promising start of a young director
15 April 2004
This short film impresses with a nice build-up to an unexpected end. Duken seems perfectly comfortable shouldering the burden of acting (he is an experienced actor) and being a first-time director. He can also claim credit as writer, together with Bernd Katzmarczyk, his co-director. Duken and Katzmarczyk follow traditional cinematography but add their own little touch, using veteran French actor Dominique Pinon (Delicatessen) in one of the leading roles. This freshness of approach to what at first seems a clichee story makes one hope Ken Duken and his team will deliver more of this type of work. A team including Sami Hammi, whose score captures the mood of individual scenes sensitively (listen to the closing tune) and also makes one hope to hear more of his work.
