Splitting Headache
28 September 2010
This dramatization of the killing spree in Boston in the early 1960s is told in a documentary style, which serves to underscore the stark brutality of the crimes. However, the movie moves in fits and starts, instead of having a sustained narrative flow, making it difficult to become involved in the story. Curtis is OK, but the film does not offer a revealing glimpse into the killer's psyche. Fonda is fine as the lead investigator. The flashy presentation is distracting. Use of the split screen was popular in the 1960s, and here it's done to death, serving no purpose other than making the images smaller and harder to see and give the viewer a splitting headache.
