Taxi (I) (1998)
7/10
Original and Besson

"Taxi" won't be to everyone's taste. My DVD copy has options for subtitles in various European languages but if you want it dubbed you have a choice of French or French.

Oh well, they may be one of the rudest and most insular races this side of North Korea, but you can't fault the French when it comes to STYLE. France has produced some fine, even classic, movies, a fact born out by the number of domestic French films that have been remade into standard Hollywood fare and sold all around the world.

Not only are there 2 French "Taxi" sequels (with a third on the way) but the original film has been remade in the USA as well. There's not doubt that the premise of this Marseilles-set movie has a turbocharger under the hood.

Writer/Producer Luc Besson's script is a fine blend of romance, comedy and action and veteran director Gerard Pires (aided by Jean-Pierre Sauvaire's clever camera-work) coaxes fine performances from the talented cast.

Even if your understanding of French is limited to "Oui" and "Non", if you like cars and knockabout comedy then you should give "Taxi" a go.
