Although this is a short movie and an obvious mile-stone of the art form this film also has a plot which is also often overlooked. Be warned however that spoilers follow.
Namely if you view the film carefully you will see that the man to the far right is holding an object in his hand and steps behind the woman. I believe he might be stabbing her! The young man walking across the frame is doubtless alarmed by this and at the last moment turns towards the the man and woman to stop him from further injuring her. The initially standing in the center of the frame is alarmed, probably by the scream of the woman being stabbed by the man.
So not only do we the first film ever made, but we also have the first murder-mystery ever filmed!
