Review of Tsotsi

Tsotsi (2005)

A real eye-opener for young minds!

Warning: Spoilers
I chose Tsotsi from a list set by WJEC Exam board to teach my GCSE Film Studies group. It was a gamble with easier choices like Spirited Away and Bend it Like Beckham to choose from. Their responses have been worth it though.

The engagement with the characters and their experiences, so far removed from the comfort of their classrooms has amazed me. It just confirms that film can engage and focus pupils in ways textbooks can't; showing them other sides of the world and giving them opportunity to explore situations they will hopefully never find themselves in.

The alternative endings have provided some interesting debate and the other DVD extras have given us some great background to work with.

The characters offer a range of ways in to the situation; looking at life from Tsotsi's, Miriam's and Boston's perspective. The contrast of settings and the beautiful establishing shots of South Africa create a moving atmosphere of a world so far removed from this.

The film uses the physical movement of the actors to great effect, with limited dialogue and a powerful soundtrack (one the pupils have found particularly appealing!!).

I hope you enjoy their comments on a film that they will clearly remember for some time to come (Well I hope until at least after their exam!)
