Shu Sakuratani is the creator behind the hit shonen manga Rooster Fighter, which pits a noble rooster against a horde of Kaiju across Japan. We got a chance to speak to the mangaka about their work on the project as well as what attracts them to the medium.
“Rooster Fighter” is now Available through Viz Media. You can find Shu Sakuratani on Twitter: @shu_sakuratani & on Instagram.
When did you first get interested in making manga?
I was working for a company, but quit, and the part-time work I took on after that was incredibly draining. Right around the time I was desperate to make a change, I encountered a manga called Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoi yo!! Masaru-san, and was amazed that such a manga could exist, which inspired me to become a manga artist. I would draw for fun as a student, but I had no idea that...

"Ultraman" is a franchise that has deep roots dating back to the mid-'60s with the original series that birthed the giant Japanese superhero. We've had several iterations of the character since but now, it's radical reinvention time: "Shin Ultraman" arrives from Toho and director Shinji Higuchi to give us an Ultraman for modern times. Much like "Shin Godzilla," "Shin Ultraman" very much succeeds in providing an update to the franchise that can stand up to modern scrutiny. But, in many ways, that's where the similarities stop with this absolutely insane, visually delightful, and downright haphazard reboot. What begins, instead, is something hard to classify but also impossible to look away from.
The movie takes place after Japan experiences a rapid growth in kaiju attacks. So, the Sssp kaiju defense task force is established to help deal with these monstrous threats. The group is led by Kimio Tamura (Hidetoshi Nishijima...

The “Godzilla” franchise is one of the most successful long-running film series out there. The iconic monster has gone down in cinema history as a metaphor for the horrors of nuclear warfare. However, the truth is that the quality of the franchise varies. The original “Godzilla,” directed by Ishiro Honda, is a brilliant piece of sci-fi filmmaking, and Hideaki Anno’s witty gem “Shin Godzilla” is a superbly written political thriller. Yet, features like “Destroy All Monsters” and the later Heisei entries of the 1990s show the unfortunate trend of repeated formulas that quickly becomes old and shoddy filmmaking that is a chore to watch. Not to mention, all of the American “Godzilla” projects have been misfires. Following the underwhelming finale feature “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah” and the poor 1998 American reboot, Toho would kickstart the experimental Millennium series. Things would start solid with “Godzilla 2000: Millennium” but lose momentum with “Godzilla vs.

Exclusive: Jeremy Robinson’s The Nemesis Saga novel series is getting the small screen treatment. Project Nemesis, the first book in Robinson’s series, is being developed for television by Sony TV and Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film (The Boys), with John Wick helmer Chad Stahelski set to direct and executive produce.
Project Nemesis, based on Robinson’s kaiju (giant monster) thriller, delivers the destruction common in the kaiju genre, but not without sacrificing character. When the DNA of Nemesis, the Greek goddess of vengeance, is merged with that of Maigo, a murdered little girl, the resulting trauma-fueled kaiju rampages from the backwoods of Maine to the streets of Boston in search of their killer. Heading up the response to this otherworldly threat is Jon Hudson, a sarcastic Dhs agent whose leadership of the agency’s Paranormal division was a joke—until now.

"Pacific Rim" was a turning point in Guillermo del Toro's career. He left "The Hobbit" after delays at MGM ate into his schedule. His passion project "At the Mountains of Madness" had fallen through due to a perceived lack of commercial viability. The filmmaker could feel the momentum he had worked so hard to build slipping away. So del Toro had to prove to his fans and to himself that he could still make movies (and quickly). So he changed practices. Before "Pacific Rim," the director had never made a movie in less than 115 days. His crew did "Pacific Rim" in...

It's relatively safe to say that Guillermo del Toro has a thing for monsters. Virtually every one of the films the director has made has featured some kind of horrifying creature. The obsession spans from the literal, like that of the Pale Man in "Pan's Labyrinth" and colossal Kaiju of "Pacific Rim, to the metaphorical, as with his first film, "Cronos," and the newly minted "Nightmare Alley." But del Toro's fascination with monsters isn't just morbid curiosity.
If it was, monsters in his films would remain solely terrifying and intense reflections of human nature. But del Toro also expresses clear admiration for them...

In the popularized series in Japan, from Nebula M78, the Land of Light, Ultraman is an alien. He chased Bemular down to planet Earth. During his tenure on Earth, he merged with Shin Hataya. He defended Earth against Kaiju. Ultraman was then recalled back after he battled Zetton. The title Ultraman comes from his human host. Additionally, he is the first Ultra who visited the Earth. Arguably, Ultraman is the face of the whole Ultra franchise. The Netflix Ultraman version is, however, slightly different from the original. The anime offers a fresh start to the superhero series. Think of monster movies from South East Asia and our first inclination is to come up with Kaiju and men in rubber costumes trampling all over miniature sets. Over the past few years, there has been a few more variants emanating from Korea with “Monstrum” and “Sector 7” two of the more popular examples displaying a more “Creature Feature” aesthetic with their monsters a bit smaller than the atomic giants. “Chawz” a comedy\horror from the region is, unlike the others, more explicit in referencing such productions that originated in the West. If you don’t believe me, just look at the title. It should sound familiar? Say it a bit quicker…. still not there yet? Think sharks and not that ridiculous series about Sharks in Tornados that seems to be going on for all of eternity.

According to the contrived mythology of Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, “titans” like Godzilla and Kong are mortal enemies because only one can reign supreme. Apparently ancient beasts have never been good at sharing. Every previous film in the franchise has been building toward their inevitable clash, and now it comes to big dumb life thanks to Adam Wingard’s massive and massively tedious tent-pole.
Godzilla vs. Kong opens with both iconic characters equally enraged by their current situations on Earth. Having survived the onslaught of attacks by Ghidorah (aka Monster Zero), Rodan, Mothra, and other titans in Godzilla: Rise of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla now seems hell-bent on attacking research facilities run by the Apex Corporation for no apparent reason. Kong on the other hand is being held in a containment facility on Skull Island where each morning he wakes up, scratches his hairy butt, takes a bath in a waterfall,...

If the release of Godzilla vs. Kong has you feeling nostalgic for the golden age of giant monsters, you’re not alone. There was a time when it felt like giant monsters ruled TVs and theater screens everywhere. They were even prominently featured in one of the most beloved arcade games of the 1980s: 1986’s “smash-em-up” Rampage.
Actually, there were quite a few years after Rampage‘s release when it remained one of the best ways to live out your giant monster fantasies. Later games would more fully realize the “destroy everything” philosophy that Rampage was built on, but it took a long time for another game to come close to matching (must less surpassing) Rampage‘s simple and satisfying gameplay. For years, it was the best way to let gamers play as Godzilla, King Kong, and even The Wolfman (despite the fact the games didn’t use those names...

Getting a new Mario game, even one ported from a previous generation, always feels like opening a present on Christmas morning. Nintendo obviously knows this, having gone so far as to include the never-before-seen Bowser’s Fury expansion as a bonus for players already familiar with the wonders of Super Mario 3D World. And while this new side experiment may not quite be enough to encourage returning players to undertake a second playthrough, newcomers finally have the chance to play one of the most underappreciated Super Mario gems on Nintendo Switch. It’s an apt way to cap off the plumber’s 35th birthday celebrations.
Originally released on the Wii U in 2013, Super Mario 3D World hasn’t lost any of its charm in the eight years since. This may sound surprising considering that all Nintendo fans seemed hungry for back then was the next proper evolution of 3D Mario platforming.
