Who is the real evil?

Warning: Spoilers
I particularly appreciate this crime flick from France. I love it because, at first sight, you seem to have the usual scheme of the cop tracking the serial killer down. But beware, things are not so simple. Not at all. The way the characters are presented is very interesting. From the start, you understand that Jean-Louis Trintignant - the cop - is a little weird, waco cop, shooting suspects just like that...And when the criminal - Richard Berry - is shown, the audience rapidly may feel some empathy for him. OK, he is a maniac, but some sequences may explain some things about him, although nothing is explained about his past life. He is just a loner, a lonely man suffering of loneliness. And the scene where he invites the little musician girl is very touching. You can't hate a character like that. His nemesis Trintignant is far worse than him, although he is a cop.

Yes, I persist and sign, I really like this movie, unfortunately forgotten.
