Exclusive: Matt Brodlie and Jonathan Kier’s Upgrade Productions has boarded world sales rights to Shoah feature Shttl, which played at the London and Rome Film Festivals (where it won the audience award) this fall.
The film was previously with Bron Releasing but is no longer on the slate after Bron needed to streamline its film business.
Black and white drama Shttl follows the inhabitants of a Yiddish Ukrainian village on the eve of the Nazi invasion, known as Operation Barberossa.
Shot in Ukraine last year (with an almost entirely Ukrainian crew), the production fully reconstructed a traditional shtetl (or village) outside of Kiev to recreate life prior to the Nazi onslaught (as few traces of that life now remain), but it was subsequently destroyed by the Russian invasion earlier this year. Following the filming in 2021, the set (which included a synagogue which had been blessed and consecrated) had been...

Netflix has bagged Thomas M. Wright’s tense Cannes thriller The Stranger and will premiere it globally in October.
The Australian drama had its world premiere in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival this year, where Deadline critic Anna Smith said it revealed “quietly compelling insight” about the nature of police work.
The film will premiere in Australia at the Melbourne International Film Festival today and have a local theatrical release, before launching on Netflix worldwide.
Produced by See-Saw Films, Anonymous Content and Blue Tongue Films, whose founder Joel Edgerton stars alongside Sean Harris, the film is based around two strangers who strike up a conversation on a long journey. Film and TV production in Ukraine — which has been a growing hub for European shoots in recent years — has ground to a halt as Vladimir Putin’s Russian army has launched an invasion that has killed scores of people and seized control of substantial sections of the country. “It’s not a situation where one can think of filming something,” Darya Bassel, a Ukrainian film producer and a programmer with the country’s largest documentary film festival, told TheWrap. “It’s not even like it was in the Ukrainian revolution in 2013. It’s much much worse. People are terrified, and they’re just trying to be safe.” One film executive with an understanding of the international markets explained to TheWrap that Ukraine has managed to draw many European and specifically French-language films to shoot in the region thanks in part to an attractive tax credit. While it’s too early to tell,...

German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon, who was murdered in Auschwitz at age 26, and her autobiographical masterwork “Life? or Theatre?,” which was created in a two-year burst in the early 1940s, are the subjects of “Charlotte,” a unique animated biopic drama that marks a career turning point for Toronto producer Julia Rosenberg.
Rosenberg first encountered “Life? or Theatre?” — which comprises hundreds of gouache paintings, a 32,000-word journey-of-an-artist tale filled with dark family secrets and numerous text overlays and music cues — as a bat mitzvah gift. She soon developed “a very possessive personal relationship” with the book. “It’s the book I would buy and give when I fell in love,” she said.
After a decade racking up producer credits on notable Canadian dramatic and documentary features, Rosenberg decided one morning in 2012 that an animated film should be made of Salomon’s life, and set about harnessing her passion and wide network to make it so.

Joe Dante (Gremlins) is set to direct Labirintus, a supernatural-thriller set in the catacombs beneath Buda Castle in Hungary.
Goldcrest Films International has boarded sales on the project and will launch the project at the Afm (Nov 4-11).
Production is due to begin early next spring with casting underway on the story of a paranormal investigator and psychiatric researcher who join forces to explore an abandoned subterranean Soviet research facility, hidden within the Budapest Labyrinth.
When supernatural forces confound and torment the group they begin to question their own sanity. To escape they must quash their fears and lead their team to find and destroy the dark heart of the maze.
Dante described the script as “compelling” and “chilling” and expressed excitement to be working with the team behind the new thriller.

A young filmmaker living in the Philippines has won the inaugural picSeeder competition. Avid Liongoren's pitch, Saving Sally, was voted the winner by five of the six international judges.
The intention of the contest launched in February by filmmaker Bill Bennett and his wife, producer Jennifer Cluff, was to reward a short film by an aspiring filmmaker. Only after the judges had viewed the short-listed entries and chosen Saving Sally did they discover it.s a feature-length film, a highly original, three-way love story involving a boy, a girl, and a monster.
The prize: post production house Spectrum will fund the completion of the film, including the compositing and marketing materials. French-based international sales agent Wild Bunch aims to launch the title at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

The picSeeder concept seemed easy to grasp: a global, online pitching competition designed to enable aspiring filmmakers to fund short films.
Alas, the execution proved challenging and the number of entries received by the June 30 deadline- 32- is way below the volume expected by the organisers, filmmaker Bill Bennett and his wife, producer Jennifer Cluff.
Contestants were invited to submit a 1-minute pitch video. Members of the site (www.picseeder.com) get to vote on their favourite pitch until July 8. Those who send in the 12 most popular pitches will be asked to provide a 3-minute video.
The winner will be determined by an international jury comprising Us sales agent Robbie Little, French financier/producer Jean-Charles Levy, Stephen Gates, New York-based head of the literary department at talent management company Evolution Entertainment, actress Michelle Ang and Indian producer Udayan Baijal.

Some big purchases were recently made – first, Anchor Bay acquired the rights to the SXSW 2012 Midnight selection Girls Against Boys, which resulted in one of the first film distribution deals at the festival. Directed by Austin Chick (Xx/Xy) and produced by Aimee Shieh and Clay Floren, the thriller follows Shea, a 21-year old student who, after a brutal sexual assault, teams up with fellow nightclub bartender Lu for a weekend of “one beautifully staged execution after another.” Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, The Crazies) and Nicole Laliberte (Dinner for Schmucks, Kaboom) play the murderous duo in the rape revenge film that has already been described as “controversial.” [Deadline]
And we won’t have to wait long to see their killing spree – it was confirmed by Kevin Kasha, executive vice president of acquisitions and co-productions for Anchor Bay, that the film will be released this year as part of their “2012 line-up.

Stomp the Yard and The Losers director Sylvain White has been busy…super busy. Currently working on a few highly anticipated productions, including Frank Milller’s Ronin and the King Arthur legend Pendragon, he also has found time to play mentor and producer to writer-director Julien Magnat’s psychological thriller Faces in the Crowd.
Starring Milla Jovovich, queen of the Resident Evil films, the horror-thriller centers on a woman living with “face-blindness” after surviving a serial killer’s attack. As she lives with her condition, one in which facial features change each time she loses sight of them, the killer closes in.
White is a producer on the film along with Scott Mednick (Where The Wild Things Are), Jean-Charles Levy, Clement Miserez and Kevin DeWalt.
It’s slated to be released next year. There’s been no official release of a trailer yet but when there is you know S&A is on it!

#26. Lullaby For Pi - Benoît Philippon Being released in France this December, I figure this co-production's only real shot at a festival debut might be in Park City and on Main Street (the film's strong musical element means a possible concert - see trailer). With indie producer vet Killer Films' Christine Vachon as one of the producers, I figure Benoît Philippon's debut appears likely to grab a spot in the World Dramatic Competition. Starring Rupert Friend, Clémence Poésy, Matt Ward and Forest Whitaker, Lullaby For Pi sees Tom, a bewitching blues-jazz singer (Friend). Sadly, since his wife passed away, he can no longer sing nor smile. He spends his nights in the hotel room where they first met, waiting for her phone call that will never come. He hardly sees anyone except his best friend George, the hotel desk clerk. One of these nights, a girl, running away from an insistent pursuer,...
