Joy of Living (1938)

Warning: Spoilers
Watching this film is like finding an old family photo album with a lot of boring pictures in it but suddenly discovering a recording among the same old pictures that is a catchy tune you'll keep with you always. The Jerome Kern score, including "You Couldn't Be Cuter", is what saves the film. And it is good enough to make the movie worth watching. By the way, "You Couldn't Be Cuter" introduced here by Irene Dunne, is available online sung by Ella Fitzgerald. Great stuff, but I really miss the days of free music files online!

Irene's performances are so good I think they could give Jeannette MacDonald a run for her money.

The picture also isn't helped by Fairbanks as the male lead. It would have been a much different and improved picture with Cary Grant in the role.

Slow and even embarrassing (dubbed Donald Duck voices) at times, watch it anyway for some catchy tunes and an earful of Irene Dunne singing them.
