6/10
The title of the film is by no means a misnomer, this is a rather gory movie.

I have sort of mixed feelings about this film after watching it. Probably because at times this movie is rather entertaining and good, but then at other times the movie just is not all that good. The gore effects also range from good to bad as does the story. Overall, I would say it is an okay film that just tries to do to much and fit a lot of scenes in the movie making it at times seem very disjointed and not as appealing to watch. The story is about some sort of future vision of Tokyo, a land not to much different from what it is today, except for in this land the police are a private organization that dress suspiciously like storm troopers and there seems to be some strange obsession with self mutilation in this new Tokyo. There is also a strange new breed of criminal appearing on the streets called an 'engineer'. What separates these 'engineers' with the everyday criminal you ask? Well they have the uncanny ability to survive being shot or sliced and diced. Not only that, any wounds they sustain somehow generates a weapon on the place that was injured. Well there is a female cop who is the top hunter of these criminals as the only way to take them out is to destroy this strange key like growth that appears in the bodies of these people. Interesting enough concept as the plot had some nice touches, though I saw where the movie was going long before the startling revelations were made near the end. Along with the good things about the plot were some bad things such as an unexplained character that had a showdown with a schoolgirl 'engineer' near the end of the movie and very little explanation of the bartender that seemed to have a back story that may have been a bit interesting, but was reduced to simply revenge fuel for our heroine near the end of the movie. There was also an annoying, but also cute blond dispatcher that needed some comeuppance and never got it. There were also head scratching scenes like the strange freak strip show with the strange scene involving a headless and armless creature that does something to the crowd you really have to see to believe. Like I said, I think they just had way to many strange ideas bouncing around in their heads when making this film and they tried to squeeze them all into the film whether they may have needed more fleshing out or not. The film also has a "Robocop" and "Starship Trooper" feel to it as well with random commercials that sometimes killed the momentum of the movie. So in the end worth a watch, however, some scenes you will simply stare at in stunned disbelief. Though I have to say the scene with the subway molester made me chuckle, I just knew messing with her was going to be a very big mistake.
