Review of Just Friends

Just Friends (I) (2005)
A totally goofball comedy, and I loved it!!

Warning: Spoilers
We needed a movie for the teens but I didn't really think I would like it. Gladly, I was mistaken. Make no mistake about it, this is a goofball comedy, and some viewers will hate it. But for those of us who can enjoy slapstick with unpredictable results, this is one funny movie. It was inspired by the makers of the movie, having each experienced the "I like you like a friend" comment from a girl they really wanted to be dating.

Ryan Reynolds plays Chris Brander and, as the movie begins in 1995, they are finishing up high school. Chris is on the chubby side (great makeup to give Ryan a fat face and bushy hair) but has a best friend in Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart). Chris wants more but is so humiliated that he leaves town, moves out west, and becomes slender and successful.

The main of the movie takes place 10 years later, 2005, in New Jersey in the cold winter. Chris is asked to escort ditzy Samantha James (Anna Faris), wanna be singer, in what seems to be a Britney Spears parody, to Paris, but a problem in the flight grounds them in NJ. So, he returns to town and finds Samantha still there. Determined to play it 'cool' to have Samantha come begging to him, his plan backfires.

Chris Klein shows some acting chops as Dusty, who grows up to be a singer and composer, and who also wants to get Samantha, mainly for revenge at her not giving him attention when they were younger.

Some of my favorite scenes were between the brothers, Chris Marquette (of Joan of Arcadia) playing Chris' brother Mike, who still fought but in a good-natured way. The slapping exchanges were particularly funny.
