrs. Davis” is a juicy blend of absurd humor, technological malaise, cheeky action/adventure, and magician con artists. Not to mention a medieval quest in the age of smartphones and a bold stance on the viability of falafel with pineapple in it. At its simplest, the show is perhaps a parable about how mankind creates God, and so God becomes obsessed with why a nun in Reno won’t talk to her and sends her on a quest to find the Holy Grail. Really.
As much as the success of the “Mrs. Davis” tone rests on creators Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez and the writing team and directors, it is equally on the cast members to bring that manic, incredibly Reno energy to life. So Lindelof and Hernandez turned to casting director Victoria Thomas to structure an audition process that could find actors able to handle the show’s many layers simultaneously.

Perhaps it’s a blessing (very much in disguise) that the spoiler discourse is once again raging (thanks “Succession”!), since it’s difficult to imagine a show better suited to run roughshod over entrenched positions on dispensing plot details than “Mrs. Davis.” Are you of the opinion that nothing remarkable or surprising about a yet-to-be-seen television show should be shared in public forums like the internet? Well, then good luck telling your friends about Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof’s borderline indescribable creation — a new series any artificial intelligence skeptic or general fan of savvy storytelling should embrace with glee. “Great,” thinks the galaxy-brained spoiler subversive. “Lean into the knowledge. Tell me everything about it.” Ok! …um, except so much of what makes “Mrs. Davis” a riotous good time are the many, many unexpected twists and turns, whether it’s a pivotal revelation that changes our hero’s journey or...

In a day that was in turns hopeful, angry, determined and defiant, industry stakeholders set the stage Thursday in Berlin for a concerted, pan-European push to boost diversity, inclusion and representation in the continent’s screen industries.
The Equity and Inclusion Pathways Seminar, which took place Feb. 16 during the European Film Market, laid out an action plan that the day’s participants said would have a transformative impact on policy frameworks across Europe.
“I think there’s an awakening,” said Victoria Thomas, of the Anti-Racism Taskforce for European Film (Artef). “We don’t have to explain to people anymore. There’s a general consensus that something needs to be done.”
The seminar offered a vision of what a diverse, equitable and inclusive European film community might look like, given enough buy-in from those industry gatekeepers in a position to foster change.

Whether in its first-person action sequences, the period detail that puts the early 2000s on blast, its deeply creepy zombie makeup, or its immaculate use of Linda Ronstadt, “The Last of Us” is dominating TV lovers’ conversations. HBO’s post-pandemic apocalypse story of a smuggler named Joel (Pedro Pascal) bringing a potentially virus-immune girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to people who could potentially create a cure examines the nature of relationships under the most extreme circumstances. As Joel and Ellie cross the country, they encounter other survivors as well, people who sometimes have wildly different but always intelligible responses to the end of the world. Each episode demands a roster of incredible guest actors, each conveying the sense of having lived through calamity.
Much of the show’s success is a credit to the writing, but some of it has come through the show’s approach to casting. “The Last of Us...

Viewers of The Last of Us are praising the second episode for its opening set in Indonesia.
The HBO video game adaptation continued on Sunday (22 January), catching up with Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Tess (Anna Torv) as they transport the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsay) on a dangerous mission across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Each episode so far has featured a flashback, which takes place 20 years before the fall of civilisation that is triggered by the spreading of a brain-infecting fungus called Cordyceps.
Episode two opened in Jakarta, Indonesia, and saw an expert in the study of fungi learn of the outbreak. Chillingly, after discovering details of the outbreak, she tells an Indonesian military officer that there is no vaccine and her advice is to bomb the entire city.

The casting branch of the academy is a year shy of a decade old and still doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on January 10 (two days before Oscar nominations voting begins). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on March 9 (two days after the close of final Oscar voting).
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

FX assembled a formidable, curiosity-driving team to adapt “Kindred” for television. Showrunner and writer Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama, as well as a MacArthur fellow. Even though he only has a few TV credits, they still include a consulting producer gig on a little Emmy juggernaut called “Watchmen.” He’s joined by fellow tick-tock colleague Victoria Thomas, the exceptional, Emmy-winning casting director behind everything from “Ed Wood” and “Ali” to “The Leftovers” and “Insecure.” “Zola” director Janicza Bravo helms the pilot, while the series’ other executive producers include “The Americans” masterminds Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, as well as some guy named Darren Aronofsky.

Increasingly, television series are assembling dazzling “dream teams” of well-known and accomplished actors, each capable of carrying their own solo show. One of the biggest issues in the film industry is the lack of standards and protocols surrounding human resources, argued panelists during Sarajevo Film Festival’s “Staying Sane: Mental Health in the Film Industry” panel.
“There is no overarching body holding folks accountable for bad behavior that can harm our mental health, so what do we have? Harvey Weinstein and Scott Rudin, who have been abusing people for decades,” said Malikkah Rollins, co-founder of Documentality – a new organization made up of psychotherapists and filmmakers aiming to normalize conversation about mental health and wellbeing.
“There are some entities that are going through self-questioning because they think they have to, but others genuinely wanted to evolve,” she said, mentioning the murder of George Floyd as one of the catalysts. Adding that marginalized groups, from indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities to people of color and women, tend to deal with “an extra layer of...

Panel also discuss key approaches to aid mental health while working in the industry.
A mental health body for the film industry could help set much-needed standards and hold “bad behaviour” accountable, according to a Sarajevo CineLink panel of producers.
US producer Malikkah Rollins, who is also director of industry and education at Doc NYC and co-founder of mental health initiative Documentality, insisted that more industry-wide resources are needed to tackle the issue.
“The film community doesn’t really have standards and protocols around human resources,” she said. “I think one of the huge issues is that there’s no...

“The Mosquito Coast” is based on the best-selling 1981 novel by author Paul Theroux, uncle of the show’s star Justin Theroux (“The Leftovers”), who plays Allie Fox, an anti-establishment idealist who uproots his family on a dangerous quest through Mexico to flee the U.S. government. The ambitious action drama, already renewed for a second season by AppleTV+, was developed by Neil Cross (“Luther”) and author Tom Bissell, who also executive produce the series alongside Rupert Wyatt (who also directs the first two episodes) both Theroux men, Edward L. McDonnell, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Bob Bookman.
Melissa George (“In Treatment”) co-stars as Allie’s mysterious and elusive wife Margot Fox alongside Logan Polish as their rebellious teenage daughter Dina and Gabriel Bateman as their troubled son Charlie. While the novel was previously adapted by Peter Weir in the 1986 film starring Harrison Ford, this series aims to be truer to the...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
It’s official! Charlize Theron tells me that the script is done for the sequel to “The Old Guard,” her Netflix film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022. The gay couple, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will be back, too. “Oh, yeah!” Theron says. “They’re definitely there.” Meanwhile, Vin Diesel tells me that he has writers working on a “Fast & Furious” spinoff for Theron’s character, Cipher. One thing the Oscar winner won’t be doing is guest hosting “The Bachelor.” You’d think producers of the romance reality show would have asked Theron, an unabashed and vocal fan of the franchise. “They have not, goddamn it,” she cracked at her Africa Outreach Project benefit. Would she do it? “No!” she said. “I’d make a terrible host.

Casting directors wade through hundreds and hundreds of actors sometimes just for one role, and it’s safe to say they’ve seen it all when it comes to thespians trying to stand out from the crowd and land the part. When asked to share some do’s and don’ts for auditioning actors during Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: TV Casting Directors panel (watch above), Julie Harkin (“I May Destroy You” and “Industry”) had one key one. “Don’t get naked. I’ve had some self-tapes recently with people with their tops off. Don’t do that!” she exclaims.
As for what you should do, “just be natural,” she advises, with which our other panelists Kelly Valentine Hendry (“Bridgerton”), Victoria Thomas (“The Mosquito Coast”), Theo Park (“Ted Lasso”) and Michael V. Nicolo (“Young Rock”) all agreed. “I’m a big champion of being yourself and being who...
