Review of Flaming Star

Flaming Star (1960)
6/10
OK western despite Elvis
9 January 2005
Given that Elvis Presley was never going to win any acting awards, he does pretty well in this Don Siegel-directed western, as half-breed Pacer Burton.

The main theme of the story is the classic whites against Native Indians - only in this case Elvis's pa is white (John McIntire) and his ma is Indian (the lovely Dolores del Rio) and that causes problems with the redneck locals. He also has a white brother from pa's first marriage, Clint (played by Steve Forrest, about the best actor in this film).

There's a fair bit of violence, there's Barbara Eden as Elvis's love interest, and of course there's the obligatory Presley song or two. But 'Flaming Star' isn't certainly one of the worst films he ever made, the colour is good, and there's a touching ending off into the horizon.
