Clear Everything!
11 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
It was probably an entertaining play when released early in the Depression. The wind from the east was red and aggressive Lee Tracey goes to Russia to sniff out its source. Unfortunately it comes across now as rather dull. A lot of things go on -- there's a great deal of energy on the loose -- but little of it is especially interesting.

Russia seems in bad shape. There's a nosy OGPU commissar sticking his nose into everything. Doors fall off their hinges when they're slammed, or even when they're merely closed.

Desperate for news, Tracy and his pal, James Gleason, try to set up a phony assassination attempt involving the commissar but things go awry and Tracy himself is winged by accident. There are plenty of opportunities for jokes but the wisecracks are bland, and the several women hanging around the big shabby hotel room have nothing much to do.

I'm sure others will enjoy it more. Tracey gives one of those fast, 1930s performances that waste no time. It's too bad the time wasn't otherwise put to better use.
