Bad Bio-Pics: The Babe Ruth Story
2 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
The Babe Ruth Story (1948) is a cheesy, over-the-top, white washed bio-pic about the greatest baseball player of all time George Herman Ruth. I have seen some weird and laughable biographies bit this one has to be seen to be believed. The "Babe" is portrayed as a lovable lug who likes to drink milk, heal the sick, lover of animals and just likes to have a great time all around. The film follows Babe throughout his life, his called home run shots, the love of his life and his final days as he's wheeled into an operating room. Several scenes stands out, a crippled kid being tossed a ball by the Babe who after he gets the ball beginning to walk, a dog being hit with a ball being rushed to a hospital, a terminally ill child healing through the magic of the home run and Babe Ruth walking into a bar an ordering a glass of milk.

The film tries to be sentimental like Pride of the Yankees, but what worked for that film fails on all levels in this one. Everything seems so sappy and sweet that it turns the movie into a farcical comedy. That alone makes this movie a must watch. I wish this movie was available to watch on DVD.
