Review of Mi general

Mi general (1987)
10/10
Intelligent parody of the armed forces in contemporary Spain.
23 September 1998
This film is a brilliant comedy that takes as its target one of the major institutions of Spanish society and politics: the armed forces. A group of aging generals report for a "cursillo" (seminar) on the demands of contemporary warfare--conducted by much younger officers--and find themselves somewhat in over their heads. The decorum and protocol of military life slowly break down as the general begin to act like junior high kids.

The humor is sometimes slapstick but always intelligent. The only problem I see is that some non-Spanish viewers will not catch all the jokes, but overall it deals with universal ideas and should offer pleasant viewing to all.
