Beach action with Mabel
5 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"The Water Nymph" is a black-and-white film from over 100 years ago, runs for 7 minutes and is of course a silent movie. Do not be fooled by versions that exists with soundtracks. It stars Mabel Normand at the age of 19 or 20 together with Walk of Famers Mack Sennett (Oscar winner and also the director here) and Ford Sterling. But the star is Mabel despite her young age. I am fairly certain, she elevated the material in almost every film she was in, but sadly, the material was sometimes so mediocre, unrealistic and unfunny (shame for a comedy!) that even Mabel Normand with her wonderful charisma cannot make it work. This is one of these films and I am glad that it is so short. Really not a good watch unfortunately. Even the intertitles were pretty strange. Normand may have been the closest to Chaplin, Keaton, Arbuckle and Lloyd from the female sex, but today really only film enthusiasts know her. What a shame. She has great talent. Too bad the material in "The Water Nymph" isn't good enough to let her show it. Not recommended.
