Review of Honolulu

Honolulu (1939)

A blast from the past
19 January 2011
Having just seen this Movie on TCM after about 50 years, I have to say that MGM certainly got their "pound of flesh" from their stars, e.g Robert Young in a dual role, and made in a year when he appeared in numerous movies for them. He walks through a role that he could play in his sleep as he had done it so many times. Eleanor Powell, while no beauty, dances very well although her "Bill Robinson" number, while not offensive, was very basic, and the last Hawaiian number was so repetitive it became an ordeal to watch. Seeing Gracie Allen (as a dizzy dame) took me back, while hubby George Burns played a very secondary role quite well. The Chinese servant proved to be the funniest of all, while the lovely Rita Johnson made it more watchable. I do think just about every Hollywood Studio has used this plot over and over.
