The birthplace of such recent gems as Hannah Ha Ha, Retrograde, The Civil Dead, Yelling Fire In An Empty Theater, and Waiting for the Light to Change, the Slamdance Film Festival returns for its 29th edition, kicking off January 20 in Utah and January 23 online. One title that especially caught our eye is Love and Work, the latest from Pete Ohs, who last directed the SXSW hit Jethica. Starring Stephanie Hunt, Will Madden, Frank Mosley, Alexi Pappas, and John S. Davies, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the film’s first teaser ahead of a Slamdance debut on January 20.
Here’s a synopsis:
Diane arrives at the shoe factory looking for a job. She meets the boss, nails the interview and gets hired on the spot, immediately joining a small team of co-workers led by a helpful Texan named Fox.

"She just walked in with her new slam-piece." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie party comedy titled The Get Together, from Austin filmmaker Will Bakke. This premiered at last year's Austin Film Festival and Lone Star Film Festival, and arrives on VOD in May. The ensemble comedy is set at a wild Friday night house party, following group of twenty-somethings who face uncertain futures, of course. The main four characters are: a post-grad misfit, her slacker Uber passenger, his long lost love, and her neurotic boyfriend struggling to propose. Starring Alejandro Rose-Garcia, Johanna Braddy, Jacob Artist, Courtney Parchman, Stephanie Hunt, Bill Wise, and Chad Werner. This looks as ridiculous and as amusing as the concept promises, with plenty of teenagers-being-teens humor and annoying conversations. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Will Bakke's The Get Together, direct from Vertical's YouTube: A Friday night house party...

As one half of the eclectic (and eccentric) duo Nancy And Beth, opposite Megan Mullally, singer-actress Stephanie Hunt is comfortable creating under a pseudonym. It’s a trend she continues with her new solo project — Buffalo Hunt. She’ll release the debut album Play the Fool this summer and previews it this week with the song “Apple Tree.”
Hunt says the trippy track was loosely inspired by the cosmic country of Doug Sahm, the late Texas multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who, along with an influential solo career, fronted the Sir Douglas Quintet.

A protest song from Josh Ritter, the latest punk-vaudeville from Megan Mullally and Stephanie Hunt, and Valerie June’s mesmerizing Hendrix tribute make up this week’s list of must-hear country and Americana tracks.

Nancy and Beth, the quirky duo of Will & Grace star Megan Mullally and her musical partner Stephanie Hunt, will take their tough-to-describe, yet impossible-to-resist act on the road beginning next month. Bolstered by an eclectic, unpredictable songbook — ranging from classic country weepers such as George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” to Gucci Mane’s raunchy “I Don’t Love Her,” and the bluesy “Please Mr. Jailer” — the pair’s live shows, which they’ve described as “punk vaudeville,” are a celebratory event.

In a year where the treatment of women in entertainment has been a constant conversation, the 43rd annual Gracie Awards honored females across television, film, radio and news on Tuesday at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The star of the night, though, was actress, dancer and singer Rita Moreno, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event, presented by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation.
The Puerto Rican actress, who is currently starring in Netflix’s “One Day at a Time,” is a rare Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner and is best known for her work on “The King and I,” “West Side Story,” “Oz” and “The Electric Company.” After her 60-plus year career, Moreno told Variety that she thinks the recent women’s empowerment movement, “is not a gimmick, I think it’s going to expand more and more and it’s about damn time.”

Megan Mullally is known for her award-winning acting roles but the star insists singing is her first true love.
“People are always flabbergasted, like ‘You sing?’” Mullally tells People in this week’s issue. “Nobody knows I sing. Even though I’ve done Broadway musicals. I would only pick it over acting because it’s such a pure form of emotional expression.”

Why Watch? Let’s say you tell your friend that if you ever love a Michael Bay movie, he should just go ahead and kill you. Then, 10 years later, you rave about Bay’s latest (a heartfelt remake of My Fair Lady), and your pal shows up on your doorstep with a gun. He’d only be doing his duty, right? Even more complicated, in a world where time travel exists, what authority do you have to make decisions that will affect your future self? This excellent short film from director Bo Mirosseni and writer Elisha Yaffe (presented by Partizan Films) toys with the more mundane uses of the profoundly powerful tool, proving that it’ll be the personal things (and probably not assassination attempts on Hitler) that will do the most damage. Time Travel Lover is a hilarious — often dispiriting — exercise in having a plan laid out before you that you never asked to see. In...

Good morning! After last night's season finale, I'm sorry to say that this entire season of Game of Thrones was devoid of any lesbian content. I'm sorry if that was a spoiler, but I felt like you should know.
Did you catch Jane Lynch on The Tony Awards last night? She did her Miss Hannigan and, well, it was amazing.
The New York Times claims Lindsay Lohan is writing Samantha Ronson from rehab in hopes of getting her back. Consider the source.
Stephanie Hunt who played lesbian Devon on Friday Night Lights was part of the show's reunion at the Atx Television Festival this weekend.

Somebody Up There Likes Me
Directed by Bob Byington
Written by Bob Byington
USA, 2012
It may seem like a fool’s errand to ascribe deeper meaning to a 75-minute lark of a movie, but it’s not terribly difficult to spot a theme recurring throughout Somebody Up There Likes Me, specific to the very meaning of life. Of course, because this comedy (closer to an anti-comedy, really) is content staying in the lowest possible key throughout its brief running time, the analysis of what it is to be an adult in the modern world isn’t too incisive. Still, Somebody Up There Likes Me is consistently entertaining enough to get by.
Keith Poulson plays Max, an aimless young waiter in Los Angeles who’s given a mysterious briefcase one day, which he’s instructed not to open. So, of course, he opens it as soon as he has a chance.

Max (Keith Poulson) dons a bouquet of flowers as he stumbles in on his ex-wife (Kate Lyn Sheil) having sex with another man. Any hopes that the hapless Max may have of reconciling with his ex are instantly extinguished, so Max returns to his mundane existence as a waiter, made worthwhile only by the the brazen wit of his seasoned co-worker, Sal (Nick Offerman). Whether out of boredom or laziness, Max likes to love the one he's with, so he commences a relationship with a breadstick-fixated co-worker, Lyla (Jess Weixler). Next thing we know, Lyla and Max are married; then, a mere few frames later they already have a young child. The presence of a child then justifies the hiring of a smokin' hot young nanny (Stephanie Hunt). With Max being the easily distracted fella that he is, we can see the writing on the wall. Destined to not be happily wed for very long,...

Are you interested in the finer points of How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)?
ABC’s newest comedy, which debuted Wednesday at 9:30/8:30c, stars Scrubs alum Sarah Chalke as Polly, a neurotic, newly single mother who rounds up daughter Natalie (Rachel Eggleston) and decamps to her childhood home in the wake of her divorce.
“I’m not a failure; I’m trendy,” she tells us via voiceover six months after begging her no-filter mother Elaine (played by Weeds‘ Elizabeth Perkins) and laid-back stepfather Max (Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Brad Garrett) to take her in.

Sarah Chalke makes her regular return to TV with "How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)" this week.
The "Scrubs" alumna completes her TV career 180 with the ABC comedy: Chalke, who played eldest Connor child Becky on "Roseanne," is now playing a TV mom.
"How To Live With Your Parents" follows Chalke's Polly, who's just recently divorced her irresponsible husband Julian (Jon Dore). Due to financial struggles, she and her five-year-old daughter Natalie (Rachel Eggleston) move in with her vulgar mom Elaine (Elizabeth Perkins) and uber-chill stepfather Max (Brad Garrett). But the uptight young mother's parenting ideals clash with Elaine and Max's improvisational and eccentric lifestyle. (As you've probably seen in previews, there is underwear in lunchboxes and coffee at bedtime when Natalie is under Elaine and Max's rule -- or lack thereof.)

Chicago – How do so many talented comedians end up making such an awful sitcom as ABC’s “How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)”? The show is proof that the writer is still the king of television and that even a cast this notable can’t save cliched, poorly-written comedy.
Television Rating: 1.5/5.0
“How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” almost plays like a spoof of a comedy within a smarter show. It’s that cliched. And there should be a law against the number of jokes about a missing testicle as there are in the premiere. With echoes of “Meet the Fockers” and a long-gone era of situation comedy, “How to Live with Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” just isn’t funny. For the last couple of years, ABC has been playing with the “throw anything at the wall and see if something sticks” theory of sitcoms. This has led to a lot of strange shows and a lot of very niche markets. While ABC has some great comedies, this approach has led to a lot of quick cancels, and some tricky situations. The Neighbors leaps to mind, as does the difficulty the network is having with Happy Endings (a hilarious show, which isn’t getting sold appropriately, and is somewhat niche itself).
Now we have a new show that’s really focused on the awkward and uncomfortable theory of comedy, and it’s one that is pretty hard to predict.

Title: Somebody Up There Likes Me Director: Bob Byington Starring: Keith Poulson, Nick Offerman, Jess Weixler, Kevin Corrigan, Kate Lyn Sheil, Stephanie Hunt, Marshall Bell, Jonathan Togo, Megan Mullally A delightfully deadpan relationship comedy that plays like a cross between something from Quentin Dupieux and Jared and Jerusha Hess, “Somebody Up There Likes Me” is an imaginative paean to world-weary nonchalance. Directed by Bob Byington, this subversive little treat flirts with absurdism but never tips over into hipster posturing in chronicling a bunch of domestic ennui and professional unhappiness that its characters pretty much seem to all shruggingly accept. After listless waiter Max Youngman (Keith Poulson, looking like a cousin [ Read More ]

Chicago – At the start, I’ll admit to kind of hating Bob Byington’s truly unusual “Somebody Up There Likes Me,” playing this weekend at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago with local actor and “Parks and Recreation” scene-stealer Nick Offerman in attendance. It’s such a mannered, unique piece that it verges on grating. However, it slowly worked on me with its quirky sensibility to the point that some of it worked. The film never quite comes together enough to get over the sense that it’s a comedy made by people who think they’re too cool to laugh but it comes close.

The abrasive Max (Keith Poulson) works at a steakhouse with Sal (Offerman) and approaches the world with the kind of deep, hipster detachment that would make Wes Anderson call him pretentious. He kind of bobs and weaves through life, barely registering any sort of...

Yeah, you can simply go ahead and stop trolling BuzzFeed like you've been doing for the past 16 hours. Megan Mullally, best known for her role as Karen Walker on NBC classic Will & Grace is one half of performing duo Nancy & Beth, and when she and her cohort Stephanie Hunt decided to put a new spin on an old viral classic at The Largo in Los Angeles, well, a new viral baby was made, and I'd argue that it's literally the best thing ever of the day. Megan invites her real-life husband, Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman, to reinvent Risky's "Smell Yo Dick" and the result could not be more awesome. N-words and all, the three give the track the ultimate cover. Megan Mullally unzips and sniffs when you press play:
You don't have to bother attempting communication with me, this is what I'll be playing nonstop for the rest of the day.

We love it when one of our favorite comedy couples, Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally, get together to be funny, but seeing them rap together is an even bigger treat.
Offerman accompanied his wife and her music partner/fellow actress Stephanie Hunt (A.K.A. Nancy & Beth) as they covered Riskay's hit single "Smell Yo D*ck" live at the Largo in Los Angeles, CA recently, and the video is nothing short of great entertainment.
Watch above (some Nsfw language, but you probably guessed that) and tell us your favorite Offerman/Mullally moment in the comments.

Before becoming the iconic, gruff Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, Nick Offerman was in plenty of offbeat indie comedies like Wristcutters: A Love Story and Harmony and Me. Offerman is back working with Harmony writer-director Bob Byington on Somebody Up There Likes Me. The film co-stars Megan Mullally, Kevin Corrigan, Keith Poulson, Jess Weixler, and Friday Night Lights' Stephanie Hunt. It's perfect if you've ever been like, "I wish Ron Swanson were more twee and wore wire-frame glasses."...

Ron Swanson's got nothing on Nick Offerman's newest dry-tongued sour puss, Sal.
In this trailer for Bob Byington's SXSW-selected "Somebody Up There Likes Me," the "Parks and Recreation" star trades in his uber-conservative mustached wit monster for a middle-aged barkeep with a dismal sense of self and a sick salt and pepper goatee.
Offerman co-leads the indie comedy alongside Keith Poulson as an existential food and beverage-slinger whose protege is clueless in matters of the heart. "The last five years I wake up and it's like something fast-forwarded beyond my control," he pouts.
As Poulson's Max enters a second unwise marriage, though, it's Sal whose got a front row seat to witness the carnage and offer up glib anecdotes like "You know how you're old? When you sneeze and lose a tooth." Heh, good one.

"You know how you know when you're old?" Tribeca Films has debuted a trailer for an indie comedy called Somebody Up There Likes Me, written and directed by Bob Byington. I haven't heard of this film before, but it stars a few charming actors, including funnyman Nick Offerman in a fatherly role, as well as the lovely Jess Weixler (seen in Teeth, Alexander the Last, The Normals). This looks like a rather charming, funny, quirky indie romantic comedy of sorts, filled with all kinds of pretty faces. Keith Poulson is the young male lead, joined by Stephanie Hunt, Kate Lyn Sheil & Jonathan Togo. Take a look, have fun! Here's the official trailer for Bob Byington's Somebody Up There Likes Me, in high def from Apple: Nick Offerman (seen on "Parks & Rec", 21 Jump Street) stars in this smart, subversive comedy about a man, his best friend (Keith Poulson), and the...

The AFI Film Fest (11.01-11.08) have announced the line-ups for our favorite sections at the fest in the Young American selections and New Auteurs section and they’ve managed to stack up on titles that are amongst the year’s best and which in the case of two films were mysteriously passed over by the likes of Telluride, Tiff and Nyff. Michel Franco’s After Lucia (see pic above) and Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer will be making the Los Angeles premieres accompanied by the best title to come out of the Main Comp at this year’s Cannes edition in Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog. This trio will be joined by a trio of gems that recently premiered at Tiff in: Maja Miloš’ Clip, Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die and Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking. Ron Swanson is getting some lovin' during Season 5 of "Parks & Recreation" and Nick Offerman is excited about his new love interest. Just who can romance Ron and not be named Tammy? None other than Xena herself, Lucy Lawless.
"It's so funny," Offerman told The Huffington Post during a phone interview. "When we came down to figuring out who it was going to be, we realized that the world of popular culture had been creating the perfect candidate for many years: the female champion of the universe."
Lawless is joining the cast as a single mom who catches Ron's eye, but that's not the only change for the new season. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) is now part of the Pawnee City Council, leaving Ron to pick up her slack in the parks department. It's safe to say there's a new dynamic this year. Somebody Up There Likes Me
Director & Screenwriter: Bob Byington
Thirty-five years in the life of Max, his best friend Sal, and a woman they both adore. A deadpan fable about time sneaking up on and swerving right around us.
Cast: Keith Poulson, Nick Offerman, Jess Weixler, Stephanie Hunt, Kevin Corrigan
(North American Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For?: If you like quirky humor but hesitate when said quirk becomes overly cute, this is the perfect refresh for you. Fans of Nick Offerman should give this one a whirl to see what kind of comedic magic he can pull within a feature-length film. If you simply like funny movies in general, keep this one on your radar.
Overall
In a way that feels similar to a first experience with The Royal Tenenbaums, Bob Byington’s hilarious gem...

- The Scorecard Review
Bob Byington’s "Somebody Up There Likes Me" is about a guy who doesn’t grow up. In fact, he doesn’t even age over the film’s span of about three decades in his life. It may have something to do with a mysterious briefcase, the origins of which are only ever suggested by animated cloud interludes and the ethereal implications of the title itself. But that hardly matters, so long as Max (Keith Poulson) keeps bumbling through marriage, money and mortality.
Max is, at first, a disgruntled waiter at a generic steakhouse alongside best friend/only friend Sal (Nick Offerman). Over time, each man will have affections for new girl Lyla (Jess Weixler), but the freshly divorced Max gets there first – in fact, he impulsively proposes to the mealy-mouthed breadstick-muncher not long after they meet and she nonchalantly accepts.
Writer-director Byington then takes one of several five-year leaps forward into the narrative.

Picking 10 titles from a selection of 132 feature films is a bit of an exercise in absurdity, but for those of you looking to add a few more flicks to your ever-expanding list of “must sees” before you head down to the convention center, here are ten titles I personally am excited to see.
In alphabetical order:
Citadel
First up is Citadel, described by Irish director Ciarán Foy as “a psychological horror about an agoraphobic young father who teams up with a vigilante priest in order to save his daughter from a gang of twisted feral children.” I wasn’t able to find much else on Citadel but the stills are compelling enough and I’ve had a soft spot for any movie involving a vigilante priest since Peter Jackson’s Braindead. Also, keep an ear out for the film’s score, which is composed by the experimental duo tomandandy who...

With Sundance 2012 Film Festival over, the next big one on the horizon is South by Southwest, which we’ll be heavily covering. The biggest chunk of the line-up has been announced today, which has some great premieres including 21 Jump Street, Tiff and Sundance hit The Raid, Will Ferrell‘s Casa de mi Padre, the documentary Girl Model (which we liked at Tiff), as well as the next from Broken Lizard, The Babymakers. Before he could get spiritual with Karen on "Home Sweet Home," Hank had to deal with the cynical doctor who took care of him. The miffed MD, tired of seeing celebrities over-serve themselves, lectured Hank about the myths of living fast and dying young and beautiful. I loved how he checked out Karen’s ass, too, when she entered the hospital room to visit Hank. A very small but realistic detail.
Then, there was Hank’s hospital roommate, Marv, and his saggy old posterior. I could have lived without that little bit of reality.
Hank must have felt like he got a second lease on life with how nice Karen was being to him. Of course, we learned it was largely in part because she thought he was so miserable that it forced him to try and kill himself.
