Of course, this concert comes nowhere near the original. In fact, nothing comes close to the original. But, if you ever saw the Concert at an early age (an age where flying monkeys give you the creeps), you keep it pretty close to your heart. If you saw it only recently, I understand why you dislike it.
I think the crew of the "play" was sure that everyone had seen the original before the concert. But the trouble was that everyone had the original so stuck in their minds, they were expecting almost the same thing. But it wouldn't have been close to possible.
I think that if the orchestra wasn't so much on the stage, there would've been enough room to do a real play with the skipping and the dancing. Everything looked extremely crowded and the dancing looked crunched.
But the comedy is to die for. Debra Winger and of course Nathan Lane added a bit of pep to it. I thought they just lifted the play when it was dragging. And if you ever listen to the audience, you can clearly hear that the most comic stars were their favorites.
The music is something I spend hours looking for on iTunes. Not so much Jewel's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but things more like "If I Only Had a Brain" and "If I Only Had a Heart". Both of the songs are remixed but don't sound opposite of the original's songs. The "munchkins" did an immensely terrific job. And I liked them better than the original ones because without their squeaky voices, you can actually understand what they're singing.
Overall, this concert was not anything like the original because like the director said. He wanted it to be a more modern. But what many people might not know was that this concert was for charity. I think they said something like we're raising money for kids to get a new start emotionally, physically, and give them a start for school. Of course, I'm not too sure because someone is shouting in the background while the person's talking. This concert was not supposed to be like the original but to just relive a wonderful story.
