A little too simplistic
20 July 2010
I really wanted to like "Last Chance Harvey", but I only kind-of liked it. It is great to see Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson as romantic comedy leads, or rather romantic drama leads.

It is a good movie, no matter how predictable it is, but it failed because of how it was trying to succeed. The producers know this is a good movie, with popular actors, nothing really to turn its audience away from them. So to make it as accessible as possible, they talked down to the audience as much as possible. They had many scenes introducing us to Harvey (Hoffman) and Kate (Thompson), but I only needed one scene. It was written well enough that the additional scenes didn't give me any new aspects of their characters, that they were just pointless. Every advancement in the story was made painstakingly obvious.

"Last Chance Harvey" isn't all bad, and if you like romantic dramas, then it's quite good. There is some comedy to keep the film light, but the many pointless scenes - only there to make sure every person in the audience doesn't get lost in the very simple story - really drags the film and can make it seem boring. I didn't like it as much as I love Dustin Hoffman.
