Cheesy HG Lewis fun with a catchy song and lots of the red stuff to boot
24 October 2007
The infamous "Two Thousand Maniacs!" still has the ability to shock viewers some 40 odd years after it first appeared on the silver screen. Quite what it would have been like to view this back in '64 is anybody's guess!

Despite its high cheese content, the film's subject matter remains chilling. What's more frightening than one maniac? Quite simply, two thousand of the blood crazed psychopaths! In Herschell Gordon Lewis' film, we see innocent travellers killed in a variety of unpleasant ways, all of which brings much glee to the totally bonkers population of Pleasant Valley. Lewis doesn't spare any of the red stuff as the cast are dispatched in a number of grisly ways, including a bizarre barrel ride for one unlucky gentleman and amputations for one of the girls.

The delectable Connie Mason plays Terry Adams and the late William Kerwin plays the male lead, Tom White. The town's population are convincingly deranged, especially Jeffrey Allen as the mayor and rednecks Ben Moore and Gary Bakeman as Lester and Rufus.

6 out of 10. Worth a viewing but not HG's best movie. They don't make 'em like this anymore! It must be said, the soundtrack is a corker!
