Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz says today’s acquisition of rights to make dolls and toys stemming from Disney’s princess and Frozen will arm the company with more recognizable properties in a crowded marketplace.
“The importance of big franchises is going to become more critical than ever,” CEO Ynon Kreiz, who told Deadline in an interview after the deal was announced earlier today. Hasbro had previously taken the rights from Mattel in 2014.
Kreiz said the multi-year pact with Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing had “been in the works for a while.” Mattel already has had licensing deals with Disney for Pixar’s Cars, Toy Story and forthcoming spinoff Lightyear.
Investors cheered the news of the agreement, sending Mattel shares up 11% in morning trading, though it closed up a more modest 4% amid deteriorating market conditions.

Walt Disney Co plans to close at least 60 Disney retail stores in North America this year, representing about 20% of its worldwide total, the company said today.
The move will see the entertainment conglomerate focus more on digital shopping platforms. Disney said it is also looking at cutting back on its European stores, but added that stores in Japan and China will not be shuttered. Also unaffected will be Disney stores in theme parks and through vendor partners like Target.
There are approximately 300 Disney stores in the worldwide market. Disney did not reveal how many jobs would be lost as a result of the closings.
The news continues the trend away from retail shopping that’s been exacerbated by the pandemic. City storefronts across the nation stand empty, with little hope that anything will replace them beyond banks or drugstores.

I had seen Claymore on the shelf at my local entertainment store for a while, but I had avoided watching it until now, mostly because I feared it was going to fall into that whole “girl with sword” stereotype. Not that I have anything Against girls with swords; I am a Huge Motoko fanboy, so that should tell you where I stand on the matter. For me, it’s a question of sincerity.
There is a huge glut of shows out there that feature girls with big swords, girls with big guns, but really, these shows are more about girls with big — well, you can guess where I’m going with this. Not that Motoko isn’t sufficiently well endowed — dodges sword attack — but so many of these would-be “tough chick” heroines couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. They aren’t convincing. Having big boobies is Not a magical ability,...
