Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Julia,” now streaming on Max.
“Julia” might put a strong focus on the food, but it’s a show that also has a lot more on its mind. The Max comedy series takes on a wide range of 1960s-era social issues, including feminism, homosexuality, civil rights and the anti-war movement.
“Julia” wraps up its second season Thursday with an eventful finale that includes filming an ambitious crustacean segment — in the “Lobster a l’Americaine” episode. After cooking and hitting farmer’s markets in the south of France with her friend and co-author Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini), the Childs — played by Sarah Lancashire and David Hyde Pierce — spend time in Paris, then return to Boston where they must confront — and foil — an FBI investigation into Wgbh’s “subversive” activities, with help from station employees like producer Alice (Brittany Bradford).

Season one of Max’s Julia introduced Sarah Lancashire as Julia Child, the iconic chef and author who taught American television audiences the art of cooking with The French Chef. The first season delved into Child’s personal and professional life while charting her ascension to TV star. Season two picks up the larger-than-life television personality in France, where she and her loving husband, Paul (David Hyde Pierce), are visiting Simca (Isabella Rossellini) and working on a new cookbook.
Series creator, writer, and executive producer Daniel Goldfarb revealed that they intended to go to France in season one, but that never transpired. Once the series was renewed for season two, there was never a question the story would include a trip to the South of France.
“We got Isabella Rossellini to play Simca Beck, Julia’s writing partner, and then just because of Covid and everything, it became too complicated.

“The thing that really jumped off the pilot script that I read was the relationship between Paul and Julia, two very strong people,” recalls David Hyde Pierce about what drew him to the HBO Max series “Julia.” The first season of the show focuses on how icon Julia Child started her television cooking series “The French Chef” on public television in Cambridge, Ma. The four-time Emmy-winning actor stars as Julia’s husband Paul, whose initial “skepticism” about TV was overcome by “his love for and belief in her.” “I liked that journey,” adds the actor. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Although the series centers on Julia, it showcases just how fascinating and impressive an individual Paul was as well. “He’s this extraordinarily complicated man with multiple loves in his life, multiple careers,” notes Pierce. Early episodes of the season show Paul’s serious pursuit of painting and photography,...

From the very start, “Julia” producer Chris Keyser decided there wouldn’t be any shortcuts when it came to creating the food scenes for HBO Max’s origin story of the famous TV chef. It had to taste good and look even better to honor the spirit of Julia Child.
Production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein and food stylist Christine Tobin threw themselves into making sure all the ingredients were perfectly combined, and the result was a delicious-tasting menu of scenes spotlighting the mouth-watering dishes and the Childs’ enjoyment of eating. HBO Max’s “Julia” has been renewed for a second season, and von Brandenstein recently returned from a scouting trip
to France.
“It was just wonderful,” says von Brandenstein. “I hope we can carry that torch into our next adventure. The food is still central, and there’s no place better to start than in France.”

For Julia production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein, the most important aspect of her job was to recreate Julia Child’s home kitchen. While Julia, played by Sarah Lancashire, travels the world in the series, she always returns to her kitchen to work on new ideas.
Julia tells the story of Julia Child as she rose to prominence with her television show The French Chef. At the time, there were no cooking shows on television but Julia Child had a vision that she would not give up on. She went so far as to pay for the entire pilot episode of her show to prove that she could have an audience and that decision has changed how Americans thought of television and cooking.
Since it was important to recreate the kitchen down to the details, von Brandenstein found old photos and original designs that Paul and Julia Child drafted when they...

This big screen, big star crowd-pleaser is a whopping entertainment yet too disjointed to satisfy as a gangster movie. It can ignore history to make its points, but what is gained by killing off the only characters we really love? Audiences didn’t feel shortchanged: Sean Connery and Robert De Niro deliver strong characterizations and Ennio Morricone’s music is ideal. Brian De Palma’s visual instincts are at full strength too; the show is marvelous to look at. It’s a real winner, at least when its not running in knee-jerk Scarface overkill mode.

“Wow, this is a bold lady for 1961!,” thought “Julia” production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein when she saw the vibrant colors culinary icon Julia Child chose for her home kitchen. She was tasked with recreating Julia and husband Paul Child’s Cambridge, Ma house for the HBO Max series, whose first season shows the beloved cook developing and shooting the early episodes of her series “The French Chef.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
To bring Julia’s kitchen to life, von Brandenstein drew on papers and documents that the Childs gifted to Harvard’s Schlesinger Library. “They left their papers including their plans for the kitchen… the original renovation of the house, photographs, and there are detailed descriptions,” notes the production designer of what resources she had to guide her work. Those materials gave her a glimpse into Julia’s style. She observes that the star cook “believed in strong...

It’s a quality true-life mystery-exposé that doesn’t come off as tabloid trash or Oliver Stone hysteria — the true story of Karen Silkwood is told without cooking the books. The all-superstar cast is something too — Meryl Streep, Cher and Kurt Russell. Only a fine director like Mike Nichols could steer this one into good entertainment & memorable cinema territory.

The 21st Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards ceremony was billed as a “Return to Hollywood.” Backdrops from classic films dotted the interior of the Ray Dolby Ballroom lobby. Johnny Crawford and his Orchestra kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Hooray for Hollywood.” Even a handful of the evening’s big winners were films that fit the theme perfectly.
As expected, “La La Land” continued its storybook run through awards season, with David Wasco’s team winning for Contemporary Film. Simon Callow as PapagenoAmadeus is not a biopic, it’s a myth. Milos Forman’s adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s play is an utterly absurd portrayal of a long ago, unknown relationship. Antonio Salieri may not have had any negative feelings toward Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but that hardly matters. The legend, a story of deep faith that twists into jealousy, is a whole lot more interesting than the truth.
The film’s production design mimics the delicious falseness of its narrative. The Vienna of Emperor Joseph II is opulent, to be sure, but it is a strange opulence. Rather than focus on the grandeur of the palaces, Forman keeps much of the drama in drawing rooms. Production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein and art director Karel Cerny keep away from too much gold and silver,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

The lavish, ornate designs of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” the druggy 70s’ SoCal beach-city look of “Inherent Vice” and the fairy-tale landscape of “Into the Woods” are among the work nominated by the members of the Art Directors Guild for the Adg’s 19th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards.

The History Channel has released a full trailer for their new four-hour Houdini miniseries. The show will follow the life of the legendary magician from his beginnings in desperate poverty to the worldwide fame that he gained. The series stars Adrien Brody, and it looks like it's going to be pretty damn good.
Before David Blaine and David Copperfield, there was one man whose name was synonymous with being the master of illusion and escape - Harry Houdini. Houdini follows the man behind the magic as he finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era, from U.S. presidents to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Grigori Rasputin. The drama will chronicle the life of a man who can defy death through his stunts, his visions and his mastery of illusion.

A witty romantic drama, Words And Pictures stars the engaging duo of Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen working together on-screen for the first time.
Prep school English teacher Jack Marcus (Owen) laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his spare time with drink versus the art of language. He meets his match in Dina Delsanto (Binoche) – an abstract painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish.
With a performance review looming and his teaching job on the line, Jack hatches an inspired plan for galvanizing student interest in their studies: he declares a war between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter.

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

Saturday Night Fever's 'shining light' in 1970s polyester tracked down for museum's Hollywood costume show
The most famous white suit in the world, a classic example of the finest 1970s polyester tailoring, has been tracked down by the Victoria and Albert Museum after an international search.
The three-piece suit was as much a star of the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever as John Travolta who played Tony Manero, or the Bee Gees, who provided the soundtrack for the story of a young man who disco-dances his way out of the ghetto.
Bought off the peg in a cheap men's clothes store in Brooklyn, the suit was last seen in public 17 years ago, when it was sold at a Christie's auction to an anonymous bidder for $145,000 (£93,000), three times the top estimate. The curators of this autumn/winter's exhibition on Hollywood costume were determined to find it and put out an international appeal.

It seems that every award season cinemas big and small are assaulted by a glut of biopics. Whether they are a retelling of an inspirational personal triumph al a 127 Hours or whether they retell the stories of life’s heroes and characters. Already in the run-in to 2012’s Oscar Ceremony we have already had Phyllida Lloyd’s the iron lady which had a powerhouse of a performance from Meryl Streep, so at least there was some value if everything else was such a cataclysmic misfire. Other recent and forthcoming biopics include J.Edgar and Albert Nobbs. Instead of looking forward to those films, I will use this opportunity to list some examples of biopics that show how varied this mode of storytelling can be, without that reliance of awards baiting coming into view.

David Shariatmadari continues our writers' favourite film series with Milos Forman's opulent tale of Mozart and his rival

There are films that take your breath away before they've even begun. The first four minutes of Milos Forman's Amadeus – the credits, in fact – contain more drama and pathos than many directors manage in 120. The scene is Vienna, a winter's night in the 1820s. From somewhere inside a grand apartment a man screams "Mozart!" as the snow billows outside. "Forgive your assassin!" He is answered, first by a great dismal chord from the last act of Don Giovanni, then by two servants, who are bringing the cream cakes they hope will shut him up, but end up breaking the down the door. Inside they find their master has slit his throat,...

Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer will play the leads in "The Irishman," a crime story that Jonathan Hensleigh will direct.
Code Entertainment is producing the action movie, which is based on the real story of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson). Hensleigh and Jeremy Walters ("Dali") wrote the script, inspired by the book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia" by Rick Porrello.
Greene was a violent Irish-American gangster who competed with the Italian mob in 1970s Cleveland and ended up provoking a countrywide turf war that crippled the mafia. Walken will play the loan shark and nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer is a Cleveland police detective who befriends Greene.
Code's Al Corley, Bart Rosenblatt and Eugene Musso are producing, along with Dundee Entertainment's Tommy Reid and Tara Reid, who brought the property to Code. Jonathan Dana, Peter Miller and Porrello are exec producers, with George Perez serving as co-producer.
