Review of The Dark

The Dark (2005)
8/10
Quite good in fact
15 June 2007
The first time I saw The Dark, I thought it was a very bad film, boring, confused with horribly bad acting (e.g. Bean). I gave it a second chance yesterday and watched it again. This time I felt totally different than the first. This movie has an "ambience". It plays on many levels of feelings (horror, guilt, sadness, cruelty) and is quite complicated, that's true, but nevertheless rather coherent. The ending is perfect from this point of view. If you didn't get it, watch it a second time. OK, it has got that famous "carrie's ending" syndrome, but, well, it's pretty scary anyway. And I don't think that all Welsh are stupid. I would really like to visit Wales, now. Hoping just that Annwyn does not really exist. ;-) The Dark may be a flawed movie, but it is NOT a copy of modern Japanese horror cinema and it could well become a modest cult film in years to come.
