eye opening insight into developmental influences
30 December 2014
I decided to re-watch this performance in light of the recent accusations against Mr. Bill. I grew up on the first three Cosby albums, I-Spy, and Uptown Saturday Night. My impression of this work was just how masterfully intelligent Bill is. His comedy style is so unique that no one has been able to mimic it. We all must seem like children to him, putty in his hands that he can con and manipulate with ease. The part that seemed to give better understanding to the possibility that he may have developed deviant tendencies was when he was discussing what his parents were like. The thing that made we watch this was remembering how he described how his father would threaten to kill him, in a cold, detached voice, saying; "I brought you into this world so I can take you out." I have a background in psychology and understand how the environment created by one's relationship with their parents shapes the personality. The abusive maternal relationship combined with the cold emotionless paternal relationship goes a long way towards explaining how someone could develop a fetish for having sex with unconscious partners. He told stories about how his mother would savagely beat him on a regular basis. That pattern continued with the wife he chose for his own children. When this first came out, most white people such as myself followed political correctness to excuse this behavior as "cultural traditions." Most of us throughout society have grown and evolved to where we can now recognize that parents who sow violence will reap continued violence throughout society.
