Movies that take their title from a female protagonist’s name — from Mildred Pierce and Stella Dallas through Norma Rae to Vera Drake and Jackie Brown — instantly claim that woman’s rightful place at the heart of a story, often depicting struggle and sacrifice but also resilience and strength of character. The same applies to Jacques Audiard’s bracingly original crime musical Emilia Pérez, even if the woman herself doesn’t show up until some way in, when she emerges from the unlikeliest of cocoons.
The French director has always shown an adventurous spirit, switching genres with nimble assurance, and he continues to surprise in his ballsy tenth feature. Very loosely adapted by Audiard from journalist and author Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute, the film dexterously spans many styles. The baseline is a drama of criminality and redemption, but then there’s an unforced current of Almodóvarian humor, along with moments of melodrama,...

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. The film is the latest cinematic retelling of the miraculous story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, with the survivors being forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

The days of Quentin Tarantino being tied to a Star Trek movie go back to 2017, with the project in development for a handful of years before being scrapped. And although it wouldn’t have been written by him — an out of character move for the auteur — it still would have had those Qt touches…like violence. So would we have gotten the surely iconic line, “Ah man, I shot Spock in the face!”?
Screenwriter Mark L. Smith recalled meeting with Tarantino at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, pitching an idea that felt authentically Qt. Smith would play a key role in writing the script, with Tarantino of course bringing his voice to it. As Smith put it, “I think his vision was just to go hard. It was a hard R. It was going to be some Pulp Fiction violence. Not a lot of the language, we saved a...

Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines was made specifically for the Paramount+ streaming service, but now it has been announced that Paramount is going to be doing something I wish streaming services would do much more often: while continuing to stream the movie, they will also be giving it a digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release! The digital version will be available for rent or purchase as of December 5th, with the physical media release following on December 19th.
Said to be “based on an untold chapter penned by Stephen King“, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines centers on a young Jud Crandall in 1969, who has dreams of leaving his hometown behind but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to the town. The Pet Sematary prequel movie has released its official trailer.
Below is look at Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, the upcoming horror film that serves as the first prequel to Stephen King’s classic 1983 novel, which itself has previously been adapted to feature films (in 1989, a sequel in 1992, and remake of the original in 2019).

Samuel L. Jackson is addressing the backlash to longtime co-star Brie Larson as Captain Marvel in the MCU.
The “Secret Invasion” actor told Rolling Stone that Oscar winner Larson is an unapologetically “feminist,” which is just something Marvel fans and “incel dudes” alike will have to live with.
“Brie’s a stronger person than people give her credit for,” Jackson said of his “Marvels” co-star. “She’s not going to let any of that stuff destroy her. These incel dudes who hate strong women, or the fact that she’s a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she’s genuinely that.”
Jackson reflected on how he and Larson first became friends while working on the 2017 King Kong iteration “Kong: Skull Island.”

What makes a character in a film appealing to watch? Morris (Charles Boyland) laughs at Eula (Chantelle Han) for her tight leather trousers, which suggest that she thinks she’s in a different kind of movie. If her aim is to trade on simple sex appeal then the camera is, for the most part, not playing along. Intelligence can be appealing, but neither of these two has much of it, due to their really badly thought-out plan to steal valuable truffles from a trigger-happy former military man out in the middle of nowhere. What about plain old likeability? That’s not easy either when Eula is constantly snapping at Morris. But by the end of this film you’ll be rooting for her nonetheless, as she shows a level of sheer determination which puts her in the league of of Smilla or Jackie Brown, heroism in its purest form.
There’s a similar quality.

Quentin Tarantino recruited many notable actors for his third feature film Jackie Brown. The movie saw him teaming up with performers he’d never collaborated with before but always admired like Michael Keaton. But when Keaton initially heard about his role in Jackie Brown, he confided it wasn’t what he hoped it’d be at first.
Michael Keaton was initially disappointed with his role in ‘Jackie Brown’ Michael Keaton | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
For Tarantino, Keaton was the only actor he had in mind who could play the part of agent Ray Nicolette in Jackie Brown. Tarantino was determined to recruit the comic star for the movie, but Keaton didn’t share the filmmaker’s enthusiasm. Originally, Keaton turned down the offer. Tarantino believed he did so because the Batman star doubted he was a good fit for the Jackie Brown character.
But Keaton had other reservations when considering Jackie Brown.

Did anyone in the mid-‘90s really think that Quentin Tarantino was at risk of being a two-hit wonder? Certainly there wasn’t much reason to expect him to drop as cool and calm a movie as Jackie Brown for his third feature. Jackie Brown turns 25 this Christmas. It still looks and feels like the older sibling to its upstart predecessors, Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994), singled out among Tarantino’s movies for being more mature and tamped down in its ambitions, less flashy and postmodern than the clever gadgetry of what came before.

When working on Jackie Brown, Pam Grier admitted that her performance left her “exhausted.”
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment for Jackie Brown’s 25th anniversary, Grier reflected on starring in the 1997 film in which she portrayed a flight attendant caught smuggling money for an L.A. crime kingpin, Ordell Robbie (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson), and explained how the biggest issue for her during filming was pace.
“Quentin told me that Sam[uel L. Jackson] had a metronome-like quality that’s really fast, but that I’d have to slow down for Robert [Forster],” she said. “He warned me that not all actors can do that, so I had to learn.”
In the film, Grier’s character executes a plan to escape with the smuggled cash, going against Jackson’s Ordell and enlisting help from bail bondsman Max Cherry (the late Forster).

Considering the purely entertaining reads that are Quentin Tarantino’s first pair of books—his expansion of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and the recently released Cinema Speculation—it’s certainly fine by us for the director to take his time on announcing any plans for his 10th and final film. However, novel-writing isn’t the only thing keeping the filmmaker busy.
While at the last stop on his book tour for Cinema Speculation, at New York City’s Times Square venue The Town Hall, Tarantino revealed he has written an eight-part limited series he plans to shoot next year. While he was tight-lipped about sharing any more details (even cheekily shouting a “f*ck y’all” to a lively audience cheering for more information), he defiantly confirmed this new project would not count as his final film.

If you've ever seen a movie from homage extraordinaire Quentin Tarantino, then you're probably aware that excess is a crucial part of his DNA. The filmmaker behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is a man for which the word "restraint" is unlikely in his lexicon. For better or worse, when Tarantino wants to shock you, he'll find a way to make you flinch. It's been that way ever since his "Reservoir Dogs" days.
When Tarantino unleashes his signature wave of violence, he sure opens the floodgates. In his movies, people don't get shot, they pop like a bloody balloon as if it were sent directly from Pennywise himself. The over-the-top violence featured in his films make sense considering how much he reveres exploitation cinema. It's difficult to imagine anything that would make him flinch, but there's one aspect of filmmaking he finds particularly reprehensible.

Quentin Tarantino followed up his second directorial effort and cult classic "Pulp Fiction" with the 1997 crime film "Jackie Brown." An homage to the blaxploitation movies of the '70s, the film stars Pam Grier -- an icon from those blaxploitation flicks -- as the titular character, a Los Angeles flight attendant who gets entangled in a cat and mouse chase between the feds and Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), a gunrunner for whom she smuggles drugs and money.
Though some consider "Jackie Brown" to be one of Tarantino's most underrated movies, it is an anomaly in his filmography. Not only is "Jackie Brown" the sole Tarantino movie adapted from a previous work (it's based on Elmore Leonard's novel "Rum Punch"), it also lacks that certain oomph that has made the director both one of the most popular and controversial filmmakers of the modern era.

It is no surprise how many people are expressing grief at the death of Robert Forster from brain cancer at age 78. It was far too soon. He’s actually on screen now, in Vince Gilligan’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which hit both theaters and Netflix this weekend.
Anyone who met Forster knows what a kindly man he was, often handing out elegant silver letter openers to set visitors and new acquaintances; he gave me my second at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where he was promoting the intimate family drama “What They Had.” He steals the movie and provides its emotional center as the tough but vulnerable patriarch doggedly hanging onto his wife (Blythe Danner) as she slips into Alzheimer’s.

Quentin Tarantino considers Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to be the climax of his career, and thinks his next will be an epilogue.
Quentin Tarantino has been claiming since at least the release of Django Unchained that he was going to retire from directing movies with his 10th film. That plan hasn’t really changed, even as we now stand on the precipice of it with the release of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (his ninth movie… if you count both volumes of Kill Bill as a single film). In fact, whatever that film might be is starting to take vague tonal shape in the filmmaker’s head, as he revealed Wednesday that he thinks his last movie will be the equivalent of an epilogue to his career.

Quentin Tarantino like to steal from the movies he admires in the process of telling his own stories. This is no secret, this is something that he freely admits to. In a previous interview with Empire Magazine, the filmmaker said:
“I steal from every single movie ever made. If my work has anything, it’s that I’m taking this from this and that from that and mixing them together. If people don’t like that, then tough titty, don’t go and see it, alright? I steal from everything. Great artists steal; they don’t do homages.”
We have a great video essay for you to watch today that gives us a breakdown of how Tarantino steals from other films and seamlessly takes certain elements from the movies he loves and weaves them into his own work. The video comes from Nat Lee of Insider, who says:

As is our practice we've selected a handful of titles and frozen the films at utterly random moments without cheating (whatever comes up comes up!). It's our way of previewing new titles streaming each month. So what should you queue up for August 2019 ?(★ means we recommend catching them.) Please do let us know if you're dying to discuss any of the films and maybe we'll write about one or two of 'em You rarely tell us but we'll try if you do.

Jackie Brown (1997) ★ on Netflix
Is De Niro coughing to distract you from Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood for a minute? He's got a new trailer out and that would like a little attention, too. On the couch is Bridget Fonda giving what is easily one of her top two performances (the other one is in a little seen 80s movie called Scandal). We should probably see this particular Quentin Tarantino flick again.

Sylvester Stallone is hitting Netflix in a big way this August. Five of the famous director’s “Rocky” movies will be available on the streamer Aug. 1, alongside other classics such as “Groundhog Day,” “Jackie Brown” and “Something’s Gotta Give.”
While Netflix is bringing back the oldies for the summer month, new shows will also be added to its slate. Comedy will be in high-gear as Season 4 of Hasan Minhaj’s “Patriot Act” premieres Aug. 4 and Tiffany Haddish’s anticipated comedy special “They Ready” debuts Aug. 13. Season 3 of the Canadian comedy “Workin’ Moms” will also become available come the 29th.
There’s also a few Netflix originals on the docket to keep viewers entertained before networks debut new shows in the fall. “Dollar,” which drops Aug. 8, follows an unassuming assistant, Zeina, as she teams up with the self-assured Tarek to track down a dollar bill worth $1 million, and “Sintonia,” which...

Netflix is losing another bunch of TV shows and movies during the month of August.
To counter the losses, there will be a big injection of new content, from Netflix originals to CW dramas to new movies.
With all of the changes, it's challenging to keep track of what's coming and going.
That's why we've rounded up all the information for you below.
Jane the Virgin and iZombie are about to wrap their runs on The CW, meaning that during the month of August, all five seasons of each series will be available to stream.
Glow will be back for its highly anticipated third season, while Dear White People will serve up another humorous season.
The highly anticipated martial arts drama, Wu Assassins, will also receive its premiere during the month of August.
The list of departures is not quite as severe as what left in July, with it mostly being filled with older movies.

Quentin Tarantino scenes are like songs.
The kinetic trade offs of expletives and pop culture references form a rhythm. The quotable monologues are the ear worm singalong choruses. The violence — that releases the swell of tension — is the guitar solo, the violin crescendo, when the beat drops. And every time Samuel L. Jackson says “motherf–ker,” that’s the crash of symbols, trumpet blasts, the “throw your hands up.”
Tarantino lays it all down over samples from his inspirations: Sergio Leone, Jean-Luc Godard, Sam Peckinpah and Brian De Palma, just to name a few.
His scenes are self-contained. They have playback value. And they’re just so catchy. So, it is only appropriate to compile Tarantino scenes like one would an album to properly encapsulate his oeuvre. Choosing one scene from each of his movies, here are Quentin Tarantino’s Greatest Hits.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
With “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” now a certified hit, the debate over Quentin Tarantino’s best film has inevitably been re-inflamed all over again. In an effort to suss out the general consensus — or settle this debate once and for all — we asked our panel of critics to pick their favorite.
The winner, if only by a single vote, is up first.
“Inglourious Basterds”

From the heart-stopping prologue that kicks things off, to the gleeful (and enormously cathartic) bit of revisionist history that highlights its third act, “Inglourious Basterds” isn’t only the most entertaining Tarantino film, it’s also the one that best illustrates the primacy of moving pictures, and their unique power to change the world in their image. Tarantino deploys similar tricks to...

(Spoiler alert: While this doesn’t spoil any plot points about “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” it does offer an interpretation that might skew how you watch the film, or not. Plot details of other Tarantino movies have been kept to a minimum.)
To try to better understand “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” and where it fits in the Quentin Tarantino film canon, I sat down and ranked his films in order from least to most Tarantino. What do I mean by “most Tarantino”? That’s exactly the question I wanted to answer. I think the answer is, “a film that no one but Tarantino could make.”
What’s funny about Tarantino films isn’t just what we’re seeing on screen, but the audacity of putting it there. Did that character we love really just get killed? Like that? Is Tarantino really spending this much time on...

Netflix giveth and Netflix taketh away. Each month brings with it changes to the streaming network’s line-up, with some cool films being added at the expense of those that are being removed from the service. And this August is no exception.
In an annoying twist for fans of ironic and imaginative Rube Goldberg deaths, a number of the Final Destinations movies are going, as is Poltergeist, The Butterfly Effect, The Village and Zombieland. And unfortunately for horror fans, the new films don’t provide many scares.
The full list can be seen below:
