The "Matrix" franchise is still beloved despite it only having one movie we can all collectively agree is great, and that's largely because of the films' attention to detail. Even when things got confusing in the sequels, even when things didn't seem to be explained all that well on-screen, there was always a strong sense of consistency in the "Matrix" universe. We may not have understood everything about the way this dystopian world works, but it always felt clear that the creators understood it.

The Matrix Resurrections was one of our favorite films of 2021, an auteur franchise film thoroughly unafraid to plunge down the rabbit hole of Lana Wachowski’s imagination—simultaneously deconstructing The Matrix’s monumental impact, expanding the dense lore of its sequels, taking wry metafictional potshots at life, art, and capitalism in the 21st century, and telling a disarmingly personal story of an artist’s relationship to work, self, and reality. Not least among these idiosyncrasies is the handpicked writing team who assisted Lana in developing its script: two novelists better-known for their award-winning fiction than action-packed Hollywood fare.
Enter Aleksandar Hemon: Bosnian-born writer, frequent New Yorker contributor, Princeton professor of creative writing, and author of three novels––each noticeably devoid of airships, robots, and kung fu. Though this background would hardly suggest him for such a position, his decade-spanning friendship and collaboration with the Wachowskis led him to join...

eo and Trinity are reunited in this fourth instalment of the Matrix saga, set twenty years after the events of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions. Directed by Lana Wachowski, it has fun performances and the occasional good moment but is ultimately let down by a confusing script, chaotic direction and a general sense of pointlessness.
The film begins in intriguing fashion, introducing a new set of characters that includes Jessica Henwick (the best thing about Iron Fist) as Bugs, a blue-haired resistance fighter. After evading some gun-toting agents, she recruits a new Morpheus (Candyman‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and together they track down Neo (Keanu Reeves) and attempt to persuade him to rejoin the fight against the controllers of the Matrix.

Ever since it debuted in theaters in on HBO Max December 22, “The Matrix Resurrections” has been garnering praise from critics and fans alike for its meta take on the “Matrix” trilogy. But in a new interview with Collider, producer (and first assistant director on the first three films) James McTeigue reveals that one scene in particular was even more meta than audiences knew. Light spoilers below!
In “The Matrix Resurrections,” Neo (Keanu Reeves) believes himself to be a video game designer responsible for a popular trilogy series called Matrix. Then he hears this very inside baseball statement from his boss, Jonathan Groff’s Smith: “Things have changed, the market’s tough. I’m sure you can understand why our beloved parent company Warner Bros. has decided to make a sequel to the trilogy. They informed me they’re going to do it with or without us.”

For "The Matrix Resurrections," director Lana Wachowski shares scripting duties with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, the latter of whom authored the novel, "Cloud Atlas," which Wachowski also helped adapt into a film back in 2012. Wachowski began developing ideas for the fourth "Matrix" movie with the two writers in late 2018 after both of her parents died earlier that year.
In a forthcoming interview with /Film's Jack Giroux, Mitchell said there were two "foundational ideas" for "The Matrix Resurrections" that Wachowski initially presented him with. The first of those relates to the whole meta aspect of the movie whereby the original "Matrix" trilogy exists as a series of...

This article contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections
There’s no need for a blue pill. The Matrix Resurrections is, by and large, an engaging and energetic motion picture, and worthy of being on the same shelf as the groundbreaking original from 1999. Unlike the soul-crushingly dull previous entry, The Matrix Revolutions, it remembers that mind-scrambling pseudo-intellectual yammering gets tiresome on-screen if there isn’t also some fun. Luckily, director Lana Wachowski, working apart from her sister Lilly for the first time, and her screenwriting partners David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, have included plenty of flashbacks. A rewatch isn’t absolutely necessary. But talking about the new one after you see it is.

Easily one of my most anticipated films of 2021, Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections exceeded every possible expectation that this Matrix nerd had going into the sequel. Not only has The Matrix Resurrections firmly established itself as my favorite movie of the year, but I think that both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss are absolutely incredible and somehow this latest film retroactively makes The Matrix Revolutions even better. It’s hard to explain just why I love The Matrix Resurrections as much as I do, but the best comparison I can make it that this feels like Lana has crafted her own Matrix story by way of New Nightmare here, and considering just how much I adore Wes Craven’s meta sequel with every fiber of my being, then perhaps it should come as no surprise that Resurrections absolutely blew my mind and thrilled me from start to finish.

While some may feel that the films that made of the original “Matrix” trilogy offer an example of something near a perfect trilogy that should never be tampered with, there was arguably a significant drop after the first film in terms of entertainment value and narrative cohesiveness that is addressed and corrected in the newest addition to the series – The Matrix Resurrections.
Convinced that there may be more to his reality than he thinks there is, programmer Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) investigates whether the construct behind his bestselling series of games – “The Matrix Trilogy” – may not actually be a work of fiction. Of course, having been down this rabbit hole before, Mr. Anderson is wary of who to trust and what exactly he can believe is real and what is not. Of course, the audience knows precisely what Mr. Anderson does not and that makes the fog that the hero...

It’s fitting — maybe even fate — that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” should be the biggest and virtually only movie in the world on the week that “The Matrix Resurrections” is released. Both are mega-budget, meta sequels that feed on our collective familiarity with their respective franchises. One is a poison, the other its antidote.
One is a safe plastic monument to the solipsism of today’s studio cinema; an orgiastic celebration of how studio filmmaking has created a feedback loop so powerful that it’s programmed audiences to reject anything that threatens its perfection. The other is a jagged little red pill of a blockbuster that exhumes its intellectual property with such a pronounced sense of déjà vu that the comforts of its memory start to feel like the bars of a cage, and the perfect circle of its feedback loop blurs into a particle accelerator spinning faster and faster...

No two Matrix movies are alike. We remember the original as a revolutionary cyberpunk action film that introduced audiences to “bullet time” and the “wire fu” action sequences of the East. But The Matrix sequels weren’t just more of the same: The Matrix Reloaded is in many ways a superhero fantasy with the kind of CG spectacle we take for granted in the Marvel age. Meanwhile, The Matrix Revolutions could best be described as a manga and anime-inspired mecha horror movie, an absolutely twisted conclusion to the story that feels like the Wachowskis’ answer to the equally controversial The End of Evangelion.
Now, almost 20 years after the end of the original trilogy, how do we describe The Matrix Resurrections, a legacy sequel that’s at once a nostalgic look back at 1999 as well as a standalone continuation of Revolutions? Simply put: this is a love story, within an action movie,...

San Francisco went green on Saturday evening as Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections made its U.S. premiere at the city’s historic Castro Theater.
Naturally, Warner Bros. opted out of the standard red carpet for the event, in favor of a green one—with Mayor London Breed also getting in on the celebration of the film, which shot select scenes in San Francisco. “In honor of the Matrix Resurrection movie premiere tonight right here at our own Castro Theater, buildings across the city — including City Hall — will be participating in the Light San Francisco Matrix Green project!” she wrote on Twitter.
Set for release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22, The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth film in the iconic sci-fi franchise which comes 18 years after the release of the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and 22 years after its launch with The Matrix.

A new trailer for “The Matrix Resurrections” has landed, bringing with it more eye-popping action sequences and more questions about Lana Wachowski’s big return to the iconic action franchise. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back as franchise protagonists Neo and Trinity, but the characters no longer remember each other following the events of the original “Matrix” trilogy. Franchise newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Morpheus, but he’s not Lawrence Fishburne’s iteration of the character that fans love.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss aren’t the only talents reuniting with filmmaker Lana Wachowski in “The Matrix Resurrections.” The fourth installment in “The Matrix” film franchise is co-written by David Mitchell, author of “Cloud Atlas.” Wachowski worked with Mitchell on the 2012 film adaptation of that novel, and then they joined forces to write “The Matrix Resurrections” with “The Lazarus Project” author Aleksandar Hemon. Mitchell teased “Resurrections” in an interview with Greek newspaper To Vima (via Total Film magazine).
“I saw the film in Berlin in September. It’s really good,” Mitchell said. “I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a new poster for The Matrix Resurrections via its official Twitter account.
“Step back into the Matrix with this new poster for The Matrix Resurrections,” read the photo caption. “Watch it in theaters and on HBO Max* this Christmas. #TheMatrix.”
Resurrections is the fourth film in the iconic sci-fi franchise which comes 18 years after the release of the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and 22 years after its launch with The Matrix.
It’s set 20 years after the events of Revolutions, and finds Neo (Keanu Reeves) living a seemingly ordinary life as Thomas A. Anderson in San Francisco, where his therapist prescribes him blue pills. Neither he nor Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) recognize each other. Subsequently, however, Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Even after the trippy and action-packed trailer dropped our first look at this new era of The Matrix, the fourth installment in the cyberpunk film franchise remains an unsolvable puzzle box. We certainly tried to decode the trailer for answers in our breakdown and analysis, but there’s so much that remains a mystery. How are Neo and Trinity back from the dead? Is this supposed to be a new version of the Matrix? Was Zion just another simulation all along? Why is there a new, younger Morpheus?

One of the projects to finally get a full glimpse during the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon was “The Matrix Resurrections.” Of the many revelations out of the trailer is that the much-speculated-over title of the fourth “Matrix” installment is, indeed, “Resurrections.” Now the trailer has become available to view online. Back when most blockbuster movie franchises became standalone trilogies and not cinematic universes, The Matrix Revolutions seemed like a definitive end to Neo’s story. He’d struck a deal to save Zion from the Machines and deleted Hugo Weaving’s infinite Smiths once and for all. But what had it cost him? His sight, his life, and losing the woman he loved. It was a bittersweet end to The Wachowski’s magnum opus, but a conclusion nonetheless.

That talk immediately ceased, however, when it was announced that Lana Wachowski would be returning to direct her first solo film, and Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss would also be back along for the ride.
Even when pre-production was ramping up, the presence of Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II led many to believe that a young Morpheus was still set to be a part of the story, especially when Laurence Fishburne revealed the pretty straightforward reason as to why he wasn’t involved. There were even theories circulating online that The Matrix 4 could have a time travel element, but all of this speculation seems to have been...

The third “Bill & Ted” movie is here at last.
Released 31 years after “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and directed by Dean Parisot, “Bill & Ted Face the Music” sees the return of Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as Bill and Ted, now middle-aged former rock stars who are warned by a visitor from the future that they have just 78 minutes to create a song that will save the world — and the universe — from obliteration. With the aid of their families, they time travel to cobble together a band of history’s greatest musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong and Mozart, to help them fulfill their destiny.
“We never intended to make a third,” Winter says during a joint interview with Reeves on Wednesday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “We never felt the world particularly needed a third, but when we were pitched this idea...

Keanu Reeves has praised the safety protocols in place after Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix 4” resumed filming in Berlin.
“There’s some really thoughtful, effective protocols in place, and the rhythm of filmmaking has not been really impacted or interrupted, in the sense of filming,” Reeves told the Associated Press. “That’s because of the hard work and organization, and again the thoughtfulness that has gone into the protocols.”
“I think everyone loves the project,” Reeves added. “If you’re ever going to get into any kind of situation that needs to be figured out, or ‘how do we do this?’ show business people are the best. We’re just scrappy, we know how to get stuff done, we’re inventive, think on our feet, and that kind of kindred spirit of just coming together — goes back to like, you know, ‘let’s put on a show!’ ‘We’ll get some props,...

Laurence Fishburne will not take another trip down the rabbit hole. The actor told New York Magazine that he “has not been invited” to reprise his iconic role in Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix” sequel.
“I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great,” Fishburne told the publication.
Of his role as Morpheus in the original “The Matrix” trilogy, Fishburne said: “It is probably the role that I’ll be best remembered for, which is great; it’s not the only thing I’ll be remembered for, which is better. What I get with him is I’ve got Darth Vader in this hand, and I’ve got Obi-Wan in that hand. I’ve got Bruce Lee, I’ve got Muhammad Ali shuffled in there, and I’ve got kung fu.”

Warner Bros. is halting the 2021 release of the highly-anticipated fourth “The Matrix” film, pushing it to Spring 2022.
The move comes as Hollywood studios have been forced to shift their release schedules after theaters shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Matrix 4 is one of the most surprising sequel announcements this decade, given that the original trilogy wrapped up Neo’s story neatly way back in 2003, but this time next year, it will be a reality. Keanu Reeves will return to the role he made famous in 1999 and he recently opened up about what convinced him to revisit the series. And, no, it wasn’t a massive payday, despite what the cynics might claim.
Speaking to Empire, the John Wick actor revealed that the return of Lana Wachowski to the director’s chair and the “beautiful” screenplay she produced are what drew him to The Matrix 4.
“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me. That’s the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It’s been really special, and the story has, I think, some meaningful things to say,...

It’s been nearly two decades since Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss played Neo and Trinity in “The Matrix” trilogy, and not even the actors thought they’d ever be back as their legendary movie heroes in a fourth “Matrix” movie. “I never thought that it would happen,” Moss tells Empire magazine about “The Matrix 4” in a new interview. “It was never on my radar at all.”
Not only are Reeves and Moss back for “The Matrix 4,” but so is the franchise’s co-creator Lana Wachowski. “The Matrix 4” script was co-written by Wachowski, Aleksandar Hemon, and “Cloud Atlas” novelist David Mitchell. Wachowski is handling filmmaking duties solo after co-directing and co-writing the original trilogy with sister Lilly. The screenplay was strong enough to seal the deal for both Moss and Reeves to want to come back.

Warner Bros. appears hopeful that production on “Matrix 4” will restart by early July.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the cast of Lana Wachowski’s fourth installment of the sci-fi franchise has signed eight-week extensions to keep the actors on hold until at least July 6.
Filming began in February in San Francisco before moving to Berlin in mid-March. However, cameras never got rolling in Europe because production was halted in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Original “Matrix” stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are reprising their roles in the fourth film. Rounding out the cast are Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Brian J. Smith, Toby Onwumere and Jonathan Groff.
The film is currently scheduled for a 2021 release. Warner Bros. has not announced an exact date nor if it will be impacted by the postponed production.
Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell wrote the script with Wachowski, who will also produce with Grant Hill.

The Matrix 4 has temporarily shut down production due to the coronavirus pandemic that’s put much of the movie industry on hold in the past few weeks. The movie, a surprise sequel to the trilogy of cyberpunk action movies starring Keanu Reeves, was shooting in Berlin when Warner Bros. decided to postpone production.
According to Deadline, no one in the cast or crew has tested positive for the infection, so this is just a precautionary measure by the studio, which has also closed down production for The Batman, Fantastic Beasts 3, King Richard, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley movie. WB projects were shooting in the UK, Australia, and Los Angeles.
The Lana Wachowski-directed movie has already filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area and Mexico City, with videos of death-defying stunts and Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss riding down busy city streets on a motorcycle making the rounds on social media.

Warner Bros. has decided to shutter production on “The Matrix” as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.
The film had been in production since February, and moved from San Francisco to Berlin, where it was preparing to shoot this week.
In light of the coronavirus crisis and resulting travel restrictions enforced on Europe by President Donald Trump, execs thought it was the best move for the safety of all involved to delay the shoot indefinitely.
It is unknown at this time when the shoot is going to restart and if it will impact the 2021 release date.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their roles in the film, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Neil Patrick Harris join the cast.
Plot details are currently unknown. While it was rumored a young Morpheus could appear in the movie, sources have not confirmed that.
