In “The March on Rome,” which world premieres in the Venice Days sidebar of Venice Film Festival Wednesday, Northern Irish-Scottish filmmaker Mark Cousins tracks the ascent of fascism in Italy in the 1920s, and its fall-out across 1930s Europe. He also draws a dotted line from those events to the storming of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., in January 2021.
The documentary, illustrated with archive footage and Cousins’ characteristic cinematic analysis, starts with Donald Trump defending his decision to retweet a quote from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini: “It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a sheep.” Later in the film, Cousins inserts footage of Trump supporters attacking the Capitol, hoping to overturn Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

"He disappeared in silence." Sadly this is how everyone is recalling Augusto Tretti's recent death. He died on the 7th of June, and while 10 days have gone by since he passed away, it still seems that in Italy nobody has noticed it.Maybe the failure to notice comes because he closed himself off in his house on Lake Garda for a long time. Tretti's life in movies ended prematurely in 1985, when he directed Mediatori e Carrozze thanks to his friend Ermanno Olmi, a short movie released on TV five years after his third and final feature, Alcool. Our Deaths, in memoriam was the project title of Lav Diaz' Kagadanan sa Banwaan Ning mga Engkanto (2007). For the Ferroni Brigade, it became the motto of Venice 2011—specters of dear lives gone seemed to roam the event, the Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica as well as the Esposizione internazionale d'arte, and beyond.
We always commemorate the murder of Nika Bohinc and Alexis Tioseco on September 1st 2009, quietly, invariably in Venice; it was here that we heard about the crime; now, whenever we go to the press room to check our e-mails, deep down something inside us is afraid of getting another message like that one; fittingly, one of the last films we saw this year was Diaz' latest, Siglo ng Pagluluwal (Century of Birthing, 2011), which ends with a dedication to them, and talks about the way our loved ones, just like cherished ideas, notions and visions are essentially eternal,...

After the epic, intimate density of the Venice retrospective’s Anna, Augusto Tretti’s long-to complete Il potere (1972, started seven years earlier) is pure blunt-force political comedy. Employing lofi production techniques, non-professional actors, gag-and-landscape based mise-en-scène, Tretti’s film bares close resembles to films French New Waver Luc Moullet was making at the time, yet attacking with politics and ideology as direct and transparant as its own cinema.
This feature goes through the ages of mankind’s subtle evolution of power manipulation, from the Stone Age (cavemen endlessly chasing a chicken, until lightning strikes the ground and one man claims to be the god of fire) to the Roman (social-agrarian land reforms squashed by murdering Senators!) to the climactic and longest segment in 1919 Italy starring a papier-mâché head Mussollini (with Tretti underneath) as he speaks in the language of nationalism, religion and reform while simultaneously working for capitalist interests. The retrospective at this year's Venice film festival is dedicated to Italian experimental cinema of the 1960s and 70s.
Designed by Enrico Magrelli and his team (Domenico Monetti, Luca Pallanch) from a commission and idea of Mostra director Marco Muller, it has been conceived in full consistency with the Mostra's Orizzonti section, which is dedicated every year to showing short medium and feature length films showcasing new trends of world cinema. Research, experimentation, new languages, "non mainstream" and cross-discipline works are therefore represented both in the premieres of Orizzonti and in the Retrospective section. No doubt many will also make a connection with this year's presentation of an impressive restoration of Nick Ray's We Can’t Go Home Again.
The retrospective includes many films that were never (or seldom) shown outside of Italy, among which a great number of absolute discoveries, as well as the long-awaited true restoration of...
