Weary George Axelrod comedy
20 May 2006
Jack Lemmon has some bright moments (seconds, actually) playing confirmed bachelor in New York City who wakes up from a drunken night of partying to find he's a married man; Virna Lisi is his Italian sex-bomb spouse who makes a living jumping out of cakes. Weary comedy from (hit-or-miss) writer George Axelrod and directed by (mostly-miss) filmmaker Richard Quine. It benefits slightly from some good players, but the second-half in the courtroom is deadly. Not the leering, girl-ogling opus it was made to appear, but not much of a character-comedy either. Terry-Thomas is amiable as Lemmon's butler, Eddie Mayehoff is in fine form as Jack's buddy, but little else works in this sour, frantic nonsense. *1/2 from ****
