Yuva (2004)
7/10
Mani's yuva packs a punch.

If there was any doubt about India's best director of the contemporary directors then the film Yuva should end it. It is a radical film primarily from Indian film perspective which breaks all stereotypes and set new grounds for others to follow. Right from the story, the dialogue, the background score, cinematography, character's performance all blend together to make this film a spectacle which not only spellbound but mesmerizes you. It's a kind of film which will please not only an average cinemagoer but also critics as it conforms to both cine-logic and audience taste. The audience's taste seems to have met it's match with this film, and could be seen as a caveat to all those who are hell-bent on churning out only formula films. The old formula seem to have become obsolete and indications are for something new which is not trite but something novel. Other thing that needs mentioning is the performance of the actors, even average actors have raised their level of acting a notch higher and the credit should go to Mani Ratnam. The fact that no actor scores over other and remain within the boundary of the character they portray is an achievement in itself, particularly in bollywood where character is written keeping in mind the actor. If there is one word that sums up the movie in a nutshell, brilliant. Kudos to Mani Ratnam and one hopes that from now on he makes more movies in Hindi so that a larger chunk of India's population is not devoid of his art.
