Review of Anjaam

Anjaam (1994)
8/10
Very strong woman story
11 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Having watched 30-something Indian movies, I may still rank as a beginner, but let me say what I've felt anyway.

Besides the standard fare of song & dance numbers, and comic relief by the transvestite/eunuch threesome, I thought this could be called mostly the Passion of Shivani, and ultimately her elaborate revenge. There were no positive male roles, and SRK came over as one of the most mean men ever. Add the corrupt police officer, the sadist (female) prison warden, the brother-in-law who is served very poetic justice, choking to death on his own money...

...and a cliff-hanger that comes out unexpected, but makes an ultimately convincing END. Heavy drama, with political indication (police, "justice", politicians all get their accusations), and ultimately a very strong experience for this beginner. Of course, reality is something else, but all I wanted was a good show. And I got a very good one.
